Romashkin leads men’s golf in first round of MVC Championship

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. – Daniil Romashkin is tied for 5th place as the University of Evansville men’s golf team completed the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship at The Golf Club at Porta Cima.

Romashkin carded a 1-under 71 and is tied for 5th place with two rounds remaining.  He led the Purple Aces contingent, who ranks in 9th place.  Carson Park was second for UE.  He completed Sunday’s round with a 3-over 75 to sit in a tie for 27th.

Nicholas Gushrowski and Caleb Wassmer tied for the 3rd-lowest score for Evansville.  The duo each posted scores of 77 and are tied for 37th.  Isaac Rohleder scored an 84 on Sunday and is in 48th.

Southern Illinois paces the individual standings with a 278.  The Salukis are seven in front of Missouri State and lead third place Valparaiso by 13 strokes.  Evansville completed the day with a 300 to rank in 9th place.  UE is just five strokes behind 4th-place Belmont.

Leon Heitz of SIU and Hampus Wilkstrom of MSU lead the individual standings.  Both scored a 5-under 67 on Sunday.  Round two will be played on Monday.

The developer for 420 Main Street is expected to soon secure a construction loan, setting off a chain of events that includes the City borrowing $9.6 million for an underground parking garage at the location.

City attorney Nick Cirignano said developer CRG of Indianapolis is expected to close on its loan with Old National Bank in April. The Evansville Redevelopment Commission agreed in December to delay a ground-breaking deadline after then-Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said the developer was navigating a volatile finance market.

The above photo is the site of the 400 block of Main Street has mostly been used as a storage site for other city projects since the demolition of the previous structure in 2021.

Winnecke is now the CEO of the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership, which controls the entity that owns the property. The closing of the construction loan triggers multiple events. Developer CRG must return the $1.9 million the City loaned for the 2021 implosion of the previous structure. That money belongs to Evansville’s bond bank, which provides short-term, low-interest funding.

The short-term loan is among investments already attached to the property. The state, through the Southwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, this year provided $3.8 million for the project.  Beth McFaddin-Higgins, SWIRDA chairwoman, said that money will assist with site preparation and the underground parking garage.

SWIRDA is the government agency that receives state funds through the READI program. It pays E-REP to administer those funds.

E-REP also received a $900,000 bridge loan in 2022 from Evansville’s United Leasing. That money helped cover the cost of demolishing the old 18-story structure, said Candace Chapman, EREP’s director of downtown development.

The old building decayed beyond repair under the ownership of a Maryland company, which sold the property for $1.8 million in 2019 to the now E-REP entity. The original redevelopment plan was for an 18-story, mixed-use building at the site. That plan changed after the original developer bailed on the project, and the current plan calls for a 161-unit, four-story building with a neighboring park.

State Budget Committee approving the release of $83 million in state funding

APRIL 21, 2024

 Today in response to the State Budget Committee approving the release of $83 million in state funding for the University of Southern Indiana. The funds will be used to renovate the Wright Building, the oldest building on campus, and the 30-year-old Health Professions Building. The project includes the renovation of 188,000 square feet across two interconnected buildings. In addition to updating classroom spaces in the Wright Building, the project includes improvements to HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, as well as communications technology and structural updates. The Health Professions Building project includes technology upgrades, expanded simulation space and the completion of third-floor renovations to expand classroom space, study areas and instructional labs. During the 2023 legislative session, local lawmakers voted in support of the funding as part of the state budget. The State Budget Committee formally approved releasing the funds on Friday, along with funding for several other projects across the state.

STATEHOUSE (April 19, 2024) – “The University of Southern Indiana’s health and nursing programs are critical in our fight against the health care worker shortage. I’m excited that these state dollars will help complete the final phase of the renovations to the Health Professions Building offering high-tech classrooms, equipment and simulation spaces to provide students with real-life scenarios. I look forward to the continued growth and success of this program and its students,” said State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville).

“USI is nothing short of an economic powerhouse for Southern Indiana, so it’s important to ensure their campus has the tools students and staff need to effectively learn and work. ISP Participating in National DEA Drug Take Back Day

Evansville – On Saturday, April 27, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is sponsoring the 26th nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative.  The “Take Back” initiative seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through proper disposal of prescription drugs.

Collection sites will be set up nationwide for expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs which will be properly disposed of without threat to the environment.  This program is for liquid and pill medications.  Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be taken.  Needles WILL NOT be accepted for disposal.  This service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Unused or expired medication in home cabinets is highly susceptible to theft, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Indiana State Police at Evansville, which is located at 19411 Hwy 41 North, will be accepting unused or expired prescription medication on Saturday, April 27, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Softball takes series with 5-2 win over Racers

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Hannah Hood was a perfect 3-for-3 while Sydney Weatherford picked up her sixth win of the season as the University of Evansville softball team clinched the series over Murray State with a 5-2 win on Sunday at  Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium.

Hood recorded three hits and two RBI as the Purple Aces tallied five runs on 10 hits.  Jess Willsey and Taylor Howe posted two hits apiece.  Weatherford threw another complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits.

Weatherford retired the side in order to begin the game and the offense was able to get the job done in the bottom of the frame.  Alexa Davis walked and Zoe Frossard followed with a single to left center.  Next up was Brooke Voss who double down the left field line to score Davis.

Jess Willsey’s sacrifice fly brought in Frossard to make it a 2-0 game while Jenna Nink’s RBI groundout solidified a 3-0 edge at the end of the 1st.  Evansville’s offense continued to roll, adding to the lead in the bottom of the third as Hannah Hood notched an RBI single.

Murray State got on the board with a single run in the top of the 5th.  The Racers were primed to cut into the deficit even more before Weatherford forced the inning-ending double play to keep the Aces up by three.

Back-to-back doubles from Willsey and Hood resulted in another run to push the lead back to four in the bottom of the fifth.  After the Racers got the run back in the sixth, they rallied in the seventh trailing by three.  With two outs, MSU recorded three singles to load the bases before Weatherford got a lineout to third to end the game.

On Wednesday, UE will be at Indiana State for a 3 p.m. game before playing its final home series of the season next weekend against Missouri State.

VU Track and Field adds more National Qualifiers after busy weekend at Little State

MARION, Ind. – The Vincennes University Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams put together another great weekend at the 2024 Indiana Little State Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.

The busy weekend actually got started on Thursday when VU sophomore and 2024 Indoor Heptathlon National Champion Olegs Kozjakovs made the short trip up to Terre Haute to take part in a two-day Decathlon at the 2024 Gibson Invitational.

Kozjakovs had a great showing in the events, competing against NCAA Division I athletes, taking the top spot in the shot put, discus and pole vault events to claim the top spot in the Decathlon with a total of 6,778 points.

“It was a long, cold weekend but we managed to accomplish a lot with the team,” VU Head Track and Field Coach Marty Rogier said. “The conditions, again, were cold and windy. I thought our team still competed very well.”

“Olegs got things started Thursday and Friday by winning the decathlon at the ISU Gibson Invite,” Rogier added. “The goal was just to survive and qualify in this 10-event competition. He had a steady performance with nothing great but nothing bad. His 6,778 points was still good for second on the National list and very close to a school record.”

The rest of the VU Track and Field teams headed up to Marion Friday for the first day of the two-day Little State Championships, where the Blazers again had a very good showing.

The VU men’s team scorers were led off by sprinters Olamipo Ladipo, 2024 Indoor 600 meter National Champion Desroy Jordan, Tumaini Skinner and Malik Ferdinand.

Ladipo and Jordan claimed a one-two finish in the 200 meter sprint, with Ladipo edging out Jordan with a time of 21.83 seconds, to Jordan’s 21.87 seconds.

Skinner and Ferdinand also claimed a one-two finish, this time in the 400 meter dash, with Skinner taking the top spot with a time of 49.93 and Ferdinand close behind at 50.43.

On the distance side, sophomore Isaac Stanford (Flora, Ill.) got the scoring started for the Blazers by taking third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.77 and a second-place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:56.45.

Freshman Cody Noel (Hebron, Ind.) took home fourth place in the 10k, crossing the finish line with a final time of 33:28.64.

Freshman Clinton Laguerre kept the action going in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 54.08 seconds, good for second place and a National Qualifier.

Freshman Brahym Sakka (Tunisia) placed fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.00 before teaming up with sophomores Matthew Gray (Washington, Ind.) and Isaac Stanford, as well as freshman Tanner Spence (Carmi, Ill.) to take seventh in the 4×800 relay with a time of 7:57.43.

The VU relay team of Tumaini Skinner, Clinton Laguerre, Olamipo Ladipo and Desroy Jordan closed out the VU scoring by taking third in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:24.43.

The Vincennes University men’s team took home second place as a team at the Little State Championships after scoring a total of 76 points over the weekend meet.

“We then moved to Indiana Wesleyan with the rest of the team to compete in the Little State Championships,” Rogier said. “This is a really great meet and I learned that this is the second longest running invitational in the United States. It’s the one meet we focus on trying to score as a team and not so much on individual performance.”
