Parr’s walk-off home run gives softball 6-5 win

Aces top Skyhawks in non-conference game

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Chandra Parr hit a walk-off 2-run home run to give the University of Evansville softball team a 6-5 win over UT Martin on Tuesday afternoon at Cooper Stadium.

“I am so proud of how the girls battled back.  Our offense was able to get some timely hits for us today,” UE head coach Mat Mundell said.  “This is a huge win for us as we get ready to head to Bradley this weekend.”

Evansville (13-16) tallied seven hits.  The biggest two were 2-run shots off the bats of Parr and Morgan Florey.  Katie Warrick was the top performer for the Skyhawks (18-15) as she went 2-4 with 3 RBI.

UT Martin got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third as both scored on a Katie Warrick single.  The Skyhawks added to their lead on an Aeron Smith infield single in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Aces offense was able to get on the board as Kristin Koepke led it off with a single to right-center for UE’s first hit of the game.  Following a Morgan Lambert walk, Olivia Cheatham bunted the runs over to second and third.  Michal Luckett came through with a single to left to plate the first run of the game.  Lambert would later score on a UTM error.

Evansville kept the pressure on in the bottom of the sixth as Morgan Florey hit the first home run of her career to give the Aces a 4-3 advantage.  Down to their last strike, the Skyhawks were able to retake the lead on a 2-run single off the bat of Katie Warrick.

Facing the late deficit, the Aces refused to give up.  Courtney Land led the inning off with a single to bring up Parr, who belted her third home run of the season to left-center to finish off the game.  Florey picked up the win for UE, her seventh of the season.

UE takes to the road this weekend with its first conference trip of the season.  The Aces head to Peoria, Ill. for a 3-game set against Bradley on Friday and Saturday.

BREAKING NEWS: Bucshon Refuses Congressional Candidate Richard Moss’ Debate Challenge

Bucshon Refuses Congressional Candidate Richard Moss’ Debate Challenge

Bucshon Ducks the Debate – and the Voters!
More Campaign Tricks by a DC politician

Jasper, IN – the Moss For Congress Campaign received this notice from a Bucshon staffer regarding our invitation to a debate made weeks ago through multiple offices, emails, and phone calls.

From: “Info Bucshon for Congress” <info@bucshonforcongress.com>
Date: Mar 24, 2016 4:18 PM
Subject: Re: Indiana Eighth Congressional District Primary Election Candidate Debate

“Given the late nature of this request, we will not be able to accommodate. The Congressman has a busy schedule next week traveling the district and meeting with constituents. We appreciate you reaching out and hope the Congressman will have an opportunity to speak to your group in the near future. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.”

The only problem with this off-putting response is that multiple attempts to contact the Bucshon campaign were made by phone and email including to his Evansville district office and campaign website going back weeks. And each time our campaign was given the run around, leading up to this final dismissive and patronizing email note from the Bucshon campaign regarding how busy the beloved Congressman is. His schedule indicates that he will be in Evansville the day of the debate meeting with the Vanderburgh County Republicans Women’s Group. He had plenty of advance notice and opportunity to respond but for his own imagined political purposes, chose not to – until this summary, off-handed dismissal.

None of this is unexpected. Bucshon has better things to do. Ensconced in office, enjoying the advantages of incumbency, self-satisfied, smug, secure, well funded, abundant resources, the perks of high office, a large staff and budget, the Congressman has grown complacent and insulated. He doesn’t have to confront his opponent in a debate or meet the constituents other than in controlled, staged settings. He prefers not to pick through the various votes he has taken in nearly six years in Congress that have done enormous damage to the 8th District, Indiana, and the nation. I would understand his hesitation. Friendly Lincoln Day Dinners as keynote speaker without being challenged would be more to his liking.

The contrast with the national level though is striking. Republican Presidential candidates have, for better or worse, submitted to a swarm of debates (perhaps too many) as the country well knows. National candidates known throughout the land appear on major media venues daily. But Indiana’s 8th district Congressman, Larry Bucshon, Republican Party, can’t be bothered. Or, perhaps, he thinks it’s not to his advantage? Or, maybe, he’s afraid?

The Congressman has gone the way of the professional career politician, co-opted by the Republican Establishment, the DC crowd, the Ruling Class that looks down on the “rubes” back home – the conservative base that gets them elected. He went to Washington, received his marching orders from Republican leadership, got in bed with consultants and lobbyists, and fast became another DC guy – cutting deals, growing government, and plundering the country.

But what the Congressman does not seem to realize is that there is a great wave of discontent building throughout the land and here in southwestern Indiana as well. Two outsiders, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, now vie for the Republican nomination for President. The “Establishment” crowd has fallen away: Jeb Bush, Chris Christy, Marco Rubio, and the sanctimonious and self-centered hanger-on John Kasich (who has no chance of winning but stays on anyway for purely selfish reasons). They’ve all been crushed by the discontent and frustration that is roiling the country, the disconnect and anger between the Republican Establishment in Washington and the voters that sent them there. We conservatives, the voters, the American people are tired of a Republican Party that campaigns one way and votes another. That makes promises they have no intentions of keeping. That serves as the Republican Wing of the Democrat Party. We have had it with housebroken, mush Republicans that do what they are told, and vote for more debt, more government, more socialism, more tyranny, while bankrupting future generations – yet still enjoying the perks, power, and prestige of office. A good life. But completely out of touch.

Dr. Bucshon is a liberal Republican. He campaigns like a conservative at home, but votes like a liberal in Washington. Why is that Larry? Because he goes along to get along. Because capitulation and surrender have become a habit. In the meantime the nation teeters on the precipice. We recognize that status quo, establishment politicians like Bucshon can no longer be tolerated for the sake of the nation. We cannot abide the ongoing bankrupting of the country by career types who impose crushing burdens on our children to empower themselves today. Bucshon and other Republicans like him do not have the stomach for the fight that is needed to save the country. I suspect he does not even realize the extent of the peril that confronts us. And so it is time for him and the others to get out of the way and allow others to take up the banner.

Congressman Bucshon has no intention of debating me. He will come up with one lame excuse after another about what a busy guy he is. He will duck the debate. And he will duck the voters, and the issues. Despite claiming to be non-political, just a Doctor who decided to run for office back in 2010, he has become another quintessential member of the ruling class, the Republican Party Establishment – a newly minted DC career politician.

But this election is different. The wave of discontent and anger runs here in Indiana too. Bucshon cannot escape it or hide from it. Excuses will not save him. We will challenge him publically and through proper channels again, just as we did this time. We will give him adequate time to respond to our debate challenge as we did this time. And we will find out if he prefers to duck the voters, the issues, and me once more.

But we will have our “debate” either way. Including this one, scheduled weeks ago. Come join us. It is on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, 630 PM, at the Eykamp Scout Center, 3501 E. Lloyd Expressway, Evansville, IN. Refreshments will be served. Be there. We will take questions from the audience. There will be a debate of sorts, and a discussion – with or without the Congressman.

“Our nation is at the precipice. Time is running out. We cannot afford business as usual or the status quo. Our country is slipping through our fingers. It is time for a change for Indiana’s 8th district. I ask for your vote in the Republican Primary May 3 2016. I will be your conservative champion in Washington. I will not let you down. Thank you.”

BREAKING NEWS: DMD DIRECTOR KELLY COURES FINDS $1.4 MILLION DOLLARS OF DORMANT FEDERAL FUNDS

7
BREAKING NEWS:  DMD DIRECTOR KELLY COURES FINDS $1.4 MILLION DOLLARS OF DORMANT FEDERAL FUNDS.
On Friday of last week DMD Director Kelly Coures ask Council President Missy Mosby to “suspend the rules” at last nights Council meeting because of an alleged time schedule deadline in spending these funds.  In order for City Council to “suspend the rules” they  had to vote 9-0 to do so.  This is why this issue wasn’t brought up for a vote at last nights City Council meeting.
On last Friday afternoon  At-Large City Councilmen Dr. Dan Adams objected to “suspend the rules” on voting on this issue at Monday evening Council meeting because he felt that he didn’t have enough information on what the $1.4 million dollars were going to be spent on.
At next City Council meeting we also can’t wait to see what “Pork Barrel” projects the Mayor and Coures decide to spend our hard earned tax dollars on.
This is a  developing story we shall update you on this story when we get additional information.

OUR OBSERVATIONS OF LAST NIGHTS COUNCIL MEETING

11
TODAYS “READERS FORUM”
Here are some things we have observed about last night’s City Council meeting that we think deserve some discussion.

What do you think about these things?  Tell us what you think about this or anything else. We want to know what is on your mind.

OUR OBSERVATIONS OF LAST NIGHTS COUNCIL MEETING

Council President Missy Mosby make motions while chairing the meeting.  We hear that this may not be permitted under Robert’s Rules of Order.

Mosby provided no opportunity for healthy discussion or respectful disagreement from the public at the end of the meting.

The obvious “RUBBER STAMPED” voting of 9-0 on every issue on the agenda except one.

There was only one dissenting vote cast by a Councilor in last nights Council meeting. That was Connie Robinson , who replied “Nay” to the question about whether or not Evansville should give up its equity in Buckner, and Kennedy Senior Citizens housing in order to get HUD money to update them.  Robinson ascertained that there would no longer be an age limitation on residents of the EHA apartment towers that are now limited to seniors citizens only  Her concern was its possible that I U Medical students could qualify to live in these newly renovated apartments.

Two of the ordinance changes proposed by President Mosby for allowing funds to be transferred between accounts without prior Council approval and the one concerning the public comments on questions before Council were not taken up last night.

Dan McGinn did take time to praise DMD Director Kelly Coures for finding more “lost” money hiding in the DMD coffers. Maybe Coures and City Controller Russ Lloyd should engage in a “job swap” because it looks like Kelly is a lot better finding cash than Russ.

As the meeting closed, Councilwoman Michelle Mercer  told Council that she will be sharing information she learned about the wonderful success of Fort Wayne’s Headwaters Park with City Council and the Mayor. Apparently she feels that the task of selling Robert’s Park to the public has fallen on shoulders  She feels that the plans for Roberts Park should be patterned after Headwaters.

Please tell us what you think about these things or share your thoughts on whatever you’re thinking about in our  todays “Readers’  Forum”.

YESTERYEAR: Ross Theater

1

YESTERYEAR: Ross Theater

The Ross Theater is pictured here in 1993, shortly before it was razed. Debuting with fanfare on Christmas Day in 1949, its construction was prompted by the opening of Ross Center, an adjacent strip mall on Washington Avenue just east of Boeke Road. The plush theater opened with fanfare, featuring a marble foyer, colorful tapestry walls, a curved screen, and even free bottle warmers in the crying room. By the end of its run, the theater had become a bargain-priced movie house, but the original marquee, illuminated by a thousand light bulbs and neon tubing, remained intact.
