Missouri Blanks IceMen to Win 13th Straight Game

0

The Evansville IceMen, who had won three of their last four games, returned home from Alaska only to run into the ECHL’s hottest team Wednesday. The Missouri Mavericks shutout the IceMen 3-0 at the Ford Center to win their 13th consecutive game dating back to October 31.

The Mavericks got to IceMen starting goalie Cody Reichard early, when Kane Lafranchise tipped a Josh Holmstrom centering pass through the five-hole to give Missouri a 1-0 lead.Tanner Barnes then scored 38 seconds later and again at 14:23, opening up the lead to 3-0. Evansville Head Coach Al Sims called his timeout after the third Missouri goal and Keegan Asmundson replaced Reichard in goal.

The IceMen managed just eight shots on Mavericks goalie Parker Milner in the first 40 minutes, as Milner and his defense held Evansville’s attack at bay.

The best IceMen scoring chance came short-handed in the third period, when leading scorer Tyson Fawcett skated in on Milner on a breakaway, but Fawcett clanked the shot of the post. Missouri coasted to victory the rest of the way, as Milner earned his second shutout of the season with 18 saves. Asmundson was replaced by Reichard again midway through the third period when his skated blade broke, and Reichard finished the game.

Reichard stopped 11 of 14 Mavericks shots in his second loss of the season, while Asmundson stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief.

The IceMen bounce back for two more home games this week, before playing four games in five days late next week. This Friday, the Fort Wayne Komets come to the Ford Center for the first time this season for a 7:15pm start. It’s Coldstone Blizzard’s Birthday Party, as IceMen mascot turns eight. The first 1,000 kids under 12 will receive a free Coldstone Blizzard bobblehead.

Evansville then hosts Quad City Sunday at 5:15pm when the Mallards come to the Ford Center. It’s Sunday Family Night, where fans can purchase tickets to the game and get a t-shirt and vouchers for a free popcorn and soda all for just $21.

JENNIFER SPURGEON OF WINAMAC INDIANA SELECTED AS FLORAGRAPH HONOREE ON DONATE LIFE FLOAT IN ROSE BOWL PARADE

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – December 1, 2015 – Jennifer Spurgeon will be honored on the 2016 Donate Life Rose Parade Float with other organ, eye and tissue donors who saved, healed and gave hope to thousands of people in need. Jennifer’s mother, Rhonda Berger, will travel to Pasadena, California to see Jennifer’s image transformed into one of 60 floragraphs that will adorn the float in the 2016 Rose Parade.

Jennifer Louise “Biffer” Spurgeon loved life. With her love for companion animals, she headed to college to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinary technician. She was enjoying life and moving closer to her dream when it all came to a halt with a devastating fire that took the life of Jennifer and her two roommates. Jennifer’s decision to be an organ and tissue donor provided hope and healing for others.

The 2016 Donate Life Rose Parade Float, Treasure Life’s Journey, features a colorful caravan with donor medal-inspired floragraphs honoring the invaluable treasure of a deceased donor’s life-saving gift. Twenty-four transplant recipients ride the float while sixteen living donors walk alongside the float. Dedicated roses are also placed on the float in honor of people touched by donation and transplantation.

As the world’s most visible campaign to inspire organ, eye and tissue donation, the float inspires viewers to Treasure Life’s Journey by helping the over one million people in need of life-saving or enhancing transplants each year. One person can save up to eight lives through organ donation and touch up to 50 more through tissue donation.

Indiana Donor Network and Donate Life Indiana are sponsoring Rhonda Berger to attend the Rose Bowl Parade. For more information about the Donate Life Rose Parade Float, visit the official float website at www.donatelifefloat.org.

More than 123,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant and nearly 1,500 of those people are Indiana residents. Many more benefit from donated tissue. To learn more about organ and tissue donation, please visit www.IndianaDonorNetwork.org

Governor Pence Directs State Agencies To Act On Recommendations From Governor’s Task Force on Drug Enforcement, Treatment, and Prevention

Governor Mike Pence has directed state agencies to act on five recommendations provided during the third meeting of the Governor’s Task Force on Drug Enforcement, Treatment, and Prevention. At the third Task Force meeting on November 19, 2015, a list of action items were discussed and accepted for recommendation to the Governor. Today, the Governor took the following actions:

Directed the Department of Correction to work with Starke and other northwest Indiana counties to adopt and pilot the Regional Therapeutic Communities program, which provides more treatment options for local officials in addressing drug addiction.

Directed the Professional Licensing Agency, to request that the INSPECT Oversight Committee explore possible measures to increase access to INSPECT for prescribers and dispensers (For more information on INSPECT, visit: http://www.in.gov/pla/inspect/).

Support the following legislative items, authored by Sen. Jim Merritt, by including them on the Governor’s legislative agenda:

    • Expand the Lifeline Law to include immunity beyond alcohol offenses.
    • Amend state law to require the Indiana State of Department of Health (ISDH) to issue a standing order for the dispensing of an overdose intervention drug, such as naloxone. This standing order will enable certain entities such as pharmacies to sell the drug to an individual without needing a prior prescription from a physician.
    • Modify the Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana in a way that maintains support for local coordinating councils (LCCs) but brings together state agencies and stakeholders to address the drug abuse issues Indiana is facing today.

Directed the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration to implement the Gold Card Program, which removes administrative burdens by allowing qualified physicians the ability to prescribe medications without prior authorization. The prior authorization process enables payers like the Indiana Medicaid Program a chance to review the medical evidence of a member’s health condition, as provided by the treating physician, so that the medical need for covering the service and treatment costs can be established.

“The Task Force’s latest recommendations serve as another important step forward in combating the scourge of drug addiction in the Hoosier state,” said Governor Pence. “As such, I am directing our state agencies to proceed in implementing its recommendations. As the Task Force continues to provide counsel and guidance, my administration will remain vigilant in addressing drug abuse and its heartbreaking repercussions in a comprehensive manner.”

Dr. Bucshon Votes to Overhaul Education System, Empower States and Parents

1

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives approved the conference report for S. 1177, the Every Student Succeeds Act,  a measure that replaces No Child Left Behind, reins in the federal government’s ability to intervene in K-12 education, restores state and local control, and empowers parents.

Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement regarding the passage of S. 1177:

“This legislation represents the first major education overhaul since 2002. With it, we reign in federal intervention, restore state and local control, and empower parents to make decisions on what’s best for their children regarding K-12 education. Without it, states and families will continue to be subject to the one-size-fits-all federal approach from the Department of Education that’s not working for students,” said Bucshon. “As a father of four, I understand how critical it is that education policy be set as close to the student as possible.  These common-sense reforms help accomplish that goal.”

S. 1177 passed the House by a vote of bipartisan vote and represents a melding of proposals approved separately by the House and Senate earlier this year.

BACKGROUND:

Congressman Bucshon recently traveled the 8th District during his “Education Tour,” where he met with area educators to discuss S. 1177 and other issues impacting their ability to teach students.

Highlights of S. 1177:

·         Places new and unprecedented restrictions on the authority of the Secretary of Education.

·         Prohibits the Secretary of Education from forcing, coercing, or incentivizing states into adopting Common Core. Those prohibitions can be found in sections 8544, 8525A, and 8527 of the legislation.

·         Ends the era of federally-mandated high-stakes testing.

·         Eliminates the federally-mandated one-size-fits-all-accountability system.

·         Repeals 49 ineffective and duplicative federal programs.

·         Provides states and schools with new funding and flexibility.

·         Offers parents more school choice.

What some major publications are saying:

Wall Street Journal: S. 1177 “would represent the largest devolution of federal control to the states in a quarter-century.” (WSJ; 11/30/15)

The Daily Caller: S. 1177 “will substantially limit the Department of Education and give more authority to state governments.” (Daily Caller; 12/1/15)

NPR: Under S. 1177, the “Education secretary could no longer push for academic standards like the Common Core.”  (NPR; 12/1/15)

Politico: S. 1177 “significantly diminish(es) the power of the education secretary and prevent(s) the federal government from using its money and influence to promote national standards like the Common Core.” (Politico; 11/30/15)

Buzzfeed: Under S. 1177 “States will now get to design their own systems to measure how schools perform.” (Buzzfeed; 11/30/15)

Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. is a physician and Republican member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee serving his third term representing Indiana’s 8th Congressional district. The 8th District of Indiana includes all or parts of Clay, Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Sullivan, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo, and Warrick counties.

USI Women’s Golf signs two for 2016-17

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf announced that two incoming freshmen have signed national letters of intent to compete for the Screaming Eagles next fall. Abbey Leighty (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) and Grace Davis (Valparaiso, Indiana) are set to join USI and Head Coach Lu Anne Howerton in 2016-17.

“I am excited to add Abbey and Grace to our 2016 fall roster,” said Howerton. “They have some pretty big shoes to fill with us losing three of our top four players, but I am confident we are building a great future!”

Abbey Leighty is currently a senior at Mt. Carmel High School in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and is a three-time individual IHSA State Golf Tournament qualifier, finishing third in 2014 and 2015.

“Abbey is consistent and an excellent ball striker,” said Howerton. “She has finished at the top of the leader board in several major tournaments, gaining her the experience she needs to compete at the college level.”

Leighty has been a member of two consecutive Big 8 Conference Championship teams as well as three consecutive IHSA Regional Championships at Mt. Carmel. As a junior golfer, Lighty is a four-time Elks Regional Champion and has multiple Evansville Junior Golf Association victories.

A four-time letter winner at Chesterton High School (Chesterton, Indiana), Grace Davis finished her high school career with a 36th-place finish at the 2015 IHSAA State Tournament as an individual.

“Grace, a long ball hitter, has a great mental game which is hard to find, especially in a freshman.” said Howerton. “Putting together a great work ethic and the willingness to learn, Grace will be a strong addition to the line-up.”

As an individual, Davis finished her senior year with All-Area, All-Conference, and All-State accolades. CHS finished third at the state tournament after winning sectional and regional titles in 2015.

The Eagles resume their 2015-16 this spring.
