EVANSVILLE CELEBRATES FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF FORD CENTER WITH CARRIE UNDERWOOD CONCERT ON NOVEMBER 11, 2016 CARRIE UNDERWOOD EXTENDS SPECTACULAR TOUR THROUGH FALL 2016.  TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, APRIL 8 AT 10:00 A.M.

Evansville, IN – This November will mark the five year anniversary of Ford Center in downtown Evansville. “This is a grand slam way to celebrate this momentous occasion,” stated Ford Center Executive Director Scott Schoenike. VenuWorks has been working with AEG Live for some time to attract such a prestigious country entertainer as Carrie Underwood for this celebration.

Seven-time Grammy winner and ACM Female Vocalist of the Year nominee Carrie Underwood has just announced The Storyteller Tour- Stories in the Round will extend through the fall including a stop in Evansville, IN. The in-the round arena tour launched to rave reviews in January and has already played sold out shows across the U.S., including a crowd of over 17,000 at Boston’s TD Garden. Carrie recently returned from Europe where she played five shows in five countries, each part of Country to Country Festival (C2C).

“I always love being on the road performing for my fans,” shares Underwood, “but something about this tour feels more magnetic than ever. EVSC to Host Summer Creativity Camp

Technology is what makes the world go round and this summer, students currently in third through sixth grades in Evansville and the surrounding area can take advantage of the EVSC’s Summer Creativity Camp offered at Highland Elementary School.

The week-long camp includes ten different week-long pathways in which students can choose from to enroll. The Highland Creativity Camp is scheduled for June 13-18 from 8 to 11 a.m. each day. Parents will be responsible for transportation. Cost for the camp is $80 to $100, depending on the pathway selected.

  • Beginning Photography
    Students will learn basics of digital photography and photo editing using Apple iPads. We will experiment with composition and various lighting techniques. Student will learn basics in photo editing and enhancements using selection techniques/masks, adjustment layers, and color filters. Students will create and bring home a digital portfolio of their work to show family and friends all the great photos they took during the week.
  • Construction Zone: KEVA Planks and K’NEX
    Students will choose which medieval siege engine to build with KEVA planks and blueprints-catapult, trebuchet, or a wrecking ball. Students will experiment with counterweights, adjust the arm recoil or the height of the flight deck, determine which travels farther (a marshmallow or a piece of macaroni), or turn cranks, a winding drum, or hoist rope to learn lessons on pendulums and the effects of energy and motion.
  • Creation Station
    Your child can experience the feeling of their own DIY projects. We will complete 5 different imaginative projects during this week. We will paint a terracotta pot and plant your own flower, create their name out of cardboard and cover with fabric to make a great wall hanging in their bedroom, and make a piece of art out of melted crayons. Other projects will include a custom t-shirt and a photo/memo board. A good imagination will boost the outcome for their projects, but I will have many ideas for them to duplicate if they get stumped on an idea.
  • Creative Writing
    Students will spend the week strengthening their writing skills while exploring their own lives and the world around them. We will determine why writers write and what great writers do. From personal narratives to poetry to short stories, we will have the opportunity to explore it all! We will also complete an author study and students will have the chance to communicate with a published author. To end the week, our writers will publish their writings in a real book to keep.

    Do you like Minecraft? In this class, we will make a variety of Minecraft decorations. These do-it-yourself projects will be fun to make and be useful to decorate in any way you choose. During the week, we will paint canvas, create Décor Torches, Minecraft Masks, keychains, and desk organizer. At the end of the week, students will take their projects home.
  • Coding is Cool
    Students will learn the basics of coding and programming. We will start with coding a virtual world introducing the concepts of scene setup, camera usage, events, objects, and more. Following this, students will explore coding for robotics application – both drag and drop and Javascript. Students will test their robotics code using Sphero robotic balls. At the end of the week students will have a better understanding of the language programmers use to “talk” to computers. They will leave with video of their virtual world and their Sphero running a maze.
  • Project Palooza
    Boys and girls will push their creativity to the max in this project based session. They will enjoy creating a variety of fun make and take projects. We will be building birdhouses and book ends, creating art using stones, discovering how versatile felt can be, and creating bowls out of balloons and fabric. This session is sure to keep their creative juices flowing. Come join us for a week full of projects, fun, and friends.
  • Stop Motion Animation
    Students will learn the workflow of creating a Stop Motion movie. Students will work individually or in a small group to write a story plot and animate it using an iPad Stop Motion app. Time will be spent storyboarding the scenes, building the scene background, taking LOADS of pictures with the iPad, recording sound effects and editing the movie. Students will enjoy a movie premiere on Friday where they will reveal their Stop Motion film to the class.
  • 3D Printing and Engineering
    Students will get the opportunity to work through the engineering design process while working on their problem solving skills.  Students will be presented with real world problems and create ideas to solve them.  They will then use computers to design solutions.  Did we mention that they will be able to print them on our state of the art 3D printer?  Not only that, but students will have access to 3D scanning, which can allow them to scan and print themselves.

Appellate pleadings, motions will be online within 60 days

The Indiana Supreme Court task force created to look into remote access and privacy of electronic records has decided appellate pleadings and motions filed by attorneys will be put online at mycase.in.gov sometime within the next 60 days.

At its first meeting Feb. 29, the task force decided to put appellate briefs filed by attorneys online April 1, and is moving toward putting most materials online by the end of the year. At its meeting Friday, the task force looked at the accessibility of online court materials in 15 other states, especially the states around Indiana, and determined that the effort is pushing Indiana to the forefront of the nation in terms of accessibility.

“We’ll be one of the most open states in the nation,” Bob Rath, director of Appellate Court Technology, said. “You talk about progress, by the end of this, we’ll be right on the cusp of it.”

Rath said 80 briefs were online as of Friday, and half of those were e-filed. Sixty-three percent of trial court briefs were also online, he said.

Based on Indiana’s survey of what other states are doing, 12 states put court documents online, 10 put pleadings online, 11 post court orders and eight post appellate briefs. Six of 12 had documents available to the general public.

The task force’s concern about putting appellate pleadings and motions online was the same as putting briefs online: revealing too much personal information about the people filing the motions. However, with the process to put documents online established the first time the task force met, this meeting was not as contentious, and the process was ironed out.

Motions were defined as petitions to transfer, petitions to strike, and petitions to remand, consolidate, stay, redact and compel. Judge Paul Mathias of the Indiana Court of Appeals said that court deals with about 5,000 motions a year.

There were discussions about motions to redact and what to do if a motion to redact is put online. That’s one of reasons why Joel Schumm, professor at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, suggested a warning to those who are filing pleadings and motions that this will appear online. He suggested a check box at the end of the process like other check boxes, but there was concern the text would not be read, just checked.

Fred Cate, professor at IU Maurer School of Law, said he liked the idea of a warning, but thought the check box was pointless.

“Let’s rid the world of another check box,” he said. “The world doesn’t need another check box.”

It was decided a warning would be put with filings, but because of these concerns, the motion to put pleadings online May 1 was changed to sometime within the next 60 days so the warning could be added to the process.

The next meeting of the panel will be May 6, when the task force will discuss posting trial court orders and judgments. Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush said the challenge with that will be that Indiana does not have a unified court system, so getting all of the individual courts on the same page might be a challenge.

The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, 

Sexual Assault & Gender Violence”

April 12, 2016 at the University of Southern Indiana

Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” men will literally walk one mile in women’s high heeled shoes on April 12, 2016 on the University of Southern Indiana campus to protest rape, sexual assault & gender violence.  Men, women and children are invited to participate in the Walk planned by Albion Fellows Bacon Center and USI’s Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group. Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding, Mayor of Evansville Lloyd Winnecke, Evansville Police Department Chief Billy Bolin, and other men are going to walk in high-heeled shoes to raise awareness about rape.

Registration for the Walk will begin at 5:00 p.m. at Carter Hall on USI’s campus. After the walk, Wedding, Winnecke, and Bolin will pledge with students and community members to make a difference.

The Walk is organized by Albion Fellows Bacon Center and the University of Southern Indiana Sexual Assault/Gender Violence prevention group and sponsored by a number of USI campus organizations, including Fraternity and Sorority Life of USI, USI Student Government Association SOS Grants, and Student Housing Association of USI.  Community sponsors include Holly’s House, Fraternal Order of Police #73, Boyd Electric and SouthWest Graphix among others.

A woman is raped every 107 seconds in America, totaling about 293,000 victims per year. Albion Fellows Bacon Center provided sexual assault services to 582 primary and secondary victims in 2015. Albion is a domestic and sexual violence agency and serves as the only rape crisis center in the immediate area. UE and Shepard Academy to host Syrian college student speaker series

UE student, Basel AlHaj will be speaking to Shepard Academy students and others at Harrison High School on April 15th at 9:05 am. He will be presenting on Syrian culture, the crisis in the Middle East and the repercussions of Isis and its governments. He will also be explaining his life before and after the governmental social/cultural changes .

Basel is part of UE’s Scholars for Syria (www.scholarsforsyria.com) a group which was formed to help Syrian families, students, and refugees; to promote public awareness of Syrian culture and the present crisis and the needs of the people there and here.
