As a Democrat, I am encouraged by the caliber of young candidates that the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party is attracting. The divisiveness of the Republican controlled State House has not gone unnoticed by hard working residents and it’s time for Indiana citizens to make a change from top to bottom at the state level.

It is a shame that three of our best and brightest young guns are running in Tuesday’s Primary Election for the same seat, Indiana House District 77. Ryan Hatfield has Democratic political blood running in his veins, and has an impressive resume. Brandon Lee Ferguson, a great example to other young leaders, is working his way up the ladder in his chosen field, and sincere in his wish to do right by his peers.

That being said, we have to make a choice. I have come to the conclusion that Lori Sherman is the strongest in a field of these strong candidates. After speaking with her and listening to her goals it is apparent she has the greatest vision for the citizens of District 77. She will bring the same intelligence, fortitude and problem solving to Indiana that she has already used when she overcame obstacles that has defeated many young people. She has lead by example starting in her early childhood. Hard work and intelligence allowed her to come from being an emancipated sixteen year old to an honors graduate from both high school and college. She won a number of scholarship offers to law schools, but chose to return to Indiana’s Maurer School of Law in Bloomington. After graduating law school and passing the bar exam, she turned down several offers in bigger cities to come home to Evansville and give back to the community that she loves.

She started by advocating for children as an attorney for the Department of Child Services. She bought a house in the center of the city and transformed it into a charming bungalow that she proudly calls her home. I can’t imagine a better person to represent District 77.  Lori has proven herself time and time again and has led by example with her actions and accomplishments and now offers those skills and commitment to the residents of Indiana.

Eagles Advance to Semifinals of GLVC Tournament

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The No. 39 University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team defeated Rockhurst University, 5-0, in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Friday afternoon.
USI (16-4) took a commanding 3-0 lead into singles play after sweeping doubles competition. Junior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia) and reigning GLVC Player of the Week James Hardiman (Blackwell Bristol, United Kingdom) earned the first win with an 8-3 score. It is the duo’s 14th-consecutive win, which is good enough to tie for second all-time in the USI record book.

Sophomore Samuel Kiladejo (London, England) and junior Paul Forichon (Nimes, France) earned an 8-6 win. Sending the Eagles into singles play with a 3-0 lead, the senior tandem of Jack Joyce (Bournemouth, England) and Joel Stern (Mjoelby, Sweden) picked up a tough 9-8 (4-0) victory.

Barris earned a quick, 6-1, 6-3, singles victory over Joe Ibarra of Rockhurst at number-six. Sealing the opening round victory for USI was Joyce. The senior picked up the victory at number-two by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

USI is making their eighth-consecutive appearance in the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament. For the third straight year, the Eagles defeated Rockhurst to open the conference tournament.

The Eagles return to action Saturday at 9 a.m. when they take on No. 41 Drury University in the semifinals. Drury defeated McKendree University, 5-3, in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Teen Drivers Sharpen their Skills at this Year’s Rule the Road

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) conducted a teen driver safety event called “Rule the Road” on Thursday, April 28, 2016 .  The event will be held at the Sgt. James W. Harlan Reserve Center located at 2900 E. Division Street. Although registration for this event is now closed, the news media is invited to attend.

Taught by certified emergency vehicle operators from the Sheriff’s Office and the Evansville Police Department, Rule the Road provides teen drivers with exposure to experiences not traditionally covered in driver education courses. These valuable hands-on driving lessons offer teens the chance to practice lifesaving skills on a series of closed courses set up at Roberts Park. Skills and topics covered will include: controlled skidding, controlled braking, collision avoidance, the dangers of texting behind the wheel, and the seriousness of impaired driving. Two computerized driving simulators will allow students to practice crash avoidance skills. A representative from AT&T will be on hand with “It Can Wait” virtual reality goggles for the students to wear.

“Nationally, traffic fatalities claim more teenage lives each year than any other cause of death,” Sheriff Dave Wedding stated. “Young drivers are simply not as experienced and are less able to cope with the unexpected. Add to the mix a smart phone, loud stereo and a car load of friends and it’s not hard to imagine why crash statistics for underage drivers are so dismal,” Sheriff Wedding added, “Driver training like ‘Rule the Road’ is a great way for us to make a potentially lifesaving impression on young drivers.”

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the full-time staff and soldiers assigned to the Sgt. James W. Harlan Reserve Center for making their facility available to us. The center is the home of the 380th Quartermaster Battalion, along with several other Army Reserve Units.

EVENT TO FOCUS ON CONNECTING BUSINESSES WITH OPPORTUNITIES

Goal to connect small and diverse businesses with larger corporations, bidding opportunities

The Southwest Indiana Chamber Diverse Business Alliance will host an event to facilitate connections between small and diverse businesses and larger corporations. The event is designed to build awareness of immediate and future opportunities for small and diverse businesses to bid on projects, particularly in the construction field.

Companies in attendance include Tropicana, Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation, Evansville Regional Airport, the City of Evansville, Regional Cities Initiative project partners, and more.

The event will take place at Tropicana Conference Center on from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 28.

  Dr. Bucshon Votes to Protect Email User Privacy Rights

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – This week, Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. voted for legislation that updates the decades-old federal law governing the collection of electronic communications data to protect Americans’ privacy and improve public safety.  H.R. 699, the Email Privacy Act, passed the House 409 to 0.

“Believe it or not, the laws governing electronic communications have not been updated since 1986 – long before email became a common form of communication.  That’s six years before the first text message and twelve years before Google,” said Bucshon.  “As a result, certain government bureaucrats have the legal authority to access private emails and other electronic communications without obtaining a warrant. This is a clear violation of privacy and a violation of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution.  I’m happy to be a part of this effort to update this law and protect the privacy of Hoosiers.” 

BACKGROUND:

Nearly 30 years ago, Congress passed the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986 to create a system to protect the privacy rights of customers and subscribers of computer network service providers and govern requests to obtain stored content, records, or other information, including stored emails, text or instant messages, documents, videos, or sound recordings stored in the cloud. ECPA applies not only to federal criminal investigations and prosecutions, but to state and local investigations and prosecutions, public safety requests, and civil investigations in which stored communications of these types of information are sought.

There is broad consensus that ECPA is outdated and contains insufficient protections for Americans’ privacy.  The Email Privacy Act, sponsored by Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.), modernizes ECPA to protect Americans’ privacy and provide government officials with tools needed for its investigations.

Why the Email Privacy Act is important:

·         Last year, more than 232 million Americans sent an email at least once per month.

·         More than 207 million Americans use a smartphone, including 85 percent of Americans ages 18-29.

·         Americans send more than one billion text messages each year.
