“FAILURE OF JUSTICE”: STATEMENT ON BREANN LEATH KILLER’S LENIENT SENTENCE

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Earlier today, Senator Braun released the following statement on the sentencing of Elliahs Dorsey to 25 years for attempted murder of his fiancé, 15 years of probation, and 5 years time-served for murdering mother and IMPD Officer Breann Leath in cold blood.

“It’s disgraceful that the killer of IMPD Officer Breann Leath is getting off with 25 years plus probation. Officer Leath’s killer should have received the maximum sentence possible, but instead he got less than half of what the state was asking for. That this man may see the outside of a jail cell again is a failure of justice. It’s my hope that Officer Leath’s family and colleagues can find solace in her memory and the gratitude of the state she served with honor and courage.” – Senator Mike Braun

HOTEL RATES FOR THE ECLIPSE GO AS HIGH AS $1,000

by Johnny Kincaid

APRIL 7, 2024

The much-anticipated eclipse is just about here, and thousands of visitors will come to the Evansville area to witness the rare event. Those of us who make Evansville our home will need patience to deal with some inconveniences.

Remember that this event will boost our local economy. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses will see increased traffic and bigger profits.

We looked into the hotel bookings for the Evansville area. Most people booked rooms for Sunday night, driving prices up. The Econo Lodge had the lowest rate in the city for Sunday night at $270.  The Holiday Inn Express, LaQuinta Inn, Fairfield Inn,  and Courtyard by Mariott were priced at about $500 for the night in our search on Trivago.com.

Prices for rooms in the surrounding area were similar, with Henderson ranging from $229 to $1,000 at the Holiday Inn Express. The Fairfield in Princeton charges $551 for Sunday night, and many hotels are sold out.

When we searched for rates for Monday, we found plenty of rooms available and prices close to the normal non-peak rates.

This data tells us that Sunday night will be the most popular day for arrivals, and they will leave right after the eclipse. Look for restaurants to be packed Sunday night for dinner through Monday lunch.

Traffic will be heavy on Sunday and Monday, and starting at 2:30, it will back up in all directions. Expect long delays on most major routes out of Evansville.

The best thing that we can do is remain patient and courteous. Show our visitors the hospitality that has always made Evansville a great place to live.

by Wendy McNamara

This week our community in Posey County received significant damage after a severe storm passed through, uprooting trees and destroying homes. During this difficult time, we can help our neighbors in several ways, including sharing information about helpful resources.

As cleanup efforts are underway, it’s important to report severe storm damage from April 2 by calling Indiana 211 at 866-211-9966 or visiting here. This number can also be used if you have any unmet needs like shelter, food or medication.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security will use these reports to determine damage estimates and develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process.
Agricultural damage should be reported to the Purdue Extension – Posey County by calling 812-838-1331 or visiting here.

Gov. Holcomb issues executive order to prepare for solar eclipse to support emergency response needs

1

INDIANAPOLIS-Governor Eric J. Holcomb signed an executive order to support the anticipated needs of Indiana’s emergency response, transportation, communication and critical infrastructure systems due to the expected high-number of visitors traveling to the state to view the total solar eclipse.

The executive order will allow Indiana to utilize resources from other states who are members of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). Once a governor issues an order, EMAC members can and will share equipment and communications systems to help support state resources to ensure the safety, care and welfare of residents if an emergency event occurs due to such a large event.

Over $300,000 awarded to landowners to fund soil conservation in Western Lake Erie Basin

0

INDIANAPOLIS (April 4, 2024) —The Indiana State Department of Agriculture and the USDA- Indiana Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced conservation practices will be implemented on over 1,700 Indiana farmland acres through the Western Lake Erie Basin Regional Conservation Partnership (RCPP).

The Western Lake Erie Basin Tri-State Collaboration Effort allows three states — Indiana, Michigan and Ohio — to come together to work with farmers, universities and non-governmental organizations and offer financial assistance to producers. The primary goal of this multi-state project is to protect the western basin of Lake Erie by reducing phosphorus and sediment loading, and algal blooms by using a suite of conservation practices working towards a 40 percent reduction of dissolved phosphorus.

“This funding goes a long way in ensuring we are enhancing and protecting the Western Lake Erie basin and in turn, members of those communities and the fish and wildlife that live there,” said Don Lamb, Indiana State Department of Agriculture director. “Collaborations like this Regional Conservation Partnership Program are incredibly valuable as we can share our finances, time, skills and talents to better our environment.”

For 2024, more than $307,036 was awarded to Indiana landowners within the watershed to implement a series of conservation practices. These practices will work to implement over 125 new acres of cover crops, apply Gypsum to over 925 acres and use precision nutrient management on over 660 acres. The goal of these practices is to prevent nutrient runoff and decrease algal blooms in order to protect the Western Lake Erie Basin region.

“When partners come together to combine resources and contacts, they create a stronger force and set the stage for a collaborative journey marked by shared success,” said Indiana NRCS State Conservationist, Damarys Mortenson. “The Tri-State RCPP partnership is heightening the efforts already being done in the Western Lake Erie basin, helping to deliver conservation at a scale never before achieved in the watershed.”

The Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) funding comes from a 2021 agreement totaling $7.8 million. Indiana, Michigan and Ohio each receive a portion of the funding to assist producers in implementing best management practices in an effort to reduce downstream runoff and ultimately decrease harmful algal blooms and phosphorus levels. The Tri-State RCPP promotes the coordination between NRCS and ISDA partners to implement conservation to landowners in the Western Lake Erie Basin. Counties in the Western Lake Erie Basin include parts of Adams, Allen, Dekalb, Noble, Steuben and Wells.

RCPP funding was made possible by USDA, our fellow partnering states and more than 40 collaborating public and private organizations on the state and local level. Eligible producers and forestland owners who wish to implement conservation practices on their land should discuss their options with their local district conservationist. NRCS accepts program applications year-round, to be considered for the current RCPP-WLEB funding cycle. For more information or to submit an application, contact your local district conservationist by visiting Farmers.gov/Service-locator.
