Three homers not enough in Aces loss at Dallas Baptist

0

DALLAS, Texas – Two three-run blasts in the top of the second put the University of Evansville baseball team on the front foot early, but it would only prove temporary as Dallas Baptist scored all but two of the ensuing frames to pick up a 12-8 victory over the Purple Aces on Sunday at Horner Ballpark.

“We didn’t have a great weekend on the mound, and we just didn’t have the kind of performances that we needed to succeed,” UE head coach Wes Carroll said. “I was very proud of our effort at the plate today. We had quality at-bats, with eight runs with 11 hits, that is usually good enough for a win.”

The loss secured a series sweep for DBU as the Patriots improved to 32-14, including an 11-3 mark in conference play. UE dropped to 25-21 and 7-8, respectively.

The Aces hopped on Patriots starter Jordan Martinson in the second as Jeff Christen opened the scoring with his second homer of the year to make it 3-0, and Trey Hair followed up later in the frame with his second homer of the weekend to make it 6-0.

However, the Patriots would respond with nine runs over the next four innings to go ahead for good.

UE cut the deficit back to two with a Josh Jyawook double in the seventh, but it would be wiped out almost immediately with a Trooper Reynolds single in the ensuing half-inning, and Darick Hall added to the advantage with a towering two-run shot to right to make it 12-7.

Shain Showers followed up with a solo homer in the eighth to round out the game’s scoring.

The Aces finished the day with 11 hits in the contest, and Alex Weigand was dealt his first loss in conference play after allowing six runs over the opening 3.2 innings.

Meanwhile, David Martinelli led the way for DBU, coming up a homer short of the cycle with a pair of walks, and Dalton Higgins was lights out on the mound for the Patriots, allowing four hits over 5.1 innings of relief to improve to 6-3 on the year.

UE will be back in action later this week as the Aces will play host to Austin Peay on Wednesday.

NOTES: Sunday marked the fifth time this season that the Aces have hit at least three homers … All but one UE hitter this season has logged a home run … The last time 12 different UE players registered a homer was during the 2001 season. … This weekend marked the 14th, 15th and 16th meetings between the Patriots and the Aces … Dating back to 1978, the first year that UE participated in Division I baseball, UE is 5-11 versus Dallas Baptist … Last season, the Aces dropped two out of three to the Patriots in Evansville … UE last visited DBU in 2014, winning a pair of games at Horner Ballpark on the way to hoisting a conference title … Since 1978, the Aces are 7-16 all-time against opponents from the state of Texas.

VISIT POSEY COUNTY INDIANA

Take your iPhone or laptop and go to www.visitposeycounty.com. This new website was launched May 05, 2016. Mike Webster designed and developed the site with the input from a knowledgeable committee of seven community volunteers. Mike also took many of the marvelous photographs which appear throughout the site.

Mike along with Posey County businessman and owner of New Harmony Soap Company, Jim Spann, and Connie Weinzapfel who is the Director of Historic New Harmony, introduced the site at a reception held in the New Harmony Atheneum. The Red Geranium Restaurant hosted the event.

Posey County’s Board of Commissioners and County Council enacted an Innkeepers Tax in July 2014. The 5% tax has already raised over $170,000 to promote tourism in Posey County. Some of those monies were used to develop the new website.

According to Jim Spann the Committee’s goal was to promote tourism in Posey County by having readily available Internet information that shows the whole county in depth. If you pull up the site and click on any of the topics, you will find the Committee has succeeded. Take lodging for example. If tourists are looking for hotel lodging, they can click on places to stay, then hotels. The Cox family Four Seasons Motel in Mt. Vernon is one of the businesses that comes up with a full description and photographs.

Should tourists be looking for a bed and breakfast, a family could find Cook’s on Brewery Bed & Breakfast in New Harmony. Many places to stay throughout the county are easy to find. With full descriptions and many links to the businesses’ own websites there is no need for guesswork.

Even those of us who are privileged to live in Posey County will be overwhelmed with the number of places to eat and the variety of fare. Brain sandwiches at New Harmony’s Yellow Tavern or, soon, locally brewed beer at Sara’s Bistro and Wine Bar less than a block from The Yellow. Perhaps one might want a homemade ice cream creation at Bliss in Mt. Vernon or homemade pie at the Depot Diner in Griffin. Of course, Posey County’s German heritage is found from Weinzapfel’s Tavern in St. Philip to the Silver Bell in St. Wendell. One can even find Cajun cuisine at the Red Wagon in Poseyville.

There is a comprehensive, countywide events calendar and maps are provided to locate each event. It is surprising and exciting to see the numerous and diverse activities available each month of the year in Posey County.

Posey County’s unique and fascinating history is showcased throughout the website. One could easily write a report or even a newspaper colu

Aces fall to the Patriots

DALLAS, Texas – Matt Jones became the 12th Aces hitter of the season to log a home run, but it was too late for the University of Evansville baseball team on Saturday as the team dropped a 12-2 contest to Dallas Baptist at Horner Ballpark.

A four-run first inning set the tone for the hosts as a Jameson Hannah two-run blast highlighted the frame, and DBU (31-14, 10-3 Missouri Valley Conference) went on to add runs in both the second and third before adding four more in the fourth.

Brent Jurceka was given his first career start in the contest for UE (25-20, 7-7 MVC), and he was dealt his third loss of the season as he was pegged with 10 runs allowed (nine earned) over the opening four innings.

Following another DBU score in the sixth, Jones sent a towering pinch-hit homer over the fence in left field to cut the deficit to nine, but doubles from Austin Listi and Matt Duce re-established the 10 run lead for the Patriots to bring the game to an end in the bottom half of the seventh.

UE will return to action on Sunday as the Aces are set to square off against DBU at 1 p.m.

The 26th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The Greyhounds took the opener, 12-2, while the Screaming Eagles picked up the win in game two, 8-4.

USI sees its record go to 33-17 overall and 20-8 in the GLVC, while UIndy finishes the regular season, 32-18 overall, 17-11 GLVC. The Eagles, who have won nine of their last 10 games after having an eight-game winning streak snapped in the opener, will be the number seed from the GLVC East Division in the GLVC Tournament, which is slated for May 12-15 at Grand Park.

The GLVC Tournament pairing will be announced Sunday evening after the rest of the conference schedule is completed tomorrow.

Indiana Office of Technology and Indiana State Police Warn Public about “Phishing” Scams

0

The Indiana Information Sharing and Analysis Center (IN-ISAC) — a joint effort of the Indiana State Police, Indiana Office of Technology, the Indiana Fusion Center and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security — was established in Fall 2015 to help further secure state government from cyber threats and to help educate the public about cybersecurity.

Here are some tips about phishing. For more cybersecurity tips, visit http://cybersecurity.IN.gov.

Beware of phishing attempts

All Hoosiers must be careful not to fall victim to phishing, a particularly misleading and dangerous type of spam. Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is the illicit attempt by criminals to obtain personal information. Phishing may occur by email, on Internet sites or over the phone by real people or robotic calls.

Phishing messages generally have the following characteristics:

  • They are unsolicited.
  • They contain an urgent request for personal financial information.
  • To entice a response, they frequently contain exciting or upsetting statements.
  • They will purport to be from a legitimate business (banks, PayPal, e-Bay, etc.)
  • They are generally not personalized, though they can be.
  • You may be directed to fill out a form in the email, go to a linked website or call a telephone number.
  • The sender will eventually seek some or all of the following:
    1. Name
    2. Address
    3. Date of birth
    4. Bank account or credit card information
    5. Social security number
    6. Login IDs and passwords

The phisher’s goal is to fraudulently gain your information and use it for personal gain. The number and sophistication of phishing scams sent out to consumers are increasing rapidly. While online banking and e-commerce are safe, consumers as a general rule must be careful about giving out personal financial information over the Internet or by telephone.

What should I do if I receive a “phishing” message?

Most legitimate businesses will not solicit such information through email. If you believe it is legitimate, call a customer service number (not one listed in the email) or type the legitimate company URL directly into the address line (do not cut and paste from the email).

The site below can be referenced to see if the message you have received is part of a phishing attack. Failing to find your particular message on any list does not make it legitimate!

Phishing techniques designed to trick recipients

To lure people into responding, phishers try to use:

  • Realistic looking and sounding messages
  • Effective use of legitimate company logos in counterfeit messages
  • Parts of legitimate company names in phony URLs
  • Redirected links making it appear as if a legitimate address is being accessed when actually the victim is being routed to a phony imitation of the legitimate entity
  • Phone systems used as part of scams to gather confidential information instead of an electronic form
  • Fake yellow security lock graphics. Typically, double-clicking on the lock displays the security certificate
  • Spoofing or forging https:// in the URL to give the appearance of a secure site
