Evansville Regional Economic Partnership Celebrates 2024 Economic Development Week
Taking place from May 6 – 10, the week recognizes and honors the dedicated work of economic developers and their contributions to communities around the world.
MAY 8, 2024
Evansville, Ind. — The Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) is proud to announce its participation in the 2024 Economic Development Week, a global initiative led by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).
“As the local and regional economies evolve, the economic development profession must remain agile and responsive to change. The expertise of dedicated economic development professionals and organizations is vital in cultivating sustainable growth and prosperity,” said IEDC President & CEO Nathan Ohle. “This year’s Economic Development Week will showcase innovative community leadership driving collaboration and creating opportunities in their communities. I hope our communities and economic developers around the world will join us in celebrating the accomplishments of a profession full of passionate changemakers and community builders.”
The IEDC created Economic Development Week in 2016 to recognize the work that economic development organizations and professionals do in their communities. IEDC celebrates Economic Development Week every year, highlighting the programs, best practices and exceptional individuals that positively impact life in their communities. In just a few years the event has become one of the most widely recognized awareness weeks of its kind validating the, often unheralded, work of the economic development profession.
“Economic Development Week is a crucial time to reflect on our collective achievements and to plan for a future of inclusive and sustainable growth,” said Josh Armstrong, Chief Economic Development Officer at E-REP. “We are inviting businesses, community leaders and the public to join us in celebrating the progress made and to engage in meaningful discussions about the economic future of the Evansville Region.”
This year’s Economic Development Week celebrates the important regional initiatives being facilitated and guided by E-REP that will lead to a brighter and more resilient economic future. We are proud to celebrate this incredible work happening:
- Talent EVV: Our region’s strategic transformation plan, which is all about building quality of life, place, and opportunity E-REP’s work is aligned to support the goals of Talent EVV – grow our population, increase the quantity and quality of available jobs, improve health outcomes, and reduce the number of households living in poverty.
- READI: A program led by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. to foster regional collaboration and incentivize private investment. Through the leadership of the Southwest Indiana Regional Development Authority and E-REP, the Evansville Region has twice been awarded the maximum allocation ($95 million total) to enable projects to attract and retain talent in the Evansville Region.
- Ohio River Vision & Strategic Plan: The first regional effort to plan for the health and vibrancy of our Ohio River frontage – from Mount Vernon to Evansville and Newburgh. The project, led by renowned global design firm Sasaki, focuses on increasing activation and investment in the Evansville Region’s communities, economy, and exceptional quality of place resources. The master plan will be released on May 21, 2024.
- Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy: The Evansville Region is amid efforts to produce a new CEDS in late 2024. This strategy-driven plan for regional economic development will serve as a guide toward becoming more resilient, equitable and competitive. E-REP will use it to apply to become an Economic Development District, a designation the Evansville Region (excluding Henderson, Ky.) has never held.

UE Announces $1 Million Leadership Gift
EVANSVILLE, IND. (05/07/2024) The University of Evansville (UE) is pleased to announce a $1 million leadership gift to establish the Collier Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship fund will provide a four-year $10,000 annual scholarship for undergraduate students at UE.
The gift was provided through the generosity of Reginald (Reg) B. and Lois M. Collier, founders of Research Systems Corporation (RSC). RSC, a television advertising research company rooted in Evansville, employed numerous graduates from UE. Evansville’s business community and charitable organizations were important components of the Collier’s lives providing jobs and infusing philanthropy into the Tri-State community. Reginald passed away in 2004 and Lois in 2013 leaving behind their children, Mark Collier and Brynn Collier Helms, and their four grandchildren.
As a demonstration of the Collier family’s generosity and dedication to educational excellence, the Collier Family Endowed Scholarship will continue to provide for other future Aces, making higher education more accessible and UE even more attractive.
“The University of Evansville is stronger and better because of those who give so selflessly. Today, we celebrate Reginald and Lois Collier, the legacy they built in our community, and the difference they made during their lifetime,” said Abigail Werling, Vice President for University Advancement. “We at UE are also appreciative of their treasure left behind that will have a lasting impact for countless people through the Collier Family Endowed Scholarship.”
The University of Evansville is a private, comprehensive university located in the southwestern region of Indiana. Established in 1854, UE is recognized across the globe for its rich tradition of innovative, academic excellence and vibrant campus community of changemakers.
Home of the Purple Aces, UE offers over 75 majors, 17 Division I sports, and a unique study abroad experience at Harlaxton, the University’s very own Victorian manor located in the countryside of England. For more information, please visit evansville.edu.
EPA Announces ENERGY STAR® NextGen™ Certification for New Homes and Apartments
WASHINGTON—Today, May 7, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officially announced the launch of ENERGY STAR® NextGen™ Certified Homes and Apartments, a voluntary, leading-edge certification program for the nation’s residential new construction sector. Developed with funding from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, ENERGY STAR NextGen will increase national energy and emissions savings by accelerating the building industry’s adoption of advanced, energy-efficient technologies.
“President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is addressing climate challenges head-on and accelerating the adoption of clean, affordable technologies,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “By collaborating with developers and home builders nationwide, ENERGY STAR NextGen is set to act as a catalyst for the construction of new, energy-efficient homes and apartment buildings. Strategic partnerships like this are not just cutting costs for American families and greenhouse gas emissions — they’re paving the way for a clean energy future for current and future generations.”
Building on the 30-year legacy of the EPA’s ENERGY STAR program, the ENERGY STAR NextGen certification will recognize homes and apartments with increased energy efficiency; reduced on-site emissions through heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, electric cooking appliances; and residential electric vehicle charging. Compared to typical code-level construction, homes earning the ENERGY STAR NextGen certification will be 20% more efficient and help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40%–80%.
Across the country, several early adopters have already begun to build to the ENERGY STAR NextGen specification:
- Beazer Homes (Maryland)
- GreenSmith Builders (Minnesota)
- New Tradition Homes (Washington)
- Quantum Equities, LLC (Washington)
- Thrive Home Builders (Colorado)
Additionally, several utilities have announced early incentives for builders to adopt the specification:
- EmPOWER Maryland, including Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco), and Potomac Edison (PE) (Maryland)
- Snohomish County Public Utility District No. 1 (Washington)
- Utah Clean Energy (Utah)
- Xcel Energy (Minnesota)
- Xcel Energy (Colorado)
Energy used in commercial and residential buildings accounts for one-third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. An EPA study last fall estimated that these same buildings have the potential to cut their emissions by up to 63% by 2030 and up to 70% by 2035. By encouraging efficient, electric technologies, the new ENERGY STAR NextGen certification can play an important role in achieving this goal.
Attorney General Todd Rokita and State Rep. Mike Speedy announce advisory opinion clarifying that no laws require use of preferred pronouns
After state Rep. Mike Speedy raised the issue, Attorney General Todd Rokita this week produced an advisory opinion clarifying that neither state nor federal law requires a coworker to use the preferred pronouns and names of fellow employees.
An employer therefore is likely not liable in cases where staff members choose not to use new names and pronouns that are gender-nonconforming, the opinion states — provided that a reasonable person would not find the work environment to be objectively hostile.
“Hoosier businesses should not be burdened with policing employees’ words to make sure their attitudes align with the latest, wokest fads,” Rep. Speedy said. “They face enough needless government regulations without being on the hook for enforcing politically correct views of transgenderism.”
No federal court, Attorney General Rokita said, has found occasional use of non-preferred pronouns alone, even if intentional, to be actionable discrimination or create a hostile work environment.
“Most Hoosiers agree that we all should extend love and compassion toward individuals beset with gender dysphoria,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Treating these individuals with respect, however, does not require us to deny basic truths, as we see them.”
The times call for common sense, Attorney General Rokita added.
“We must oppose the radical agendas of extremists,” Attorney General Rokita said, “who would force us all to march in lockstep with the transanity that dominates so many facets of society, from Hollywood to corporate boardrooms.”
The advisory opinion notes that courts have left unsettled the question of how a pattern of pronoun usage in referring to another person might create a hostile working environment that potentially could give rise to an action under Title VII — which is part of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.
