Adopt A Pet

Kit Kat is up for adoption at the Vanderburgh Humane Society! She’s a female “torbie” who is about 3 years old. She’s waited on a home for several months because she arrived at VHS with a large, raw burn wound on her flank. She spent weeks wearing a “Cone of Shame” and potential adopters never gave her a second glance. Now, she’s all healed up and living large in the Cageless Cat Lounge! Kit Kat likes other cats and LOVES  the laser pointer. She can go home TODAY spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and FeLV/FIV tested for only $30! Call (812) 426-2563 or visit www.vhslifesaver.org for adoption details!

Indiana Attracts Connecticut-Based Pet Food Manufacturer, 150+ Hoosier Jobs

0

Indianapolis – Blue Buffalo Pet Products (NASDAQ: BUFF), the nation’s leading producer of natural pet foods, announced plans today to establish a new manufacturing facility for its wholly-owned subsidiary Heartland Pet Food in Richmond, creating up to 165 new jobs in Indiana.

“I’m excited to welcome Blue Buffalo to Indiana, which is home to the highest concentration of manufacturing jobs in the nation,” said Governor Mike Pence. “As the best state in the Midwest for business, Indiana offers low costs and taxes, reduced corporate regulations and a skilled Hoosier workforce. Manufacturers created 3,300 new jobs in April alone, growing at a rate that ranks second in the nation, because Indiana is a state that works.”

The company, which is headquartered in Connecticut, will invest more than $100 million to construct and equip a production and distribution facility on 89 acres at 4748 Industries Road in Richmond. The facility, which will be Blue Buffalo’s second plant in the United States, will include a state-of-the-art pet food manufacturing plant as well as a research and development center.

“This is a very big day for Blue Buffalo,” said Bill Bishop, chairman and founder of Blue Buffalo. “This new, state-of-the-art addition to our manufacturing network will complement our facility in Missouri. We expect to further increase our internal production capacity and now will have two of the most modern manufacturing facilities in the pet food industry. Additionally, we plan to open a state-of-the-art R&D facility on our premises. We are also very proud of our plan to create over 160 full-time jobs and look forward to being an upstanding partner in the Richmond community.”

Blue Buffalo, which was founded in 2002, offers a complete line of wholesome natural foods and treats for dogs and cats, which are sold nationwide through pet specialty retailers. The company plans to break ground on the new facility later this year, and will hire for positions in food processing, food quality assurance and general management. Blue Buffalo is the fourth pet food producer to locate operations in Wayne County.

“This is a huge breakthrough for the city of Richmond and our entire area,” said Richmond Mayor Dave Snow. “It has been made possible by a new era of partnerships between the city, the county and our economic development corporation. Blue Buffalo’s commitment to Richmond is a testament to this area’s viability for job growth. With this announcement, Richmond has secured its place on the national map for economic development.”

Indiana has added more than 152,000 new jobs since January 2013, including 32,000 manufacturing jobs. Roughly 8,500 manufacturing businesses operate in Indiana today, accounting for 20 percent of the state’s workforce and 25 percent of Indiana’s total economic output.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Blue Buffalo Company up to $1,625,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. These incentives are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the company is not eligible to claim incentives. Wayne County and the city of Richmond have approved additional incentives at the request of the Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County Indiana.

Governor Pence Announces 2016 Mr. and Miss Indiana Math and Science Awards

0

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today announced the winners of the 2016 Mr. and Miss Math and Science awards. The Mr. and Miss Math and Science awards aim to recognize students who have exemplary achievements in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) classes and extracurricular activities. Each winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship through Indiana’s CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Plan.

“It is a privilege to honor these outstanding young Hoosiers for their early successes and pursuit of excellence in the fields of science and mathematics,” said Governor Pence. “Their accomplishments are certain to inspire others, and I have every confidence that the future of Indiana is bright in the hands of students like these. This administration is proud to continue to promote STEM education and inspire our state’s science and industry leaders of tomorrow.”

Fort Wayne’s Eric Baeza and Indianapolis’ Jasmine Kalia are named 2016 Mr. and Miss Math, and Terre Haute’s Sabin Karki and Tingyue Cui are named 2016 Mr. and Miss Science.

Eric Baeza, 2016 Mr. Math, is a senior at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, where he is a member of Key Club, Table Tennis Club, National Honors Society, the soccer team, and speech and debate team. He serves as President of Math Club, which placed first at a regional competition, and the Math Academic Team, in which he qualified for state. Eric has enrolled in International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and honors courses all four years of his high school career.

Jasmine Kalia, 2016 Miss Math, graduates this spring from Franklin Central High School as class valedictorian. She is a National Merit Scholar, U.S. Presidential Scholars semifinalist, Indiana Association of School Principals Academic All-Stars recipient, Senator Richard G. Lugar Distinguished Student Leadership Award recipient, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a three-time National Center for Women in Technology Indiana Affiliate winner and a 2016 national runner-up. She won the Excellence Award at the City of Indianapolis VEX Championship in November 2013 and was a school nominee and participant in the Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders. Kalia was a VEX Robotics Student Ambassador at the 2015 VEX Robotics World Championships. She volunteered as a mentor to the Franklin Central Middle School East Robotics Team, is a member of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Museum Apprentice Program, is a varsity tennis player, and a National Honor Society inductee. She has also conducted research with professors at the IUPUI Physics Laboratory and the Nanotechnology Discovery Academy and participated in the Preparing Outstanding Women for Engineering Roles camp.

Sabin Karki, 2016 Mr. Science, attends Terre Haute South Vigo High School, where he led the Science Bowl and Science Olympiads teams. Karki has presented bioinformatics research at the 2015 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, 2015 U.S. Army Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and the 2015 and 2013 Hoosier State Science and Engineering Fairs. In 2013, he was awarded an Indiana Academy of Science Research Grant to conduct microbiological research on drug resistance. Karki has traveled to Nepal for a variety of causes, including conducting cervical cancer research, volunteering with a group of engineers to build solar-powered computers for schoolchildren, and coordinating the efforts of a humanitarian team of Indiana doctors and nurses in the aftermath of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. Following graduation this spring, Karki plans to attend John Hopkins University to study biomedical engineering and later pursue dual MD/MBA degrees.

Tingyue Cui, 2016 Miss Science, will graduate from Terre Haute South Vigo High School this spring. Cui was an Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist, placed third in chemistry at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, placed third in the Indiana Science Talent Search, placed second in the Indiana State Science Fair, and was a member of the state champion Math Super Bowl team. Cui also represented the state of Indiana at the National Science and Humanities Symposium and in the American Regions Mathematics League. Upon graduation, Cui hopes to study chemistry in college and graduate school, with the eventual goal of working in academia as a professor and researcher.

Indiana’s top math and science students were nominated earlier this year, and a panel of STEM professionals, teachers, and university representatives selected the winners based on academic performance, work in research, leadership, community service, and extracurricular involvement. Nominations for the 2017 Mr. and Miss Math and Science awards will open next spring.

Conservatives Are Strangers In The Republican Party

Conservatives Are Strangers in the Republican Party

By Richard Moss MD

In the aftermath of the recent Republican primary in Indiana it is clear that the conservative movement has suffered a setback.  This was the anti-incumbent, anti-establishment year, wasn’t it?  It was our opportunity to take back the Republican Party and make of it a credible, opposition conservative party that stood on principle.

To paraphrase what I had written before: “Yes, we the conservative base have had it with the quisling Republican Party in Washington, with the moribund Republican leadership and their water-carriers in Congress who cave on every issue.  We can no longer tolerate big spending Republicans who come home during election time and campaign as conservatives and return to Washington and vote as liberals.”

I took solace in the Republican Presidential Primary process early on.  This is why, I surmised, the base had rejected the “Establishment.”  Jeb Bush, Chris Christy, Marco Rubio, and John Kasich, establishment figures all, were either out of the Presidential race or had no chance of winning.  It was only the outsiders left, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, a sure sign of the frustration the base felt towards the Republican ruling class.

But it didn’t quite work out that way in the Indiana primary.  With the defeat of conservative standard-bearer Ted Cruz, and the many questions surrounding Donald Trump’s commitment to conservative principles, conservatives are wondering what happened?  It would have been one thing if Trump had succeeded and Marlin Stutzman had defeated Todd Young in the race to replace retiring Republican Senator Dan Coats.  But Young won handily, with significant support from Mitch McConnell and the Chamber of Commerce, thus giving the nod to someone who embodied the reason why people were supposedly voting for Trump in the first place. Further, we failed to nominate a single new conservative to the Senate.

In 2016, a year when the GOP voters were supposedly more anti-establishment than ever, every single moderate/liberal Republican incumbent House member easily won reelection.  Trey Hollingsworth, a wealthy lifelong Democrat carpetbagger from Tennessee, spent millions of his own money to win the primary in the open seat to replace Todd Young in Indiana’s 9th Congressional District.

Then there was the Republican Presidential primary process that resembled more a cage match rather than a substantive debate over critical, conservative issues.  The Republican Party managed to squander its best opportunity in a generation to make their case for balanced budgets, limited government, and free markets against the debacle of the Obama years.  But then what would you expect? The old bulls that run the Republican Party at the national level will be content to “cut deals” with Trump (or Hillary) as they did with Obama, and the reckless spending will continue unabated, the same deficits and debt, the printing of money, and the unsustainable growth of government and the welfare state.

These were the issues a responsible, fiscally prudent Republican Party was supposed to grapple with. But there was not a hint of this in the primary process, nor any discussion of other major concerns such as restoring separation of powers and Constitutional order, the assault by Obama and his pen, phone, and executive fiats that merged the legislative and executive functions in lawless, unconstitutional acts, from Amnesty to Obamacare to Sanctuary Cities to the destabilizing and dangerous Nuclear Deal with Iran.  Nor was there a debate regarding the overarching federal bureaucracy, the “fourth” branch of government that release thousands of pages of regulations each year with the impact of law and virtually no Congressional oversight, burdening and stifling economic activity, a completely non-democratic process that usurps Congress’s legislative function.  The Republican Congress that seemed unwilling to rouse itself from its stupor to defend the prerogatives and powers of Congress ignored all this and much more.

And so constitutional conservatives wander in the wilderness, strangers in our own party.  We recognize the power of the media and incumbency, “name ID,” the “Establishment” and money to decide outcomes despite our best efforts. These forces effectively undermine insurgent candidates that seek to challenge the status quo. Furthermore, Establishment candidates run on our issues only to abandon them later.

In my recent campaign for Congress to represent Indiana’s 8th district, I attempted to sound, however unsuccessfully, these themes. Although ultimately defeated, I hope that this message will animate Congressman Larry Bucshon, other Republicans, and perhaps moderate Democrats in the general election and beyond. The Republican Party must decide if it is to become a principled conservative party that stands for liberty and limited government or remain the big government, big spending, liberal, progressive party it is today.

I would like to thank my many volunteers, supporters, and voters.  Regardless of individual defeats, the cause to restore our Constitutional system and save the Republic continues.
