Viewer tips lead to arrest in theft from Treasure’s resale store

Evansville Police have arrested 42 year old MATTHEW KLEES on a felony theft charge following an investigation that began on January 4th.
Police were notified of a theft of a laptop computer at the Treasure’s resale store in Washington Square Mall. Images of KLEES tampering with the store’s video surveillance equipment just before the theft was released to the public in an effort to identify him.
Several tips were called into the Evansville Police Department identifying KLEES as the man seen in the images. one of the tips was from KLEES’ probation officer who recognized his picture on the local news.
Another tip came in at 4:00pm today that KLEES was at the Barnes and Noble’s book store on S Green River Rd.
KLEES was taken into custody, but refused to speak with a detective.

Be Aware of Common Tax Scams this Tax Season
- Tax season provides the ideal opportunity for scam artists to prey on unsuspecting tax payers. These scams come in many forms, but the most common are described below.
- The most commonly reported tax scam in the Vanderburgh County area involves potential victims receiving phone calls and recorded messages from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The fake IRS agent states this is the “final attempt” to contact the victim regarding a pending lawsuit against them. Potential victims are given a fraudulent number to contact the IRS, where presumably the victim will be asked to wire money or provide a pre-paid debit card number to settle back taxes. These con artists range from amateurish to highly sophisticated. Many posses basic background information concerning their victims and have the ability to “spoof” caller ID’s to make it appear a call is coming from the IRS.
Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “If you have any doubt about the identity of an official who calls you on the phone, get the official’s name, hang up, and then call the agency back at a phone number you know to be correct.”
As anyone with an email account undoubtedly knows, the internet is a never ending source for fraudulent solicitations. Fake emails from the IRS (which often include a link to a fraudulent IRS web site) will direct the victim to “update your IRS e-file immediately.†The emails often look realistic and contain “gov” designations within the email in order to bolster credibility.
On their offical website, the IRS reminds taxpayers that the agency will never:
1) Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
2) Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
3) Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
4) Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
5) Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Former USI runners to run in Olympic Trials
Former University of Southern Indiana Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field standouts Jesse Davis ’06 (Bloomington, Indiana) and Dustin Emerick ’12 (Elmwood, Illinois) have qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon February 13 in Los Angeles.
Davis, an All-American in the indoor 800 meters in 2006, earned his spot in the Olympic Trials with a “B†standard mark of 2 hours, 18 minutes at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon in November.
A combined 10-time All-Great Lakes Valley Conference performer on the cross country course and on the track, Davis won three GLVC Indoor Track & Field titles as well as one GLVC Outdoor Track & Field championship.
Davis graduated cum laude from USI with a bachelor’s degree in history in 2006. He also was the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for track & field in 2006.
Emerick, a four-time All-American in cross country and track at USI, punched his ticket to the Olympic Trials when he posted a “B†standard qualifying time of 1:04:17 at the Anthem Richmond Half Marathon in November
During his career at USI, Emerick broke USI and GLVC Hall of Famer Elly Rono’s 13-year old school record in the 10,000 meters as a junior in 2011.
A combined 12-time All-GLVC honoree, Emerick was the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Midwest Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012. He won seven GLVC titles in indoor and outdoor track & field and was a combined seven-time All-Midwest Region honoree.
Emerick graduated from USI in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He was a two-time Academic All-GLVC honoree as well as the 2012 USI Male Student Athlete of the Year.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball returns to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center this week to play the top teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division. The Screaming Eagles (12-2, 4-0 GLVC) host Quincy University, currently second in the GLVC West, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before finishing with Truman State University, first in the GLVC West, Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
Following this week’s action at the PAC, the Eagles resume play against the GLVC’s East Division, traveling to ninth-ranked Bellarmine University Monday in Louisville, Kentucky. Tip-off at Knights Hall is slated for 7 p.m. (CST). The USI-Bellarmine contest is the start of three-straight on the road for the Eagles.

USI appears in for NCAA II Media Poll. USI was ranked 15th in the D2SIDA NCAA II Media Top 25, marking the first ranking of the year for the Screaming Eagles. This week’s ranking is the first time the Eagles have appeared in a top 25 poll since March of 2014.
Eagles win 7th & 8th-straight on the road. USI ran its season-best winning streak to eight-straight after GLVC-road victories over Rockhurst University and William Jewell College. Junior guard Jeril Taylor led USI with 24.0 points per game, including a 32-point game versus WJC, while senior George Edwards followed with 13.5 points per contest, including a team-best 19 points versus Rockhurst.
During the winning streak.  USI is outscoring its opponents 88.0-65.1 per game during the winning streak, compared to 90.7-87.8 in the first six games. The Eagles also are shooting 51.4 percent (253-492) from the field in the last eight contests, surpassing the 50 percent mark in six of the eight outings.
Four in double-digits to start the year.  USI has four players averaging in double-digit to start the 2015-16 campaign. Junior guard Jeril Taylor and freshman guard Alex Stein are currently on top of the USI scoring column with 17.4 and 14.3 points per game, respectively, while senior forward George Edwards is third with 13.6 points per contest and junior guard Bobo Drummond rounds out the double-digit scorers with 11.6 points per outing.
Seniour leads the GLVC from long range. Senior forward Shane Seniour enters this week as the GLVC and USI leader in three-point field goal percentage. He found the touch from long range this year, hitting 14-of-24 three-point field goals (58.3 percent) after missing all three attempts last year.
At home in 2015-16. The Eagles are 7-1 at the Physical Activities Center this year and are outscoring the opposition, 92.9-75.4, and outrebounding the visitors, 41.6-31.6. Junior guard Jeril Taylor and senior forward George Edwards lead USI with 17.8 and 14.4 points per game, respectively.
USI vs. Quincy. USI leads the all-time series with Quincy University, 29-9, and has a 10-2 advantage in the games at the PAC. The Eagles took last year’s match-up 68-62 at the PAC and were led by junior guard Bobo Drummond with 18 points.
Quincy in 2015-16. The Hawks of Quincy are 10-4 through the first two months of the season, 4-1 in the GLVC, and follow USI in the points column with 85.8 points per contest. Quincy, which is second in the GLVC West Division, has won its last five games and 10 of the last 11 after going 0-3 to start the year. More on Quincy can be found at QUHawks.com.
USI vs. Truman State. USI leads the all-time series with Truman State University, 2-1, after posting an 81-70 victory at the PAC last year. The Eagles were led in the first meeting at the PAC by junior guardBobo Drummond with 23 points.
Truman State in 2015-16. The Bulldogs of Truman State, who visit Bellarmine Thursday before visiting USI, are 12-3 overall this year, 4-1 in the GLVC, and have won their last eight games. USI vs. Bellarmine. USI leads the all-time series with Bellarmine, 49-36, and has an 8-6 advantage in the games at Knights Hall since 2000. The Eagles lost both meeting with the Knights last year, falling 83-70 at the PAC and 67-54 in Knights Hall.
Bellarmine in 2015-16. The ninth-ranked Knights of Bellarmine, who host Truman State Thursday and Quincy on Saturday before welcoming the Eagles, are 11-2 overall, 4-0 in the GLVC. Bellarmine enters the week with an eight-game winning streak and is the defending NCAA II Midwest Region champion. Wednesday the Evansville IceMen meet the Rapid City Rush for the first time since March 17, 2012 when the two teams were part of the old Central Hockey League. The two teams did not meet last year during Rapid City’s inaugural ECHL season, and meet once more at the Ford Center February 6.
WESTERN LOG JAM
Only five points separate fifth place from 11th place in the current Western Conference Standings. Both Evansville and Rapid City are chasing the pack as the teams approach the halfway point of the ECHL season. The Rush sit in ninth, one point behind the Indy, while the IceMen trail the Fuel by six points in the playoff race.
WELCOME BACK, HOBBS
Forward Danny Hobbs rejoined the IceMen last weekend, after starting the season in the AHL with Binghamton. The Shawville, Quebec native played in 17 games for Evansville last season, and scored two goals in his first game back in an IceMen jersey Friday at Indy.
RAPID MELEE
The Rush made national news to start off the New Year, when Rapid City hosted Tulsa January 2. The two teams combined for 216 penalty minutes when the game ended in a melee which resulted in five suspensions. The Rush will be without Garrett Clarke and Jonathan Narbonne for Wednesday, as both players were suspended five games for their actions in the fight. It was the most penalty minutes in an ECHL game since January 2012.
