Governor Pence Statement on Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals’ Ruling on President’s Executive Action on Immigration

0

Governor Mike Pence issued the following statement in response to the decision of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the injunction against President Obama’s executive action on immigration.

“We welcome the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling that the president cannot unilaterally change the law.  This lawsuit has never been about immigration.  It is about denying states such as ours the opportunity to be represented in policymaking through our elected members of Congress. This ruling is an important step in restoring the rule of law and proper balance in our constitutional system of government.”

Oak Hill Speech Pathologist Receives November Cause for Applause

0

Jamie Smith, speech pathologist at Oak Hill School, is the November recipient of the EVSC’s Cause for Applause Award.  The Cause for Applause awards recognize employees who go above and beyond normal job duties.

Smith was nominated for the award by one of her students, now a seventh grader at North Junior High. In her nomination letter, the student, who has a stuttering problem, wrote that Smith is always available at any time to help. “Over the summer I was having some problems with my fluency so I emailed her and she gave me different strategies to help me out.” The student goes on to say that Smith has also offered to Skype and do private classes so further help her progression over the summer. During the school year, Smith takes the extra time to email her students the day before to remind them of their speech appointment the next day.

The student ends her letter by stating, “She [Smith] works very hard and is great at what she does. She definitely deserves the Cause for Applause award!”

Anyone can nominate an employee of the EVSC for the award. Deadline for nominations is the third Friday of each month. Go to http://www.evscschools.com/community/nominate-evsc-employees-exemplary-work for the nomination form. Paper forms are available at the schools for those without access to the Internet.

VETERANS DAY BY THE NUMBERS

0

By Tom Purcell

“I had no idea that many men and women have served our country in our armed forces.”

“Ah, yes, you refer to Veterans Day facts and figures shared by the U.S. Census Bureau. Did you know there are 19.3 million U.S. veterans living today? Roughly half are 65 and older. Nearly 2 million are under the age of 35.”

“That’s interesting stuff. Those older than 65 served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and the 2 million under 35 served mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan after 911?”

“You are correct. According to statistics released by the Department of Veterans Affairs, World War II vets are dying at a rate of approximately 492 a day. This means there are approximately only 855,070 veterans remaining of the 16 million who served our nation in World War II.”

“The greatest generation!”

“My father served in the Korean War. He is 82. Of the 5.7 million who served during that war, 2 million veterans are still with us.”

“What about the Vietnam War?”

“Of the 8.7 million veterans who served in that horrific war, 7 million are still alive. To round out the numbers, 5.5 million veterans served during the Gulf War era, which spans 1990 to the present. Roughly 4.4 million veterans served during peacetime. Other veterans had it awfully tough.”

“How so?”

“Nearly 63,000 living veterans served during the Vietnam War and both periods of the Gulf War. They served from August 1990 through August 2001 and then from September 2001 and beyond.”

“God bless them for their service.”

“Some of our living veterans served through three wartime periods! Nearly 37,000 served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.”

“Wow.”

“The makeup of the armed services is changing as our demographics change. Though nearly 80 percent are ‘non-Hispanic white,’ nearly 12 percent are black, 6 percent are Hispanic, 1.5 percent are Asian and nearly 2.5 percent are Native Americans, Alaskans and Hawaiians.”

“What about women who serve?”

“Those numbers are growing, too. There are currently 1.6 million female veterans in our country.”

“We are lucky to still have these men and women with us and the purpose of Veterans Day is to honor all of those who have served. But what about the people who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country?”

“Did you know that nearly 1 million Americans have died for their country? Approximately 4,500 died during the American revolution.”

“I did not know that. What about our bloody Civil War?”

“Bloody is the right word. Nearly 370,000 Union soldiers and 135,000 Confederate soldiers died during that war. We lost nearly 120,000 veterans in World War I and nearly 405,000 in World War II. The Korean War claimed 34,000 and the Vietnam War 48,000.”

“Those are sobering numbers.”

“If there is any silver lining as far as war goes, it is that our modern war-fighting techniques and medical technologies are resulting in fewer battlefield deaths. Of the 1.5 million who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq, we have suffered approximately 6,500 losses. However, nearly 50,000 were wounded and many of them are still suffering from their disabilities.”

“We need to do more to help our suffering veterans.”

“That is exactly what Veterans Day is about. It is a special day when we honor all of those who have served. It is also a great day to give back.”

“Give back?”

“We can volunteer at a local veterans’ organization or provide financial support. CharityWatch.org has a list of legitimate organizations that provide help and resources to disabled veterans. I’m going to donate $50 now.”

“Now that’s the kind of Veterans Day number I prefer!”

D.J. Balentine named to Lute Olson Watch List

0

University of Evansville senior D.J. Balentine has been named to the 2015 Lute Olson Award Preseason Watch List in an announcement on Monday afternoon.

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I player who has played at least two seasons.  Freshmen and transfers are not eligible.  The award is named in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons.  Twenty-four of those seasons were spent at the University of Arizona.

Balentine returns for his senior season with the Purple Aces after leading the team through a perfect run in the 2015 CollegeInsider.com Tournament where he was named the Most Valuable Player.  That run, coupled with the return of all five starters have UE picked second in the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll.

Beginning the season with a total of 1,750 points, Balentine is the #2 scorer in the nation since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, behind only Tyler Haws of BYU.  Balentine has scored 1,475 points in the last two seasons while Haws has notched 1,543.

With a 95-65 win in the exhibition game against Wabash in the rearview mirror, Balentine and the Purple Aces have their sights set on Sunday’s regular season opener against Southeast Missouri State.  The game is set for 2 p.m. at the Ford Center.

Women’s soccer to face top seed Florida State in NCAA Tournament

0

After defeating Loyola in penalty kicks to win the Missouri Valley Conference Title, the University of Evansville women’s soccer team found out its NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon as the Purple Aces will head to Tallahassee, Fla. to face the top national seed – Florida State.

The NCAA Tournament match will take place at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, November 13 in Tallahassee.

“We’re excited, obviously it will be a challenge,” Aces head coach Krista McKendree said.  “The speed and physical play is something that we have not faced this season, but I think our girls will be energized enough to go out there and put their girls under some pressure as much as possible.”

Florida State earned its third ACC Tournament Championship in a row thanks to a victory over top-seeded Virginia on Sunday.  The Seminoles took down the Cavaliers by a 7-6 tally in penalty kicks to earn the win.  The defending national champions went 14-2-4 in 2015 and their victory on Sunday came against a 16-1-2 Cavalier squad.

“It is not surprising to me that we are playing such a high seed,” McKendree continued.  “I was expecting one of the very top teams and we’ll be ready to play.”

Evansville earned its fifth NCAA appearance thanks to a victory over Loyola by a 5-3 tally in penalty kicks on Sunday.  UE’s other appearances in the tournament came in 1998, 1999, 2001 and, most recently, 2008.

Sunday’s win gave the Aces their seventh Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship and the first since defeating Indiana State by a 2-0 final in 2008.  UE won the league tournament each season from 1996 through 1999 and again in 2001.

The winner of Friday evenings match will take on either LSU or South Alabama in the second round, which will take place between Nov. 20 and 22.
