0

Sixteen student-athletes have earned a spot on the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference women’s soccer scholar-athlete teams, as announced by the league office today. All posted a GPA of 3.6 or higher.

Earning recognition from the MVC from the Purple Aces were: Allile Arguello, Bronwyn Boswell and Colleen Dierkes.  Arguello and Boswell were named to the First Team while Dierkes earned an Honorable Mention.

Arguello arned a spot on the 2015 MVC All-Tournament Team and was also named a Second Team All-Conference player in 2015.  The senior played in 18 matches and tied for second on the squad with seven points while also tying for the team high with three goals.  Arguello notched 32 shots (second on the team) and netted a penalty kick for the game winner in a 1-0 win over Missouri State on Oct. 29.  She earned the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award in each of the last two years and is also a 3-time MVC Honor Roll member.  Arguello boasts a 3.931 GPA in Biology.

Boswell won the Elite 18 Award at the 2015 MVC Tournament and led the Aces with 8 points in 2015 and tied for the team lead with three goals this season, took a team-high 53 shots.  She took six shots in the MVC Championship match against Loyola and had the game-winner in a September 13 victory over IUPUI.  Boswell earned the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award in her first two years and also made the MVC Honor Roll both years.  The 2-time All-MVC First Team player was on the All-Freshman Team in 2013.  In 2014, Boswell was a NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Great Lakes Region Second Team player.  Boswell has a 3.976 GPA in Exercise Science.

Colleen Dierkes was named to the 2015 MVC All-Tournament Team after scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 win over UNI in the semifinals on Nov. 6.  She played in 19 matches in 2015 and registered three goals, tying for the team high; she had 13 shots with four being on goal.  Dierkes earned the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award in 2014-15 and has been named to the MVC Honor Roll in each of her first two seasons at UE.  She has a 3.79 GPA in Global Business.

This season, 43 student-athletes were nominated for the Valley’s scholar-athlete team. The criteria for the honor parallels the CoSIDA standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative gpa (on a 4.00 scale).  Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or the MVC Championship.  Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.  Sports Information Directors at MVC institutions voted for the team.

Drake, Evansville, Indiana State and Missouri State each contributed three members to the list. Seven of the student-athletes recieved first team honors in 2013, 2014 or both.  Cassie Le of Missouri State and Sydney Lovelace of Indiana State were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District for their respective regions.

GIVING THANKS

1

By Susan Stamper Brown

It’s almost Thanksgiving. The fireplace inside crackles while the snow outside falls, painting an exceptionally-Alaskan scene as I write. It’s also a reminder this is the time of year I receive correspondence from thoughtful people asking how a particular American hero, a man who gave up his youth to serve this great nation under four presidents, is doing. He’s home this year, so I’ll be sure to mention your regards to him as we gather around the Thanksgiving table.

He’s not just an American hero, he’s a personal one too, years-back rescuing me from the kind of desperation that widowhood painfully brands on its victims. It’s been a tough road, thanks to a world at war. I’ve spent more Thanksgivings alone than not, staring at the picture taken at a castle in Scotland, representing the day God showed me he could turn “ashes” into beauty. He’s really good at that, you know.

My hero, who is also my friend, fully understood my brokenness and accepted me just as I was. He proposed. I accepted, and from start to finish, he planned our wedding, including the flowers, cake, and a Scottish pastor who surprised us by bringing a group of his kindhearted congregants to fill the would-be empty chapel with the warmth and kindred spirit true Christianity provides.

All I had to do is accept his proposal and board a plane bound for a new life. I’ve never been the same. God offers each of us a similar “proposal” with a heavenly twist. He longs to exchange the ashes of our lives for something beautiful…eternal — if we say “yes” to him. Our ashes for his beauty is not a fair exchange. Even still, the “bridegroom” knocks and waits… “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life,” John 3:16 tells us.

So, Thursday is Thanksgiving and my heart overflows. I’m thankful, in no particular order, for a wide assortment of things. I’m thankful for strong coffee. And pizza. I’m thankful I live in the most wild and wonderful place on the planet and that the grizzlies on my mountain finally hibernated. I’m thankful the wolf which successfully evades every Kodak moment I attempt to shoot, remains afraid of me because I’d hate to have to shoot him with my gun.

I’m thankful for indoor plumbing that keeps me from using the outhouse. I am thankful my freezer is stocked with caribou and salmon, and that the mashed potatoes, currant jam, and apple-strawberry-rhubarb pie on our Thanksgiving table come from our garden.

I’m thankful for my rescue dogs, who in their own unique ways, have really rescued me. And for my wonderful family who loves me and dear friends who complete me. And I’m thankful, that sometimes at church, I can almost hear what sounds like my dad’s voice, bombastically belting out a hymn’s chorus during worship when I close my eyes. I’m thankful for my faith and the freedom to practice it here in America. I’m thankful that our forefathers penned the U.S. Constitution so prudently, America hasn’t buckled under the weight of this administration. And I’m thankful for the patriots among us who are willing to sacrifice their all in its defense. And I’m overwhelmingly thankful that one glance out my kitchen window reminds me that no matter how crazy this world gets, the One who created it remains in control.

And, I am so very thankful for you, my readers, for whether we agree or not, we can at least celebrate together our freedom of speech. And, of course it goes without saying, I am really, really thankful that the too-many-times empty seat at the Thanksgiving table will be warmed this year by the one who warms my heart.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Indiana county to allow Nativity scene with Bill of Rights

0

IL NEWS for www.theindianalawyer.com

A southeastern Indiana county that was at the center of a legal battle over a Nativity scene on its courthouse lawn will allow a mix of religious and secular displays this holiday season, including a manger holding the Bill of Rights.

The Indianapolis Star reports the Franklin County courthouse, 70 miles southeast of Indianapolis, also will include other secular displays, such as winter solstice banners. The displays result from a lawsuit filed last December by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation arguing the privately owned Nativity scene violated the First Amendment because it represents an endorsement of religion.

A judge ruled in September there’s no proof of a constitutional violation and said any alleged misconduct was corrected when county officials enacted an ordinance permitting public use of the lawn.
