Aces Take On UNI Wednesday Evening In Cedar Falls

  Another big Missouri Valley Conference tilt looms for the Purple Aces men’s basketball team as they trek to Cedar Falls to face UNI on Wednesday evening.

A record Ford Center crowd of 10,034 were in attendance as the Purple Aces faced off against #22 Wichita State on Sunday.  D.J. Balentine scored 18 points to lead the way as the Aces fell by a final of 78-65, he now has 2,253 points in his career as he chases Colt Ryan’s program mark of 2,279.  Egidijus Mockevicius registered 16 points and 12 rebounds as he knocked down 12 of his 14 free throw attempts.

Balentine is also looking for his 100th career double digit game in his career.  He has 99 in his career and will look for the mark in the McLeod Center where he has averaged 20.3 points per game, including his career day two years ago where he registered 43 points.  In Sunday’s game, he jumped past Larry Humes into second place on the Aces’ all-time scoring list.

Mislav Brzoja has averaged 18 points per game in the last two outings.  He posted his top game at UE in Carbondale last week, posting 25 points.  He followed that up with 11 against Wichita State.

UNI comes into Wednesday’s match-up with a 12-11 overall mark and 4-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play.  The Panthers are coming off of a 67-58 home victory over Southern Illinois as Bennett Koch recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds while hitting 8 of his 9 attempts.  Four Panthers average double figures, led by Wes Washpun’s 14.3 points per game; Matt Bohannon checks in with 12.3 points and his hit a tea

SPRING CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING DATES SET

The St. Mary’s Sports Concussion Alliance is offering two baseline screening dates for local athletes. These baseline tests and post-injury tests are computerized assessments that measure Reaction Time, Memory Capacity, Speed of Mental Processing, and Executive Functioning of the brain. They also record baseline concussion symptoms and provide extensive information about the athlete’s history with concussions. This test lasts about thirty minutes.

A concussion is a brain injury. Concussions are a serious matter and can occur in any sport or recreational activity. Even a minor bump or blow to the head can be serious. Signs and symptoms of a concussion can show up immediately or may show up some time after the injury occurs.

Since it began, the Concussion Alliance has performed baseline testing on about 10,000 student athletes. It handles roughly 25 cases of concussion per year for each school it works with and has treated an estimated 1,500 concussion cases at the high school level.

EVANSVILLE, IN— The Evansville ThunderBolts, in concert with the NA3HL elite junior hockey league and the Atlanta Capitals have announced the addition of one extra game on the ThunderBolts home schedule for the current 2015-16 season.

The ThunderBolts home game to be added on their schedule has been set for SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH when Evansville plays host to their NA3HL South Division rivals, the Atlanta Capitals. Game time is set for 6:30 PM AT SWONDER ICE ARENA.

The original playing date for this game was Friday, October 16th as the first game of a scheduled two-game series in Atlanta. However, this game was postponed due to mechanical difficulties incurred by the ThunderBolts team bus. This game date has been reset with the venue being moved here to Evansville. With the new, re-scheduled date set for Valentine’s Day, the ThunderBolts organization is planning a major promotional extravaganza.

Since the Atlanta club was already slated to be in Evansville for a two-game series against the ThunderBolts on Friday, February 12th and Saturday, February 13th, this Evansville/Atlanta weekend series has now become a three-games in three nights’ series at the ‘Bolts’ hockey home of Swonder Ice Arena.

Governor Pence Joins Indiana Toll Road Concession Co. to Announce $200 Million Road Improvement Project

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today joined the Indiana Toll Road Concession Co. (ITRCC) to announce that the ITRCC is commencing a $200 million, two-year road improvement project on the Indiana Toll Road that is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs in northern Indiana.

 

“In Indiana, we’ve made great progress on our standing as the Crossroads of America, and today’s announcement is yet another installment to ensure the quality of our roads and bridges,” said Governor Pence. “As our economy continues to grow with more Hoosiers working than ever before, I am confident that our roads will continue to serve as the arteries of economic development and help Indiana businesses get goods and products to market. I’m thankful to the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company for its continued work to modernize and upgrade the Indiana Toll Road, and I look forward to its completion as the largest project on the Indiana Toll Road since its initial construction.”

 

The project, called 80/90 PUSH (Pavement Upgrade for a Superior Highway), covers the 70-mile section of the Toll Road from Portage through Elkhart and will include all interchanges, mainline pavements, shoulder replacement, and various bridge repairs and widening works. The project will also allow for the installation of “Intelligent Transportation Systems” to improve safety and information service for Toll Road customers. Construction work is scheduled to begin in March 2016.

 

The ITRCC has awarded the contract for the 80/90 PUSH project to Indiana-based Rieth-Riley Construction Co., and the 80/90 PUSH project is funded in its entirety by the ITRCC.

 

“The 80/90 PUSH project is a critical investment in safety and service on the Indiana Toll Road,” said ITRCC CEO Ken Daley. “This is the start of an exciting new phase for the ‘Crossroads of America’, and the ITRCC has pledged to modernize the Toll Road and rebuild the ITR travel plazas. We are very pleased to be partnering with Rieth-Riley for 80/90 PUSH, a local company with a long history of quality work on the Toll Road and the same commitment we have in supporting local businesses. Together, we have developed a work schedule to fast-track construction and minimize impacts, particularly during high traffic periods.”

Eagles face Drury in GLVC Championship rematch

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball returns to action when it heads west to take on No. 12 Drury University Thursday at 5:45 p.m. and Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday at 1 p.m.

USI (10-9, 3-8 GLVC) is looking to stop an eight-game losing streak, its longest skid since losing 12 straight in 1991-92. To do so, the Screaming Eagles must earn their first-ever win over Drury in Springfield, Missouri.

 

Thursday’s game is a rematch of last year’s GLVC Tournament Championship that saw Drury rally from an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat the Eagles, 68-65.

 

Leading USI into the weekend are junior forward Hannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois), junior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) and sophomore forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois). Wascher is averaging a team-best 14.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while Marcum is chipping in 12.3 points and 3.3 assists per contest. Grooms is contributing 10.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per outing.

 

Drury (16-3, 9-2 GLVC), which has won six straight games to take the lead in the GLVC West Division, is led by senior guard Annie Armstrong and junior guard Alice Heinzler. Armstrong is averaging a team-high 15.0 points, while Heinzler is contributing 13.1 points per appearance.

 

Missouri S&T (6-12, 2-9 GLVC), which has lost three straight games and eight of the last nine games, is led by sophomore forward Bria Pierce and junior guard/forward Jamy Douvier. Pierce is averaging a team-best 11.1 points per game, while Douvier is chipping in 8.9 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds per contest for the Miners, who host Bellarmine University Thursday.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team (14-7, 6-5 GLVC) is making its second Great Lakes Valley Conference road swing through Missouri in a month when it visits Drury University Thursday (12-7, 7-4 GLVC) and Missouri University of Science & Technology (8-12, 4-7 GLVC) Saturday. Tip-off for USI and Drury on Thursday is 7:45 p.m., while the start time for USI-Missouri S&T is slated for 3 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles were 2-0 on their first trip through Missouri, defeating Rockhurst University, 79-71, and William Jewell College, 86-76, in the first week of January.

This Week’s USI Men’s Basketball Quick Notes: 
USI finishes homestand on positive note. The University of Southern Indiana finished the homestand on a positive note, posting a 98-81 victory over Saint Joseph’s College. USI shot 59.3 percent from the field and was led by junior guard Bobo Drummond‘s game-high 22 points.

Deuces-wild for Drummond. Junior guard Bobo Drummond has hit for 22 points in three of the last four games. Drummond is 24-of-52 from the field (.462) and has hit 14 three-point field goals in the four games.

Stealing a record. Junior guard Jeril Taylor has a team-best 45 steals through 21 games and is on pace to challenge the USI single-season record of 66 which was set by Stan Gouard in 1994-95

Eagles overall. Junior guard Jeril Taylor leads the Eagles this year with 16.9 points (17.0 in GLVC action) and 7.2 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Alex Stein follows with 14.0 points per contest.

Freshman consistency. Freshman guard Alex Stein has been a model of consistency averaging 14.0 points per game and has posted double-digits in 12 of the last 13 games (13.7 points per game).

On the road in 2015-16.  USI is 2-3 on the road in 2015-16, 5-4 overall (road and neutral site games) this year. Junior guard Jeril Taylor is averaging 19.4 points per road game, 16.7 on the road and neutral sites.

Finding the right road. The Eagles will be searching for the right road this week, looking to break a three-game road losing streak.

Leaving January behind, looking for strong finish. USI stumbled in January, going 4-5. The Eagles were 6-5 in January last year before finishing strong with a 6-1 February in 2014-15.

USI vs. Drury. USI leads the all-time series with Drury University, 10-8, but the teams are tied 3-3 playing in Springfield, Missouri, since 2000. The Eagles lost on the road to the Panthers last year, 80-59.

Drury in 2015-16. The Panthers of Drury are 12-7 overall, 7-4 in the GLVC, after splitting last week. Drury, which is 6-3 at home this year, has lost two of its last three games. More on Drury can be found at DruryPanthers.com.

USI vs. Missouri S&T. USI leads the all-time series with Missouri University of Science & Technology, 13-3, and has a 4-0 advantage in the games in Rolla, Missouri, since 2000. The Eagles took the only meeting last year, 84-58.

Missouri S&T in 2015-16. The Miners of Missouri S&T, who host Bellarmine University Thursday before welcoming USI, are 8-12 overall, 4-7 in the GLVC, after going 0-2  last week.
