Veterans Community Alliance Appoints New CEO

0

The Tristate Veterans Community Alliance (TVCA) Board of Directors has appointed Dan Knowles as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2016. Dan is an Army veteran and a West Point graduate who served 7 years on active duty before accepting a brand management position with Procter & Gamble in 1986. He left P&G in 2000 to become chief marketing officer of Reynolds & Reynolds in Dayton. In October 2002, he started his own business consulting firm and has since worked with multi-national and regional companies in pharmaceuticals, healthcare delivery, information technology, construction, and banking as well as serving on several non-profit boards. This appointment is an acceleration of plans previously agreed to formalize the TVCA organizational structure in July 2016. The decision was made in recognition of faster progress than anticipated toward achieving the non-profits’ goals. Board Chairman Maj Gen (ret) Leonard Randolph, Jr. MD said, “Recent feedback from key stakeholders indicated that this was the right time to make this move. As a co-founder, Dan has been instrumental in creating the vision, building the organization, and helping us recruit and align key donors and partners to better serve veterans and their families in the tristate. The progress achieved to date has been extraordinary and has exceeded our very high expectations.” As one of three co-founders, Dan has helped lead development of the TVCA since mid- 2014. Knowles is looking forward to the challenge: “I’m honored to be able to lead such a committed and talented group of people who work so hard to serve those who have sacrificed for our country. Working together with our local partners and supporters, we can make this region a destination for the disciplined, highly skilled, military leaders and families needed to continue growing our community in the coming decade.” The TVCA has been recognized as one of the more promising community-impact organizations for veterans in the country. It helps coordinate access to, and improves the effectiveness of, services provided to veterans of all eras by over 85 tristate organizations in the sectors of Employment, Education, Health/Wellness and Family Services. Key partners include the USO, the local VA, United Way, the Red Cross, Interact for Change, and most of the universities and large employers in the community. With the help of the Cincinnati Reds and Major League Baseball, the TVCA built and opened its unique Veteran InProcessing (VIP) & Welcome Center in mid-July at CityLink in the West End. This facility, and its web-based Veteran & Family Resource Portal (www.tristatevca.org/access), allow the TVCA to connect veterans and their families with other veteran peer mentors and partners proven to provide exceptional services. In the past 5 months, over 130 veterans have received help through the staff at the VIP Center and over 3,000 have visited the website. Aces and Ramblers square off at 8 p.m.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Riding a 13-game home winning streak, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team plays host to Loyola at 8 p.m. in a game that will be carried live on the CBS Sports Network.

A superb defensive effort saw the Purple Aces hold the Redbirds to just 30.7% shooting as UE earned its first win at Redbird Arena since 2011, winning 66-55 on Friday evening.  The Aces are now 5-1 in MVC play and 16-3 overall, it is the first 5-1 league start since 1999 when Evansville won six of its first seven games.

D.J. Balentine hit all 10 free throw attempts on his way to 25 points while Egidijus Mockevicius moved past Jerry Sloan into second on the all-time UE list with 20 rebounds.  UE was outscored by a 33-8 margin in points off turnovers and second-chance points, but the difference came in shooting as UE hit 22 shots in 44 attempts, Illinois State hit one more shot in 31 more tries (23/75).

For the first time since joining the MVC, the Aces have won three games in a row by double figures.  The last time UE won three league games in a row by a double digit margin came in the MCC in 1992-93.  In that streak, UE defeated Loyola (108-70), Detroit (82-58) and La Salle (63-41).

The defending CBI champion Loyola are currently 8-10 on the season and 1-5 in the Valley.  On Saturday at UNI, the Ramblers earned their first league win of the season, taking down the Panthers by a final of 51-41.  Milton Doyle is the top scorer for the Ramblers, checking in at 11.3 points per game; he also leads the team with 60 assists.  Next up is Montel James at 11.1 PPG; James was the leader in the win at UNI, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds and now has a team-best 6.5 caroms per game this season.

Results: Complete | USI Only

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Women’s Track & Field dominated the 3,000 meters and the weight throw in its 2016 Indoor season-opener Saturday at the Little Giant Invitational.

Led by senior Jamie Adkins (Owensboro, Kentucky), the Screaming Eagles landed the top seven finishers in the 3,000 meters. Adkins finished first in the event with a time of 10 minutes, 28.18 seconds. Sophomores Bryce Cutler (Benzonia, Michigan) and Jessica Lincoln (Palatine, Illinois) finished second and third, respectively, while junior Carly Whitesell (Zionsville, Indiana) and freshman Hope Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sophomore thrower Dasia Moore (Indianapolis, Indiana) earned her first career collegiate victory with a first-place showing in the weight throw. Moore, who also was eighth in the shot put, posted a career-best toss of 42 feet, eight inches, to earn the win.

USI went 1-2-3 in the weight throw, with senior Jordan Jones (Bargersville, Indiana) and freshman Hilary Paxson (Liberty Center, Indiana) finishing second and third, respectively.

In total, USI posted two wins and 14 top-five efforts on the day. Sophomores Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) and Jenna Martin (Evansville, Indiana) aided the Eagles with second-place finishes in the mile and the 60-meter hurdles, respectively.

Eagles’ Comeback Bid Comes Up Short

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball could not complete a furious second-half rally as No. 17 Bellarmine University handed the Screaming Eagles a 65-61 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback at Knights Hall Monday evening.

USI (10-5, 3-4 GLVC) trailed 37-18 following a dismal offensive performance in the opening half. The Eagles shot just 28.0 percent from the field in the opening half, including 3-of-19 (.158) throughout the final 16 minutes of the half.

Bellarmine (12-1, 6-1 GLVC), meanwhile, used a 21-6 run throughout the final six minutes of the second period to turn a 16-12 lead into a commanding 19-point edge heading into the intermission. The Knights went 9-of-13 (.692) from the floor during the last six minutes of the first half to build the large lead.

The Knights quickly extended their lead to 21 early in the third quarter, but a 21-point third quarter allowed the Eagles to trim the deficit to 53-39 heading into the final period.

USI carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, where it scored 11 of the first 12 points to cut Bellarmine’s lead to four points with just over seven minutes to play. Junior forward Hannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois), who had a basket to end the third quarter to bring USI’s deficit to 14, scored six points of those 11 points, while sophomore guard/forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) drained a three-pointer.

Bellarmine, however, answered the Eagles’ charge as freshman center Ally Mayhaus scored six straight points to push the Knights’ advantage to 60-50 with just under six minutes to play.

USI made one final charge as a 7-1 spurt, capped off by a three-point play by freshman forward/center Mikayla Rowan (Brazil, Indiana), allowed the Eagles to close the gap to four points in the final minute of the game. Junior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) also had four points during the push.

Bellarmine, however, answered USI point-for-point in the final 30 seconds to hand the Eagles their fourth straight loss.

Turnovers cost the Eagles dearly in the first 20 minutes as USI’s 17 first-half offensive miscues turned into 14 points for Bellarmine. USI cleaned up its offensive performance in the second half, where it had just five turnovers.

Grooms led the Eagles with a game-high tying 16 points and seven rebounds, while Wascher added 14 points and seven rebounds. Marcum and Rowan finished with 10 and nine points, respectively, while sophomore guard Randa Harshbarger (Philo, Illinois) added six points and a game-high seven assists.

Bellarmine benefitted from a strong bench effort as the Eagles’ reserves were outscored 29-6. The Knights were led by junior guard Whitney Hartlage, who had 16 points. Mayhaus had 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.

USI returns to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when it travels to Romeoville, Illinois, to take on No. 8 Lewis University (16-1, 7-0 GLVC). The Eagles complete their three-game road swing Saturday at 1 p.m. when they visit the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (10-5, 4-2 GLVC).
