ICYMI: Bucshon, Congress backs court challenge to Obama’s climate plan

(WASHINGTON, DC) –This week, Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. and 204 members of Congress filed an amicus brief supporting petitions filed by 27 states, including Indiana, seeking to overturn the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan. 

The Associated Press reported, “A brief filed Tuesday with the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington argues that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency overstepped its legal authority and defied the will of Congress by regulating carbon dioxide emissions.”

After joining the amicus brief, Bucshon stated, “Congress has repeatedly tried to overturn these regulations through legislation; however, the President and his allies continue blocking our legislative efforts in order to protect their ideological climate change agenda. Now we’re taking the fight to the courts because we believe the way forward is through innovation and technology advancements, not unlawful federal regulations that cannot be met, damage the economy, and cost jobs. I’m proud to help file this amicus brief, in support of states like Indiana, requesting that the D.C. Circuit Court vacate these regulations that have been temporarily blocked by the Supreme Court.”

Indiana State Police Participating in the ICJI March Enforcement Campaign.

Indiana Statewide– The Indiana State Police announced today they will join over 250 other Indiana law enforcement agencies to increase education and enforcement around dangerous and impaired driving. From March 4 through March 27, 2016, state troopers, county deputies and city police officers all across Indiana will conduct high-visibility patrols specifically designated to identify and intercept those driving aggressively and under the influence.

“I enjoy the month of March, with all the great basketball as well as the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, just as much as any other Hoosier,” said Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter. “But I caution anyone thinking of using this, or any other reason, as an excuse for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”  Carter concluded, “Speaking for the state police, nearly all of us, like most of you, have friends and loved ones that will be out on the road driving responsibly.  So if we see people who are driving dangerously; know that we will stop them and if they’re impaired, they will be arrested.”

Increased enforcement during March is a statewide effort supported by federal funding allocated to the Indiana State Police from the Traffic Safety division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).  Over the course of this enforcement campaign the state police will have more than 150 troopers working overtime looking for aggressive or impaired drivers.

According to ICJI, in March 2015 there were 529 alcohol-related crashes across Indiana, resulting in 214 injuries and five fatalities. Additionally, during the same period, crash reports indicate 1,606 collisions occurred due to dangerous driving, resulting in 332 injuries and four fatalities. Dangerous driving includes such factors as “speed too fast for weather conditions,” “driver distracted,” and “driver asleep or fatigued.”

“Keeping our roadways safe is a priority.” said ICJI Executive Director Dave Murtaugh. “Our dedicated officers who patrol our roadways all across the state are the first line of defense. Motorist need to do their part to ensure our roadways are safe by making responsible choices. From watching the basketball tournament action to taking part in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, it’s up to you to be safe and responsible. If you are going to drink, do not drive. It’s that simple.”

Crashes resulting from dangerous and impaired driving are preventable. The ISP and ICJI would like to remind motorists safe driving is as simple as following these easy steps:

 

  • Before the celebration begins, plan a safe way home
  • Do not drive impaired
  • If you do drink, use a taxi, public transportation, ridesharing service or designate a sober friend or family member, and give them your keys
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911
  • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride impaired, take their keys and help make arrangements to get them home safely

First Lady Karen Pence, Indiana’s Bicentennial Ambassador, will unveil a bicentennial quilt commemorating the state’s historic barns. The Indiana Barn Foundation commissioned quilters across the state to create the quilt, which features 92 squares depicting a traditional barn from each Indiana county. Following its unveiling, the quilt will begin a year-long display tour at various venues around the state as part of Indiana’s bicentennial celebration. On Monday, a public unveiling will take place at the Statehouse. Details below.

Leslie Fella has been hired as the new marketing and air service director at Evansville Regional Airport.

Airport officials said that Fella is responsible for various marketing and media outreach activities, including the development and implementation of communication and branding strategies and advertising campaigns and programs, as well as media relations. Fella is also responsible for air service development responsibilities aimed at retaining existing and attracting new air service to Evansville. Fella most recently served as a communications representative at aluminum manufacturer Alcoa in Newburgh, Ind.

“We are very pleased to have Leslie onboard at Evansville Regional Airport,” said Doug Joest, airport executive director. “Her previous work experience and

education has prepared her well for the breadth of responsibilities she assumes at the airport. We are excited about the passion and enthusiasm that she demonstrates and the new dynamics that she brings to the airport team.”

Women’s Tennis to Host UT Martin and Eastern Illinois

  The University of Evansville Women’s Tennis Team (2-7, 0-0 MVC) will see their first home action of the season on Saturday when they host the University of Tennessee Martin at 4:30 p.m. CST and then will follow that up with a match against Eastern Illinois at 7:30 p.m. CST.  Both matches will be played at Tri-State Athletic Club.  The home action will wrap up a stretch of nine straight road matches for the Aces.

Head Coach Jayson Wiseman said, “Our team is very excited to finally get to host some matches on our home courts.  The traveling to play a number of very tough teams has been good to build mental toughness, but to play at home will be a welcome advantage. Despite the home court advantage we will have to be at the top of our game because both of this weekend’s opponents are very tough.  Hopefully we will get a nice crowd out to support us at Tri-State and create a positive home environment for our team”

UE is coming off a weekend where they played four matches in two days.  They saw action against IUPUI, Ball State, Findlay, and Wright State.  The Aces finished the weekend 1-3 with their victory coming over the Oilers of Findlay.  In the match against the Oilers, The Aces were able to win every match with the exception of flight one singles to secure the victory.

Kennedy Craig had a superb showing this past weekend when she was able to grab four wins in four matches for the Aces at flight five singles.  This puts Craig at a record of 6-3 during her current spring campaign.

The Skyhawks from Tennessee Martin come into the match against the Aces with a record of 0-6.  Most recently, they come off a match against East Tennessee State where they were defeated by a score of 4-0.  Eastern Illinois comes in with a record of 4-3 and boast wins over Butler, Western Illinois, St. Francis, and most recently, Chicago State.

The Aces will have some down time after this weekend with their next match coming on March 10th when they head to Macon, GA to take on Mercer.  Their next home match will come on March 13th when they host Southeast Missouri State.

 

Traffic Stop Nets One Pound of Crystal Meth

Gibson County – Last night at approximately 8:30, Trooper Ross Rafferty was patrolling I-69 when he stopped the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck for making an unsafe lane movement near
SR 168. The driver was identified as Clint Meier, 53, of Hazleton.

Trooper Mike Finney and his K-9, Boomer, were nearby and responded to assist. When they arrived Finney’s K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside Meier’s vehicle. Troopers searched the vehicle and found a large Ziploc bag containing 450 grams of crystal methamphetamine. The street value of the crystal meth is approximately $20,000. Meier was arrested and taken to the Gibson County Jail where he is currently being held on bond.
