Aces and Ramblers to play on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Three of the next four games will be on the road as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team marches down the home stretch of the season.  A trip to Chicago gets things started as UE faces Loyola at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon on ESPNU.

Defending CBI champion Loyola enters Sunday’s tilt with a 12-13 mark and are 5-8 in league play.  The Ramblers have played well as of late, winning four of their last six games, including road triumphs over Southern Illinois and Bradley in their last two games.

Montel James leads the way for LUC with 12.6 points per game; he is also their top rebounder with 6.5 caroms per contest.  James came off the bench to pace the Ramblers with 17 points in their win in Peoria; he also hauled in seven rebounds.  Milton Doyle also checks in with double figures, he has notched 11.4 PPG.

“I thought our pitchers came out and did a great job.  They kept us in both games and were able to keep hitters off balance,” UE head coach Mat Mundell said.  “I could not have asked for to better games to open with.  In the first game, we got to go to extra innings and work on playing with pressure.  In the second game, we got ourselves into a hole and had to battle back to get the win.  Both were games we could build off of.”

Game one saw a pair of freshmen play large roles in the win.  Tess Hupe opened her career playing left field as she went 2-5 with a pair of runs scored.  Fellow frosh Morgan Florey picked up the win, pitching the final four innings as the Aces were able to come from behind for the win.

UE right back in action on Sunday at Loyola

Just five days after breaking the all-time University of Evansville scoring mark, D.J. Balentine scored 19 points, but Illinois State was able to hang on for a 70-60 win over the Purple Aces men’s basketball team on Thursday evening at the Ford Center.

Balentine hit six shots and notched four rebounds for UE (19-7, 8-5 MVC) while Egidijus Mockevicius posted another double-double with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  Adam Wing also finished in double figures with 11.

Illinois State (15-11, 9-4 MVC) was led by an 18-point game from Nick Banyard.

Evansville had the hot hand in the early going as D.J. Balentine knocked down a triple to give the Aces an 8-3 lead in the opening five minutes.  Illinois State fought back with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the night at 9-8 and stretched it out to four for the first time at 19-15.

A half that featured eight lead changes saw UE roar back to retake the lead with 4:12 remaining on a Jaylon Brown layup.  A dunk by Mockevicius in the final minute put the Aces up four before they headed to the locker room up 30-29.

Illinois State scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to open up their largest advantage at 39-32.  An and-one by Balentine helped UE get back within two at 39-37, but the Redbirds scored five in a row to go up 44-37.  Their defense held UE to 2-of-11 shooting while forcing four turnovers in the stretch.  Balentine notched another old-fashioned 3-point play to end the drought.

Over the final minutes, the Redbirds added to their lead, going up by 13 with 6:36 to play.  Evansville made it interesting in the final minute, getting within six, but ISU held on for the 10-point win.

Next up for the Aces is a trip to Chicago where they will face off against Loyola.  Game time is 3 p.m. on Sunday in a contest that will be televised on ESPNU.

Hit and Run Pursuit Suspects in Custody

0
The hit and run suspect who fled from a sheriff’s deputy yesterday is now in custody. Mr.Nathan Wayne Barenfanger was arrested by the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office and will soon be transferred to the custody of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest stems from a traffic stop that took place this past Wednesday afternoon in the area of W. Virginia Street near Deaconess Hospital. A Sheriff’s Office sergeant assigned to Joint Drug Task Force observed a speeding black 2005 Chevrolet Malibu and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver failed to stop, fleeing at speeds exceeding 84 mph in a 30 mph zone. The pursuit lasted less than a minute before the pursuing deputy lost sight of the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office was then notified that the suspect vehicle had stuck two cars that were parked at E. Michigan Street and N. Evans Avenue. The driver and his female passenger fled on foot and were able to elude capture. The suspects obtained transportation by approaching an unsuspecting motorist who unwittingly drove them outside the search perimeter while it was still being established by the Sheriff’s Office and the Evansville Police Department.

Evidence recovered from the wrecked vehicle along with information obtained from a witness allowed the Sheriff’s Office to identify Mr. Barenfanger as the driver and Ms. Kayla Dawn (Mangold) Reed as the passenger. Mr. Barenfanger had a suspended license and active felony warrants for forgery, counterfeiting and traffic related offenses at the time he fled. Ms. Reed had multiple felony warrants related to narcotics dealing out of Warrick County.

Acting on information provided by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, this morning the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office located both suspects hiding in the attic of Ms. Reed’s mother’s residence located at 900 S. Yankeetown Road. Ms. Reed reportedly stated that the pair were preparing to flee to Florida.

ARRESTED:

IS IT TRUE FEBRUARY 12, 2016

23

IS IT TRUE  if the City of Evansville’s books and records are so clean according to the Mayor and his City Controller why does it take one year and two months for the people to really know the findings of the State Board of Accounts audit of the City of Evansville?

IS IT TRUE last week Federal IRS agents were at the Civic Center for a couple of days looking at 1099 and W-9 tax forms? …our Civic Center “Moles” tell us that the Federal IRS agents are looking at these forms in an extremely organized manner?  …the Federal IRS agents visit was unscheduled?  …. that IRS Form W-9 (Rev. December 2014) Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification?

IS IT TRUE we heard that an official from the Winnecke administration asked some of his State and Federal political buddies to find out why the Special Agents of the Division of the Office of the Special Inspector General For The Troubled Asset Relief Program are doing an investigations of the spending of TARP Funds in Evansville?

IS IT TRUE we are hearing that officials from the Division of the Office of the Special Inspector General For The Troubled Asset Relief Program are planning to revisit Evansville at the end of this month?

IS IT TRUE that the past Evansville DMD Director  bragged that he was well-connected with City and State officials in Indianapolis? …we wonder if he knows Reggie Walton, the DMD  official who is sentenced to nine years in prison for his alleged  felonious acts as Director of the Capitol City’s Land Bank?

IS IT TRUE investigators of the not-for-profit Evansville Brownfields  Corp will be meeting again with present and former city officials near the end of this month? .. .we understand from a very good source that most of the current officials are using the services of a city paid attorney to protect their interests?  …we have heard that John Friend, Al Lindsey, Dr. Dan Adams and Connie Robinson have not engaged in hiring  legal counsel,?  … they must feel fine about answering questions from investigators without assistance from city paid legal counsel because they have nothing to hide?

IS IT TRUE that we have been impressed with the changes we have seen in the Evansville Courier and Press under it’s newest ownership?  … the  new Courier and Press  are reporting news that is less than flattering to the Winnecke administration and City Council ?

IS IT TRUE we would like to see Brad Byrd do the same kind of interview with Jonathon Weaver that he did with Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley and John Friend CPA when they faced allegations of improper behavior?…We believe that the allegations made by the Courier and Press Editor Tim Elhridge concerning Weaver are as serious as the ones they faced,?  …Missy Mosby stated at last Monday night City Council meeting that that Mr. Elthridge comments about Mr. Weaver were slanderous?  … by Mr. Weaver appearing on the Bryd Byrd show he will  be able to defend the allegations leveled against him by the Courier and Press Editor are incorrect?

IS IT TRUE the way  to  be able to speak at City Council meetings is to ask the City Clerk  to put you down as an “agenda item” ? …if someone is officially on the agenda, there are no restrictions on how much time may be utilized to address the Council, Commission, or Board?   …the Chair of the meeting can decide and govern the speaking time, but in reality there are no legal restrictions on someone addressing the Council, Commission, or Board?

IS IT TRUE  the City Council unanimously agreed that Evansville Brownfields would hold the lease on the downtown hotel?…We wonder about the wisdom of this decision, and wonder why using the non-profit as a “pass through” will serve the cause of transparency?

IS IT TRUE that CCO is doing in-depth research on some questions raised by our posters over the last few days, and will be publishing our findings in the coming days?… That some of these questions are leading us down potentially enlightening paths concerning some new public officials and their questionable connections and claims?

IS IT TRUE  we are asking our readers to “like page and share”  on Facebook and encourage friends and family to do so, as well?

Todays “Readers Poll” question is: DO YOU FEEL THAT GEORGE LUMLEY REQUESTS FOR PAST BROWNFIELD CORP. AUDITS SHOULD HAD BEEN DENIED?

COMMENTS FROM A CCO POSTER ON THE CCO

Attached is a post from Classykvillepolitics we felt worth re-posting
Feb 9, 2016 at 11:54 am

As someone who is very familiar with the Indiana Open Door Law, I will offer the following.

The decision by Miss Mosby to allow someone 10 minutes to talk while limiting comments from the audience is supported by the requirements of the Indiana Open Door Law. Yes, it was a crappy way of handling it, but her methods are within the guidelines.

Let me explain

Since the Indiana Open Door Law has NO requirement that a Council, Commission, or Board accept or allow public comments from citizens, the fact that the City Council has placed that allowance into their meetings is good for us citizens.

The way that Miss Mosby got around that and was able to allow more time (I think some have stated 10 minutes) for John Graybill was exactly what the CCO has pointed out: He was an “agenda item”

As someone who is officially on the agenda, there are no restrictions on how much time may be utilized to address the Council, Commission, or Board. The Chair of the meeting can decide and govern the speaking time, but in reality there are no legal restrictions on someone addressing the Council, Commission, or Board.

By allowing Mr. Graybill to be an “agenda item” instead of a citizen speaking during the “open comment” period, Miss Mosby has managed to get around the 3 minute “open comment” period the City Council has adopted.

Now, don’t be fooled for a minute about the Sneagal on this. The agenda of Council, Commission, or Board is almost always decided by the Chair, which in this case was City Council President Missy Mosby. She allowed Mr. Graybill to be on the official agenda as an “agenda item,” and by doing so she was assured that Mr. Graybill would not be limited to the 3 minute restriction for an “open comment” by a citizen

Also, it is my understanding that an agenda can be changed up to 24 hours before the actual meeting takes place. I’m going to research that. But as long as the final agenda is “posted” for the meeting, which is done by taping it to the outside of Room 301, they can make changes.

Finally, here is my advice to citizens who want to do things “officially” while abiding by the rules: Request to be on the agenda.

By requesting to be on the agenda, you force them to recognize your request, and by doing so you can make it arranged so that you are NOT limited to 3 minutes as an “open comment” item.

However, be advised that agenda items for a Council, Commission, or Board are SOLELY at the discretion of the President or Chair of the meeting. Requesting to address a Council, Commission, or Board is NOT a guarantee of being allowed to speak. I can pretty much promise that for the situation we have seen under Miss Mosby that she will be tight-fisted in controlling who will be placed on the agenda and what they speak about.

But if that happens over and over again, eventually somebody will take notice and consider a complaint to the Indiana Public Access Counselor. Unless the guidelines for being accepted for the agenda to address the City Council are written down in a way that does not discriminate against certain citizens, Miss Mosby and the City Council might have a headache.
