Governor Pence Receives Health Policy Award for HIP 2.0

0

The Indiana Hospital Association (IHA) presented Governor Mike Pence with the 2015 John C. Render Award for Health Policy for his work securing the Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0, or HIP 2.0. The award was presented at IHA’s annual meeting in Carmel.

“I’m honored to receive the John C. Render Award for Health Policy today as a reaffirmation of the broad success and support the Healthy Indiana Plan has garnered since its rollout last January,” said Governor Mike Pence. “Because of the Indiana Hospital Association members here today, as well as the many service providers around the state, Indiana has served as a national leader in reforming Medicaid through the HIP 2.0 program by implementing this consumer-driven model.”

The John C. Render Award for Health Policy is presented to individuals who have had a significant influence on health care policy affecting Indiana hospitals. This award was created and named for John C. Render whose advocacy for positive health policy has benefitted Hoosiers around the state.

HIP 2.0 is an affordable health insurance program for uninsured adult Hoosiers ages 19-64. Hoosiers can receive medical, dental, and vision coverage and also have the option to receive assistance in purchasing private-market insurance, called HIP Link, through their employers.

Honoring our veterans

Today marks Veterans Day and an opportunity to thank our military members – both past and present – for their service to our nation.

It’s important we stand up for our men and women in uniform, andtheir families who have sacrificed so much in the name of freedom. We are blessed to live in a country where our rights are guaranteed and power belongs to the people.

Click here to Tweet a Veterans Day message.

As your state representative, I have supported measures to ease the burden on our state’s military personnel and veterans. In fact, a new law was passed this year to help lower Indiana’s unemployment rate among veterans, as well as extend the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to protect members of the Indiana National Guard while they are deployed or serving on active duty.

We can never fully repay the courageous men and women who answered our nation’s call – all for the promise of a safer America. That is why it’s important, not just on Veterans Day but every day, to show our gratitude to those who have served.

Join me on Saturday for the Four Freedoms Veterans parade at 2:30 pm on Riverside Drive in Evansville to celebrate our local veterans.

If you are a veteran, thank you for your service.

May God bless you and continue to bless America.

Sincerely,

State Rep. Wendy McNamara

BREAKING NEWS: CHARLES BERGER VIE FOR JUDICIAL NOMINATING COMMITTEE

0

WELL KNOWN AND HIGHLY RESPECTED LOCAL ATTORNEY CHARLES BERGER VIE FOR APPOINTMENT TO NOMINATING COMMISSION.

Lawyers mostly in southern Indiana are selecting one of their peers to have a say in who will be the next justice appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court.

Four candidates are seeking to replace Stephen L. Williams of Terre Haute on the Judicial Nominating Commission. Williams’ term expires at the end of the year. The commission is expected early next year to interview applicants to replace Justice Brent Dickson, who this week announced he will retire in the spring. The commission will select three finalists from whom Gov. Mike Pence will appoint the next justice.

Vying to replace Williams on the commission are Charles L. Berger, Evansville; Daniel E. Moore, Jeffersonville; Ross E. Rudolph, Evansville; and John M. Westercamp, Zionsville.

Williams is the attorney-elected commission representative from Court of Appeals 1st District. Attorneys in the first district may return ballots to the Supreme Court Clerk’s Office by 4 p.m. Nov. 20. Votes will be counted and a winner announced after that time. Ballots were mailed to eligible attorneys in October.

The judicial selection process to replace Dickson will begin Thursday, when applications will be made available on the Supreme Court website. The Judicial Nominating Commission is expected to interview applicants seeking Dickson’s position sometime in January.

Meanwhile, the term of gubernatorial appointee Tom Rose of Indianapolis, representing COA’s 2nd District, also expires at the end of the year. Gov. Mike Pence has yet to announce an appointment.

The commission consists of three non-lawyer members appointed by the governor, three attorney members elected by eligible attorneys, and is chaired by the chief justice. Members are chosen and elected in staggered terms from each of the state’s three geographical COA districts.

Indiana House Democrats advance bold plan to improve state’s roads and bridges

1

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath from Michigan City announced today that House Democrats will propose a $2 billion plan to improve state and local roads and bridges over the next four years.

Pelath said the Crossroads Tomorrow plan [get a summary here], to be offered during the 2016 session of the Indiana General Assembly, would direct proceeds from the state’s gasoline sales tax and special fuels sales tax toward state and local infrastructure projects. Combined, the two taxes generate close to $525 million a year.

In announcing the plan, Pelath issued the following statement:

“After a summer that Indiana motorists would like to forget, even the sunniest optimist agrees that the Legislature must do more to improve the state of our state’s roads and bridges.

“Since our Republican colleagues have encouraged us to play an active role in the debate that will be coming in the 2016 legislative session, Indiana House Democrats have decided we must take some bold steps to help Indiana resume its place as the ‘Crossroads of America.’

“The need is apparent to everyone, even those who claim that the state is doing everything in its power to improve infrastructure. Such claims ring hollow when over 1,000 Indiana bridges are deemed ‘structurally deficient’ and one of our state’s major arteries – Interstate 65 – was closed from Lafayette to Lebanon for over a month and more than $70 million in taxpayer dollars was spent on slipshod asphalt that fell apart as soon as a car touched it. The windfall that was Major Moves is all but tapped out.

“Indeed, if there weren’t such serious problems out there, I seriously doubt the governor would be suggesting a new infrastructure plan as he’s trying to convince people that everything is OK.

“The problem is that the governor’s plan is meek. It doesn’t go far enough, it ignores the needs of local government, and it relies upon bonding, which would put a greater burden on taxpayers for years into the future. You can judge its effectiveness by the tepid response it received from the leadership of his Republican supermajorities, none of whom erupted into paroxysms of joy when the plan announced.

“Our plan is based on a simple concept. Every tax you pay at your gas station should go to fix your street or highway or bridge.

“Right now, when you fill your car with gasoline, you pay a sales tax on your purchase. Those taxes go just about everywhere except toward the road you drive.

“This plan would fairly redirect more than $500 million a year toward highway maintenance and construction. Over the time frame of the governor’s plan, it would provide $2 billion for roads and bridges.

“It would make sure that locals get a piece of the pie, and it would not take an extra dime out of anyone’s pocket.

“Take a moment to consider the lasting value here. Unlike some other public services, roads have lasting, measurable value. Once skilled workers are done with the job, the improved road and bridge becomes a lasting asset to businesses, manufacturers, and people earning a living. They in turn can generate new jobs and revenues for the rest of us…and before you know it, the reserves are back where the accountants don’t get the shakes any more.

“Would this fix every road or bridge in Indiana? No, but it is bolder, fairer, and more understandable to the public than anything suggested so far. It is what is needed in Indiana right now.”
