Women’s tennis announces Spring Fundraiser
Event set for March 5

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –On Saturday, the University of Evansville women’s tennis team will be holding a spring fundraiser at Tri-State Athletic Club in Evansville.
Set for a 6 p.m. start, the team will be hosting an evening of fun, food, prizes, a silent auction and, of course, tennis.
It begins with a short clinic that will be taught by the current Purple Aces players. After that, a round robin tournament will take place with the players being available to assist those playing in the tournament.
Food will be served while prizes and a silent auction will also take place at the event. The cost for entry is $75.

ST. MARY’S HEALTH FOUNDATION TO HOLD 23rd ANNUAL ST. MARY’S WARRICK HOSPITAL GALA AT ROLLING HILLS COUNTRY CLUB
St. Mary’s Health Foundation will hold its 23rd Annual St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital Gala on Friday, April 15th, 2016 at Rolling Hills Country Club. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner, a live dessert auction and the program. This year’s Gala will honor the dedication of St. Mary’s Health in the Warrick County community, which includes St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital, St. Mary’s Epworth Crossing, St. Mary’s Boonville Urgent Care and St. Mary’s Warrick Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Ron Rhodes, Meteorologist at Eyewitness News, will return to emcee this year’s Gala, which will once again feature the unique and popular “Eat It Now! Dessert Auction.â€Â Gala attendees will bid on locally made cakes and desserts to share with guests at their tables. This is one of the few times a cake will sell for a generous $1,000!
The Gala generates impactful investments for St. Mary’s Warrick Healthcare Services, which allow St. Mary’s highly-skilled staff to continue providing exceptional and compassionate care for the Warrick County community, with special emphasis on the poor and vulnerable.

House panel OKs medical malpractice cap increase

Medical malpractice victims would be able to receive more compensation under a measure an Indiana House committee approved Monday that would update the payment cap for the first time in nearly 18 years.
The bill, which passed the Judiciary Committee 11-1, would increase the limit on the amount victims can receive by $400,000, to $1.65 million. It would then gradually increase every four years until 2031 to keep up with inflation, with a final cap of $2.25 million. The bill now heads to the full House for consideration.
“My goal is that we address those in a periodic increase because we the Legislature don’t do a very good job with keeping pace with the cost of living,” Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, said. “I think it’s extremely important that we put periodic increases in it.”
Steele also said the proposal would protect the cap from constitutional challenges that may arise since the cap does not keep pace with inflation.
But the measure was originally the basis of a Senate bill, authored by Steele, which previously died in the Senate. Steele has said he aimed to find a compromise between physicians who are worried about ballooning malpractice insurance costs and lawyers who represent patients injured or killed because of medical mistakes.
The House committee revived the measure Monday after stripping an unrelated bill in a last-ditch effort to shove the proposal forward.
The move came amid objections from medical associations that opposed the cap increase saying doctors would not be able to absorb the costs as their malpractice insurance premiums would also rise. Though most opponents supported the initial $400,000 increase, they largely opposed the continuing increase.
Mary Abernathy, executive director of Medical Education at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, said increased liability costs could also deter students from wanting to become physicians in Indiana.
“A rapid increase would create anxiety in young Hoosiers deciding whether to even train as a physician or even to stay and work in Indiana,” Abernathy said.
But Daniel Ladendorf, legislative chairman for the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, which supports the cap increase, has argued the rising costs are problems best addressed by medical insurance companies, not the patients.
“That’s not the problem of a patient that’s been seriously harmed by a doctor’s negligence,” he said. “That’s a business issue.”

Brzoja and Mockevicius earn MVC awards
Brzoja named 6th Man of the Year, Mockevicius Defensive POY
 ST LOUIS –Two more major Missouri Valley Conference awards will be coming to Evansville as Mislav Brzoja was named the MVC 6thMan of the Year while Egidijus Mockevicius picked up the MVC Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Brzoja becomes the third University of Evansville player to earn Sixth Man of the Year honors, joining Curt Begle (1999) and Ned Cox (2012). He came off the bench to play in all 31 games, seeing an average of 24.1 minutes per game.
One of the top 3-point shooters in the MVC, Brzoja connected on 40.3% of his attempts. His top game of the year came in the exciting win at Southern Illinois as he scored a career-high 25 points. That game saw him drain 9 of his 12 attempts, including 4 of his 5 triples. Those efforts saw UE overcome a late deficit to pick up an important overtime victory.
Mockevicius has been not just one of the top defenders in the Valley, but the nation as a whole. He leads the NCAA with 14.0 rebounds per game and is the ONLY player in the country to average over 10 defensive rebounds per contest. Entering Arch Madness, Mockevicius has hauled in 11.52 defensive caroms per game.
He also sits atop the NCAA with 26 double-doubles in 31 games. He has two more than anyone else and has registered nine in a row. He has recorded 10 or more rebounds in 28 out of 31 contests. Mockevicius’ work has not only been stellar on the glass, he has also performed exceptional in shot blocking.
Averaging 2.84 blocks per game, he leads the MVC and is 8th in the country. He will finish his career second in conference history with his block total while his tally of 1,218 boards is just 29 behind Larry Bird for 4th place in the conference record books. He is the first Evansville player to be named the MVC Defensive Player of the Year.
Both of the honorees and their teammates are working to prepare for Arch Madness as they open up on Friday at 6 p.m. against either Drake or Missouri State.
North Senior Selected for Colts Drum & Bugle Corps
North High School senior Jacob Muller has been selected to perform as a member of the Colt’s Drum & Bugle Corps of Dubuque, Iowa. Muller, a member of the corps brass section (trumpet line), is one of only 150 students selected for the position.
The Colts, named “Iowa’s Ambassadors of Music†by the Governor of Iowa, are an elite nationally-ranked, world-class competitive drum and bugle corps. They performed in the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C.
To be selected, participants undergo a competitive audition process. More than 350 students from as many as 25 states and even overseas auditioned this year. Those chosen are between the ages of 16 and 21 years old.
As a member, Muller will travel with the Colts and perform throughout the summer, beginning Memorial Day weekend and concluding in mid August. The group will be in session more than 70 days and perform over 30 times for an audience estimated to number more than 200,000 people while traveling through 22 states.
Muller will perform with the Colts in Evansville at the Drums on the Ohio DCI event this coming June. Tickets can be ordered at www.dci.com.
The Corps also will participate in the The Drum Corps International World Championship Finals that will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, August 11-13, 2016. The Colts will compete in major shows in Dallas, San Antonio, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Allentown, Penn., among many other locations on the road to Indianapolis.
Muller is the son of Aaron and Regina Muller, also of Evansville and is a student at North High School (class of 2016). He has been a 4-year member of the North Green Brigade marching band and has performed in the EVSC Honors Band, this will be his first year performing with the Colts. After the summer tour ends in mid August, Jacob will be attending Indiana University where he plans to study finance.

About the Colts:
The Colts organization was founded in 1963 and is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. The operating budget for the group is over $950,000 per year, generated through performance fees, fundraising, an active parents group, membership fees and special projects.
The Colts travel with approximately 200 people, including 150 members. A teaching staff, a parent volunteer team and support people such as drivers and seamstresses accompany the members.
The group tours with four motor coaches, two semi trailer trucks, two vans, one supply truck, and a souvenir sales trailer.
The Colts have ranked in the top 25 of all drum corps for the past 32 years, including top-12 international finalist status eight of the past 21 years. There are more than 40 competitive DCI corps in the country.

 Cardboard Arcade Challenge for local students
The Public Education Foundation invites the community to come to this year’s Technology, Innovation & Collaboration Showcase – featuring the Cardboard Arcade Challenge. The event is Thursday March 10, 2016 from 4:30 to 7:00 PM in the Commons area at Ivy Tech Community College and is free and open to the public.
New to the showcase for 2016, the Cardboard Arcade Challenge will be a fun, “hands-on brains-on†competition between student teams to design and build their own arcade games. Cardboard arcade games will be at the showcase to observe and to play.
Students created teams of 3-4 to collaborate with an adult sponsor to create the arcade game before the showcase. The public will try out the arcade games and cast their vote for the People’s Choice award.
