ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Evansville IceMen embark on a four-game road trip, after winning three of their last five games and earning points in four straight home contests. The team first travels to Tulsa for the first-ever ECHL meeting with the Oilers at 7:05pm Friday, before facing the Missouri Mavericks Saturday at 7:05pm and Sunday at 4:05pm in Independence, MO. The IceMen finish off the road trip Tuesday in Cincinnati against the Cyclones at 7:35pm EST.

NO STRANGER TO OVERTIME
Three of Evansville’s last five games have been decided in overtime or a shootout. The IceMen defeated Rapid City 2-1 in a shootout February 6 at the Ford Center, and followed it up with a 3-2 overtime win at home against Fort Wayne February 9. Sunday in Evansville, the IceMen dropped a heartbreaker on Heart Night 4-3 late in overtime against Cincinnati. Nine of Evansville’s 47 games have been decided after regulation, including two overtime contests against Missouri, whom the IceMen meet twice this weekend.

HEIR JORDAN
IceMen center Jordan Sims led the team with five points (three goals, two assists) in four games last week, and was nominated for the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The rookie forward from Fort Wayne, IN had his first career two-goal game Friday in Evansville’s 4-3 win over Kalamazoo and added a goal Sunday in a 4-3 overtime loss to Cincinnati. In 39 games, Sims has 11 goals, 14 assists, and leads the team with a plus-14 rating.

OIL COUNTRY
The IceMen and Oilers last met in the CHL way back on February 17, 2012, with Evansville winning that matchup 4-2. The two teams will play for the first time in the ECHL Friday at 7:05pm at the BOK Center in Tulsa, and will meet three more times this season in Evansville: March 4-5 and April 2. The Oilers are led by goaltender Kevin Carr and rookie forward Dan DeSalvo. Carr is 20-15-2 in 37 appearances and is sixth in the league in goals-against average (2.11), and third in minutes (2,188) and saves (901). DeSalvo has 12 goals in 46 games, and is third among league rookies in assists (30) and points (42).

INDEPENDENCE DAY
The Missouri Mavericks have been the gold standard of the ECHL this season and lead the league in wins (39), points (81), goals for (167) and goals against (101). Their 22-2-0 record at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena is also the best home record in the league. The IceMen will get two chances at redemption Saturday and Sunday, after dropping the first three meetings of the season, the last two in overtime. Evansville’s last win over the Mavericks was a 4-1 tilt January 9, 2015 in Missouri, and was Al Sims’ first win as Head Coach of the IceMen.

The IceMen will be hosting a book drive for three games in March. The team will be collecting new or gently used beginner to teen books Friday March 4th and Saturday March 5th when Evansville hosts the Tulsa Oilers and again Sunday March 6th when the IceMen take on the Wichita Thunder. Bookmarks will be handed out for every book donated, and anyone with a bookmark can present it at the Ford Center Ticket Office for a discounted ticket to the IceMen game Wednesday March 9th. All of the books will be donated to Evansville Hangers.

VCSO Regional Jail Officers Course Graduates 14 New Officers

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office graduated fourteen (14) new confinement officers from the Indiana Law Enforcement Basic Jail Officers Course this past Friday, February 12th, 2016. Officers from Warrick, Spencer, Dubois, Gibson and Vanderburgh counties completed the Basic Jail Officer’s Course.

In 2006, the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board approved the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office as a regional training site for this forty (40) hour course, which is required of all newly hired jail officers during their first year. The new officers were instructed in subjects such as: ethics, tactical communication, report writing, jail operations, physical security, searches, evidence gathering, booking and admissions, blood borne pathogens, cultural awareness, suicide prevention, mental illness and legal issues.

The regional officers returned to their respective agencies this week in order to continue additional facility specific training. Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office confinement officers will spend the next two weeks attending additional classroom and practical training, which will include topics such as: housing unit supervision, gang identification, defensive and physical tactics, record keeping and practical scenarios.

Upon completion of the classroom training, each new Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office confinement officer will continue with site specific, classroom instruction and then be assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) for an additional ten (10) weeks before being permitted to work alone.

At any given time the Sheriff’s Office houses over 500 inmates and nearly 100 work release participants within the confines of a 156,722 square foot facility. As an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy accredited provider, the Sheriff’s Office accepts applications from outside agencies to attend the Confinement Officer Training School at our facility.

 

 

Governor Pence and DWD Commissioner Steve Braun to Announce Recipients of $11 Million Skill Up Indiana Grant Funds

 Governor Mike Pence and Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Commissioner Steve Braun will announce recipients of the roughly $11 million in Skill UP Indiana grant funds on February 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the History Reference Room of the Indiana State Library. The Skill Up Indiana grant program provides funding to community partnerships to develop training and education programs that align with employer needs. Awardees will use grant funds to equip Hoosiers with the skills necessary to fill the one million jobs projected to be available over the next decade.

UE Women’s Tennis to Play Four Matches in Two Days

The University of Evansville Women’s Tennis Team (1-4, 0-0 MVC) is set to endeavor on a busy Friday and Saturday with four matches in two days this upcoming weekend.  On Friday, the Aces will travel to take on IUPUI and Ball State.  They will follow that with matches on Saturday at Findlay and Wright State.

The Aces are coming off a weekend that gave them their first victory of the season when they defeated Alabama A&M by a score of 6-1 last Friday.  Evansville took the match in dominant fashion winning all matches except one to secure the 6-1 victory.

Coach Jayson Wiseman said on the win, “It was good to get our first win of the season and our team played well in both doubles and singles to earn the victory.”

On Friday, UE will start things off at 10:30 a.m. CST against IUPUI.  The Jaguars will come into the match with a record of 2-8.  They are currently riding a two game winning streak with wins over Bowling Green and Valparaiso. They will then follow that up with a 6:00 p.m. CST affair against Ball State who comes into the match with a record of 3-2 with their most recent match resulting in a 5-2 victory over Western Kentucky.

At 10:00 a.m. CST on Saturday the Aces will kick things off with Findlay in Findlay, OH.  They will follow that up with a match against Wright State in Dayton, OH.  The Raiders come in with a record of 3-1 and conference record of 1-0. They are most recently coming off a 5-2 win over conference foe Bowling Green.

This following weekend will mark the Aces first home action of the season when they host UT Martin and Eastern Illinois both on Saturday February 27th at Tri-State Athletic Club.

 

Majority finds no violation of deceased inmate’s 8th Amendment rights

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed summary judgment for a correctional medical services provider in a lawsuit alleging the company violated an inmate’s Eighth Amendment rights against cruel and unusual punishment.

Nicholas Glisson died at Plainfield Correctional Facility Oct. 10, 2010, after he was transferred there from the Reception Diagnostic Center. He had laryngeal cancer and suffered many health issues due to that. His mother, Alma Glisson, sued Correctional Medical Services Inc., also known as Corizon Inc., and the district court granted summary judgment in all federal claims in favor of CMS. Glisson appealed the summary judgment saying the failure to implement a particular Indiana Department of Correction OC directive violated Nicholas Glisson’sher son’s Eighth Amendment rights.

In the majority opinion by Ccircuit Jjudge William Bauer, he says wrote Alma Glisson did not present sufficient evidence to demonstrate a genuine issue of material fact. He Bauer said Glisson she failed to show how non implantation implementation of the directive led to a widespread practice of deliberate indifference against not only Nicholas Glisson, but other inmates as well.

Bauer wrotesays Alma Glisson needed to present a series of incidents that showed a violation of Nicholas Glisson’s constitutional rights, and she did not do so. Alma Glisson did present enough evidence that lack of a policy constitutes a policy in itself, but without a series of incidents to fall back on, the court could not infer a lack of policy was the result of deliberate indifference.

Chief Judge Diane Wood dissented in the decision, saying policies are not always affirmatively stated, and a decision not to regulate can be a policy. He She says wrote Corizon CMS deliberately structured the delivery of medical care in a way that lacked critical oversight, which had fatal results.

Wood presentsed several facts which, taken together, she saidys, shows there are genuine issues of material fact and that a jury would conclude as much.
Wood saidys the Constitution doesid not require Corizon CMS to adopt the directive in question or any other document, but does require it to ensure a well-recognized risk for a defined class of prisoners be addressed and not left to happenstance. That did not happen, she said, and she recommended the case be remanded and brought to trial.

The case is Alma Glisson, as personal representative of the estate of Nicholas L. Glisson v. Indiana Department of Corrections,15-1419.

Aces complete opening night at MVC Championship

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Wednesday night saw the opening of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship for the Women’s Swimming and Diving team in Carbondale, Ill.

The Purple Aces currently place sixth with 54 points, only two points behind fifth-place Little Rock. Tied in first place are SIU and Northern Iowa with 72 points.

“I am very proud of the girls on the relays tonight,” Purple Aces head coach Rickey Perkins said.  “We had some fast splits. It’s a good sign for the rest of the weekend. We just need to stay relaxed, have fun, be a team, and compete with our hearts.”

Evansville’s group of Michaela Kent, Amy Smith, Kristen Myers, and Mackenzie Harris took to the pool in the 200 Medley Relay to kick off the championship in Wednesday’s final.  The group swam a time of 1:45.58 to finish in fifth place ahead of Little Rock.

The title went to Northern Iowa with a time of 1:42.37

The second event of the night was the 800 free relay.  Myers was joined by Madi Jones, Jessi Hildebrand, and Bridget Sheridan as the group clocked in a 7:55.36. Evansville took sixth in the event.

A full day of action is set for Thursday with the following events taking place: 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1 meter diving and 200 free relay.  Prelims take place at 11 a.m. with the finals going at 6 p.m.

Aces earn first win in Des Moines since 2010

Seniors pace Aces in victory

 DES MOINES, Iowa – For the first time since February of 2010, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team earned a win at the Knapp Center as the Purple Aces defeated Drake by a final of 80-74 on Wednesday evening.

D.J. Balentine led everyone with 26 points as he down 9 of his 24 attempts for UE (21-7, 10-5 MVC).  Egidijus Mockevicius, who had just four points at the break, broke out in the second half to finish with 21 tallies and 13 rebounds as he notched his 23rd double-double of the season.  Blake Simons also finished in double figures with 11 as he downed 5 out of 6 attempts.

Drake (6-21, 1-14 MVC) was led by Reed Timmer’s 16 points.  The sophomore connected on 10 of his 11 free throw attempts.

“We had good contributions from all of our guys,” UE head coach Marty Simmons said.  “Everyone wants to look at a team’s record, but Drake is a really good team.  They are young and extremely talented.  We are fortunate to come out with the win.”

An early run saw the Purple Aces jump out to an 11-2 lead, hitting 5 of its first 6 shots.  D.J. Balentine opened the game up with a three and scored 7 of UE’s first 11 points in the first three minutes of the game.

Blake Simmons nailed a three to give UE a 14-5 lead and that edge grew to 18-5 in the first six minutes of the game.  Over the final minutes of the half, it was Drake who was able to grab the momentum back from the Aces.  Trailing by as many as 13 points in the opening stanza, the Bulldogs got within four as they trailed by that margin (36-32) at the break.  The Aces went without a basket for the final six minutes, missing their final six attempts.

Balentine finished with 16 points in the half while Simmons tallied five.

In the opening moments of the second period, Drake got within two points at 38-36.  The experienced Evansville team regained its foothold in the game, going on a 10-0 run that saw UE take its largest lead of the day at 52-38.  Egidijus Mockevicius had two and-ones in the rally.

The largest lead the Aces would enjoy came with 9:29 remaining, but the Bulldogs pushed back.  With Evansville up 67-53, Drake fought back, scoring the next nine points to get within five at 67-62.  Mockevicius ended the run with a bucket, but a triple by Drake cut the gap to just four with just over two minutes remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Balentine hit one of the biggest shots of the night, connecting on a triple to put UE up 72-65.  He did it again on the next possession to give the Aces a 75-67 lead.  With 1 minute left, Graham Woodward knocked down another triple to get DU within five once again, making it a run that saw the Bulldogs connect on 9 out of 10 attempts.

From there, it was all Aces as they were able to finish with the 80-74 triumph.  The Aces hit 51% of their attempts in the win.

A special day will be on tap for Saturday when the Aces welcome Southern Illinois for a 3 p.m. game.  UE legend Jim Byers will be honored for his 50 years with the University of Evansville.  The first 5,000 fans will also be given a D.J. Balentine autograph card celebrating him breaking the all-time program scoring mark.
