STAR WARS Night

IN THE HUNT

After a grueling four games in five days, the IceMen managed four points and are very much alive in the playoff race. Evansville is five points out of the eighth spot in the Western Conference with 41 games left.

ROAD WARRIORS

Evansville is 7-6-0 on the road this season and has won five of its last seven games away from the Ford Center. With only two home games left in the month of January, the IceMen travel nine times including a stretch of six road games in nine days from January 22-30.

“BIG SAVE” BENGTSBERG

Rookie goaltender Christoffer Bengtsberg returned from a 45-day stint on Injured Reserve, and the Stockholm, Sweden native played three out of four games last week. His 34 saves in Evansville’s 3-2 win December 30 at Quad City was a career best, and he made several highlight-reel saves in each of his three starts.

FULL MOON RISING

Alternate Captain Nathan Moon had arguably his best week since returning to the IceMen in a trade with Colorado November 4. Moon notched three goals and two assists in the team’s four games, and scored twice against Wichita Sunday.

GET TO KNOW INDY

The IceMen face the Indy Fuel twice this weekend in Indianapolis, after playing the first five meetings of the season at the Ford Center. Indy won three of the first five meetings and will host the IceMen four times in January and once in March, before the teams wrap up their season series March 12 in Evansville.

CARRUTH BE TOLD

Indy has won three of the first five meetings this season with Evansville, much in part due to the goaltending of Mac Carruth. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect held the IceMen to one goal in Indy’s 3-1 wins October 17 and December 19, and shutout Evansville 3-0 November 4. The IceMen did get to Carruth once, however, a 4-2 Evansville win November 6.

LEASE UPDATE: Evansville IceMen Not Happy With City Contract Proposal

3

On Wednesday, the City provided its best offer on what it is financially willing to do for a new lease. The City said it was up to the IceMen whether or not to accept the City’s proposal. “Not only is the offer far short of what we hoped for, their best offer is actually worse than the current lease. We have been telling the City since February 2015 that we need a better lease. If that is the best the City can offer us there is simply no way we can accept it,” said Geary.

It is the IceMen’s understanding that the City cannot move any further on the financial conditions of the lease terms. The City and the IceMen are several hundred thousand dollars apart on the deal. “The IceMen have been trying to find new ways to bring value to both sides in order to bridge the gap. We have done that by presenting new concepts to the City, including rink naming rights and new ways to bring more bodies into the arena which increases the City’s food and beverage revenue. If the IceMen hadn’t done that, we felt the gap would be insurmountable. It appears those efforts were just not enough,” said Geary. The IceMen will continue to try and find ways to make a lease possible in Evansville, and will explore all avenues to keep the IceMen in this area.

“As I have said before, I’m happy to have invested in the team and in the City, but after spending millions with no return we need a lease that is fair and does not take advantage of us,” said Geary. “I think we have the best fans in the league. I think that is the result of our organization developing a great game day experience. If we can continue that experience in the Ford Center it would be a best case scenario,” Geary added.

Aces Return Home for Loyola and Bradley

Women’s Basketball looking to get back on track in first MVC home weekend

Two individual milestones are within reach this weekend for the University of Evansville women’s basketball team as both Sara Dickey and Sasha Robinson will be looking to continue stamping their names in the Purple Aces history books when both Loyola and Bradley pay a visit to the Ford Center on Friday and Sunday.

Tipoff on Friday against Loyola is scheduled for 7 p.m., and Sunday’s showdown with Bradley is slated for 1 p.m.

Dickey, who has registered double-digit points in 10 of UE’s 13 games this season, enters the weekend with 1,354 career points, which is eight points shy of former player Amy Lefever at No. 5 on the Aces’ all-time scoring list. The junior is averaging 15.6 points per game this season, and she leads the Aces (1-12, 0-2 MVC) in three-pointers with 32 on the year, which accounts for 37.6% of UE’s treys.

Robinson, who made her 2015-16 debut just five games ago, is averaging eight points this season. The Nashville, Ind., native enjoyed one of the best outings of her career a week ago, tying a career high with 17 points in last Friday’s loss to UNI. She is just six rebounds shy of joining the 500 career rebound club.

The duo, which has played in all four meetings between UE and Loyola since the Ramblers joined the Missouri Valley in the 2013-14 season, will be looking to continue the success that has seen the Aces take home three of those contests, including both meetings at the Ford Center.

This season, Loyola has posted a 5-7 record, and they are currently riding a three-game winning streak, picking up road victories at DePaul, Rice and Bradley.

Meanwhile, Bradley is 4-8 on the year and will be taking a four-game losing streak into the weekend. The Braves, who have dropped two of their last three meetings with UE, will play at Southern Illinois on Friday before making the trip to Evansville on Sunday.

Senior is nation’s leading rebounder

BOSTON – Evansville’s Egidijus Mockevicius is the recipient of the Lou Henson award mid-season honors.

The 6-foot-10 senior leads the nation in rebounding (14.5 rpg) and is averaging 17.9 points per game for the Purple Aces.

Mockevicius has posted double-digit rebound totals in all but one game this season. He grabbed 21 rebounds against both Missouri State and Santa Clara. He had 26 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Belmont.

The native of Lithuania has helped Evansville to its best-ever ranking in the Mid-Major Top 25.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in division I college basketball.

The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who coached 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

The recipient of the 2016 award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Award Presentation on April 1 in Houston, site of the men’s division I national championship.
