FORT WAYNE, IN – The Evansville IceMen saw a 4-0 lead disappear in the final 6:30 of the third period, but Matthew Zay scored an overtime goal to redeem the IceMen Sunday in a 5-4 win over the Fort Wayne Komets.

The IceMen scored early in the first period, when Casey Thrush deflected a shot into the net off of a faceoff win 3:18 into the game. Alex Wideman gave Evansville a 2-0 lead 53 seconds later when his shot fooled Komets goaltender Spencer Martin and trickled into the net. IceMen goalie Christoffer Bengtsberg stopped all seven shots in the frame.

Andrew Harrison beat Martin with a backhander 35 seconds into the second period to make it 3-0. It was Harrison’s third goal in as many games this weekend. Then Tyson Fawcett added his team-leading 21^st goal of the season from the slot at 10:45, which chased Martin from the net for backup Pat Nagle. The IceMen carried the 4-0 lead into the second intermission, as Bengtsberg stopped 20 shots through two periods.

Fort Wayne posted an ECHL season-high 30 shots in the third period and put together a miracle comeback in the final 6:30 of play to force overtime, including three with their goalie pulled for an extra attacker. First, David Friedmann spoiled Bengtsberg’s shutout with a wraparound goal. Then, Brock Montgomery tipped a shot into the net on a late power play to cut the IceMen lead to 4-2.

Kyle Thomas scored from low in the slot out of a goal-mouth scramble with 1:04 left to cut the Komets’ deficit to one. Then Fort Wayne captain Jamie Schaafsma completed the comeback with 15 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Both goalies stopped breakaways in the extra period, and Evansville failed to covert on a power play, but the IceMen got redemption when Zay buried the winning goal with 1:04 left in overtime. Bengtsberg stopped a career-high 48 shots for his tenth win of the season.

The IceMen finish the season next week with three games in Texas on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday against the Allen Americans at 7:05pm each night. The games will be broadcast at www.evansvilleicemen.com and ECHL.TV.

Katterhenry and Camp lead UE

 PEORIA, Ill. – The University of Evansville women’s golf team finished the wind-shortened Bradley Invitational in 9^th place on Sunday at WeaverRidge Golf Club.

Originally scheduled for three rounds, wind halted play in Saturday’s first round.  On Sunday, the squads finished their opening round before playing the final set of 18.

Leading the Purple Aces was Kayla Katterhenry.  Fighting windy conditions for the second day in a row, Katterhenry posted rounds of 85 and 80.  She tied for 27^th place with a 165.

Just one behind her was Maggie Camp.  Her low round came on the first trip of 18 as she notched an 80.  Sunday’s final round saw her card an 86.  The tied for 31^st place.  Maria Pickens was third on the team.  Rounds of 86 and 81 saw her finish the event with a 167.  She tied for 34^th.

Madison Chaney was fourth on the team.  She recorded rounds of 86 and 87 to tie for 49^th with a 173.  Giulia Mallmann was fifth for UE, notching a 174.  Carly Waggoner and Rachel Marchi played as individuals.  Waggoner posted scores of 89 and 83 to finish in a tie for 46^th with a 172 while Marchi totaled a 188 in her two rounds.

Bradley swept the individual and team championships.  The Braves finished with 614 strokes in two rounds, topping Loyola by 28 strokes.  Danielle Lemek of BU was medalist as her rounds of 71 and 76 put her four shots ahead of teammate Jenna Roadley.  Evansville came home in 9^th place with a final of 669.  They were just two shots behind Illinois-Chicago.

Next Sunday, UE heads to Terre Haute for the Indiana State Invitational.  It will take place on Sunday and Monday at the Terre Haute Country Club.

The University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team defeated the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 8-1, Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute, Indiana for their sixth straight victory. The 45^th-ranked Screaming Eagles move to 11-3 (1-0) on the year in their final non-conference match.

The Eagles continue to dominate doubles play sweeping the competition during the team’s six-match win streak. Junior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia) and freshman James Hardiman (Blackwell Bristol, United Kingdom) move to 8-0 on the year with their win while the senior team of Jack Joyce (Bournemouth, England) and Joel Stern (Mjoelby, Sweden) have won all seven of their matches in 2015-16. Junior Paul Forichon (Nimes, France) and sophomore Samuel Kiladejo (London, England) won their sixth straight match together moving to 7-1 on the season.

Sophomore Anthony Van Rompay (Schilde, Belgium) was able to seal the USI victory with the fifth win of the contest earning a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number-five singles. Joyce picked up his seventh straight win and moved to 14-3 on the year with his 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 win at number-two. Also continuing his impressive singles win streak, Hardiman earned his fifth victory in a row at number-three by a score of 6-2, 6-2 for the final Eagles’ victory of the match.

The Eagles return to conference play on Friday when McKendree University makes the trip to Evansville for a 2 p.m. match up at the USI Tennis Courts.

All five Aces players notch a 76 or lower

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A great all-around team effort saw the University of Evansville men’s golf team jump into fifth place in the final round of the Hoosier Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

All five Purple Aces golfers finished with rounds of 76 or lower to make the jump into the top five.

Leading the way once again was Rick Voyvodic, who notched another 73 to finish in a tie for 11^th with a final score of 146.  Tyler Gray matched Voyvodic’s effort, recording a 73 of his own.  He tied for 16^th with a 148.

Wil Pahud carded the low round of the day for the squad, notching a 72.  He tied for 21^st with a 149.  Will Knights finished the second round with a 75 and tied for 36^th place while Joseph Addante notched a 76 and finished the event with a 160.

Western Illinois clinched the team win by seven shots over Illinois State.  The Leatherneck notched a 578 while the Redbirds finished with a 585.  Evansville’s rally saw them take 5^th place with a 596, six behind Ohio U., who finished fourth.

On the individual side, there was a five-way tie for the win as Peyton White (Ohio), Lyle Burns (Bradley), Jake Brown (Indiana), Zach Burry (Illinois State) and Trent Wallace (Illinois State) each had scores of 142.

The guys will be back in action on April 11 and 12 at the Tennessee State Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.

Sophomore Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) finished first out of 104 runners in the 5,000 meters Friday night to lead the University of Southern Indiana women’s track & field team to a 13^th-place finish at the Washington University Invitational.

Roberts broke Heather Cooksey’s 11-year old school record (16:32.97) in the event with her time of 16 minutes, 31.17 seconds. Roberts’ time ranks first, nationally, and was less than six seconds off an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time.

Joining Roberts with an NCAA II provisional qualifying time was senior Jessica Reeves (Midland, Michigan). Reeves finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:09.86.

The Screaming Eagles, who finished 13^th as a team with 13 points, return to action April 14-16 when they compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, and the SIU Edwardsville Gateway Invitational in Edwardsville, Illinois.
