0

The No. 39 University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 41 Drury University, 5-4, in their opening match of the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament.

The Eagles earned their first win of the contest at number three doubles. With an 8-3 win, junior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia) and freshman James Hardiman (Blackwell Bristol, United Kingdom) tied the USI all-time record for consecutive doubles victories with 17. The mark ties the 22-year-old record set by Tony Bacon and Chad Higgins. The duo finishes the 2015-16 season undefeated.

Sophomore Samuel Kiladejo (London, England) and junior Paul Forichon (Nimes, France) fell just short of a victory at number-one, 9-7. The duo dropped their match to a Panther team made up of this year’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Freshman of the year. At number-two, senior Jack Joyce(Bournemouth, England) and sophomore Anthony Van Rompay (Schilde, Belgium) were defeated 8-2.

Moving into singles competition, USI quickly made up the deficit winning the first three singles matches. Barris was able to sweep his opponent at six with consecutive 6-0 wins. Forichon put the Eagles ahead in the match with his 7-6, 6-3 at number-five.

Joyce was able to temporarily cushion the Eagles’ lead with his win at number-two. The senior picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win to finish the season with a 21-5 singles mark. Joyce finished his USI career with 158 combined win putting him in third place in the USI record book.

Despite the 4-2 lead, the Eagles would drop the final three matches at one, four, and three singles. USI end’s there season with a 17-6 overall record that was highlighted by a 10-match win streak during the year and an appearance in the GLVC Championship.

VISIT POSEY COUNTY INDIANA

Take your iPhone or laptop and go to www.visitposeycounty.com. This new website was launched May 05, 2016. Mike Webster designed and developed the site with the input from a knowledgeable committee of seven community volunteers. Mike also took many of the marvelous photographs which appear throughout the site.

Mike along with Posey County businessman and owner of New Harmony Soap Company, Jim Spann, and Connie Weinzapfel who is the Director of Historic New Harmony, introduced the site at a reception held in the New Harmony Atheneum. The Red Geranium Restaurant hosted the event.

Posey County’s Board of Commissioners and County Council enacted an Innkeepers Tax in July 2014. The 5% tax has already raised over $170,000 to promote tourism in Posey County. Some of those monies were used to develop the new website.

According to Jim Spann the Committee’s goal was to promote tourism in Posey County by having readily available Internet information that shows the whole county in depth. If you pull up the site and click on any of the topics, you will find the Committee has succeeded. Take lodging for example. If tourists are looking for hotel lodging, they can click on places to stay, then hotels. The Cox family Four Seasons Motel in Mt. Vernon is one of the businesses that comes up with a full description and photographs.

Should tourists be looking for a bed and breakfast, a family could find Cook’s on Brewery Bed & Breakfast in New Harmony. Many places to stay throughout the county are easy to find. With full descriptions and many links to the businesses’ own websites there is no need for guesswork.

Even those of us who are privileged to live in Posey County will be overwhelmed with the number of places to eat and the variety of fare. Brain sandwiches at New Harmony’s Yellow Tavern or, soon, locally brewed beer at Sara’s Bistro and Wine Bar less than a block from The Yellow. Perhaps one might want a homemade ice cream creation at Bliss in Mt. Vernon or homemade pie at the Depot Diner in Griffin. Of course, Posey County’s German heritage is found from Weinzapfel’s Tavern in St. Philip to the Silver Bell in St. Wendell. One can even find Cajun cuisine at the Red Wagon in Poseyville.

There is a comprehensive, countywide events calendar and maps are provided to locate each event. It is surprising and exciting to see the numerous and diverse activities available each month of the year in Posey County.

Posey County’s unique and fascinating history is showcased throughout the website. One could easily write a report or even a newspaper colu

Aces fall to the Patriots

DALLAS, Texas – Matt Jones became the 12th Aces hitter of the season to log a home run, but it was too late for the University of Evansville baseball team on Saturday as the team dropped a 12-2 contest to Dallas Baptist at Horner Ballpark.

A four-run first inning set the tone for the hosts as a Jameson Hannah two-run blast highlighted the frame, and DBU (31-14, 10-3 Missouri Valley Conference) went on to add runs in both the second and third before adding four more in the fourth.

Brent Jurceka was given his first career start in the contest for UE (25-20, 7-7 MVC), and he was dealt his third loss of the season as he was pegged with 10 runs allowed (nine earned) over the opening four innings.

Following another DBU score in the sixth, Jones sent a towering pinch-hit homer over the fence in left field to cut the deficit to nine, but doubles from Austin Listi and Matt Duce re-established the 10 run lead for the Patriots to bring the game to an end in the bottom half of the seventh.

UE will return to action on Sunday as the Aces are set to square off against DBU at 1 p.m.

NOTES: All but one Aces hitter this season has logged a home run … The last time 12 different UE players registered a homer was during the 2001 season. … This weekend marks the 14th, 15th and 16th meetings between the Patriots and the Aces … Dating back to 1978, the first year that UE participated in Division I baseball, UE is 5-10 versus Dallas Baptist … Last season, the Aces dropped two out of three to the Patriots in Evansville … UE last visited DBU in 2014, winning a pair of games at Horner Ballpark on the way to hoisting a conference title … Since 1978, the Aces are 7-15 all-time against opponents from the state of Texas.

Eagles salvage a split to end regular season

0

The 26th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The Greyhounds took the opener, 12-2, while the Screaming Eagles picked up the win in game two, 8-4.

USI sees its record go to 33-17 overall and 20-8 in the GLVC, while UIndy finishes the regular season, 32-18 overall, 17-11 GLVC. The Eagles, who have won nine of their last 10 games after having an eight-game winning streak snapped in the opener, will be the number seed from the GLVC East Division in the GLVC Tournament, which is slated for May 12-15 at Grand Park.

The GLVC Tournament pairing will be announced Sunday evening after the rest of the conference schedule is completed tomorrow.

In the nightcap, sophomore second baseman Sam Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) hit a grand slam in the fifth and senior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) knocked a two-run blast in the sixth to lead the Eagles to an 8-4 win. The Eagles also got a two-run double from senior catcher Ryan Bertram(Zionsville, Indiana) in the seventh to complete the scoring.

On the mound, freshman left-hander Chase Partain (Evansville, Indiana) picked his second win in his second start. Partain (2-0) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.

Senior right-hander T.J. Decker (Brazil, Indiana) posted his team-best sixth save of the year by throwing the final 3.1 innings. Decker allowed a hit and struck out two to get the save.

The Eagles could not get on track in the opener as the Greyhounds raced to a 12-2 win. UIndy scored seven times in the first two innings and sealed the victory with a five-run fourth. USI got on the scoreboard with a tally in third and one in fifth on a RBI-single by senior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) and a RBI-walk by senior shortstop Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana).

USI freshman right-hander Austin Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) lost for the first time in 2016. Krizan (4-1) allowed nine runs, six earned, on nine walk. Senior right-hander Alex Holder (Princeton, Indiana) pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up the final three runs on two hits and a walk.

Indiana Office of Technology and Indiana State Police Warn Public about “Phishing” Scams

0

The Indiana Information Sharing and Analysis Center (IN-ISAC) — a joint effort of the Indiana State Police, Indiana Office of Technology, the Indiana Fusion Center and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security — was established in Fall 2015 to help further secure state government from cyber threats and to help educate the public about cybersecurity.

Here are some tips about phishing. For more cybersecurity tips, visit http://cybersecurity.IN.gov.

Beware of phishing attempts

All Hoosiers must be careful not to fall victim to phishing, a particularly misleading and dangerous type of spam. Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is the illicit attempt by criminals to obtain personal information. Phishing may occur by email, on Internet sites or over the phone by real people or robotic calls.

Phishing messages generally have the following characteristics:

  • They are unsolicited.
  • They contain an urgent request for personal financial information.
  • To entice a response, they frequently contain exciting or upsetting statements.
  • They will purport to be from a legitimate business (banks, PayPal, e-Bay, etc.)
  • They are generally not personalized, though they can be.
  • You may be directed to fill out a form in the email, go to a linked website or call a telephone number.
  • The sender will eventually seek some or all of the following:
    1. Name
    2. Address
    3. Date of birth
    4. Bank account or credit card information
    5. Social security number
    6. Login IDs and passwords

The phisher’s goal is to fraudulently gain your information and use it for personal gain. The number and sophistication of phishing scams sent out to consumers are increasing rapidly. While online banking and e-commerce are safe, consumers as a general rule must be careful about giving out personal financial information over the Internet or by telephone.

What should I do if I receive a “phishing” message?

Most legitimate businesses will not solicit such information through email. If you believe it is legitimate, call a customer service number (not one listed in the email) or type the legitimate company URL directly into the address line (do not cut and paste from the email).

The site below can be referenced to see if the message you have received is part of a phishing attack. Failing to find your particular message on any list does not make it legitimate!

Phishing techniques designed to trick recipients

To lure people into responding, phishers try to use:

  • Realistic looking and sounding messages
  • Effective use of legitimate company logos in counterfeit messages
  • Parts of legitimate company names in phony URLs
  • Redirected links making it appear as if a legitimate address is being accessed when actually the victim is being routed to a phony imitation of the legitimate entity
  • Phone systems used as part of scams to gather confidential information instead of an electronic form
  • Fake yellow security lock graphics. Typically, double-clicking on the lock displays the security certificate
  • Spoofing or forging https:// in the URL to give the appearance of a secure site

Aces softball sweeps Loyola in doubleheader

0

Regular season comes to a close on Sunday

CHICAGO – A great all-around effort on Saturday saw the University of Evansville softball team earn a doubleheader sweep over Loyola in the final series of the regular season.

Evansville (24-24, 12-13 MVC) took game one by a 4-1 score before wrapping up the day with a 5-3 triumph over the Ramblers (20-28, 4-19 MVC). With the victories, the Aces officially punched their ticket to the MVC Tournament and will fight for seeing tomorrow in the season finale at noon.

“I am really proud of what this team has done this season, they set a goal of making it to the conference tournament and they accomplished that,” UE head coach Mat Mundell said. “As a group, they wanted to change the perception of Aces softball and I think they have done that. They wanted to compete in every game and they have also done that. Their story does not end with just that one goal, it is onto the next goal!”

The Aces offense wasted no time in getting rolling, scoring a run in the top of the first inning in game one on a Hayli Scott single. Loyola tied it up in the third, but the Aces plated two runs in the fifth frame. Chandra Parr reached base via a walk and Morgan Florey took full advantage, belting a home run to right field to help the Aces retake the lead.

Morgan Lambert notched an RBI single in the seventh to give the Aces an insurance run and Florey took care of the rest in the circle as UE took the 4-1 win. Florey went the distance, allowing one run on six hits. Evansville mustered up just four hits in the game, but three of them were RBI knocks.

Game two started off scoreless for the first three innings before Evansville erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth. UE loaded the bases with no outs in the inning and Michal Luckett took full advantage, singling to center to score the first two runs of the game.

With one out, the Aces made it very exciting as a double steal saw Luckett advance to second while Kori Keyes stole home. Bailee Bostic finished off the inning with an RBI single to give UE a 4-0 lead. After the Ramblers scored in the bottom of the 4th frame, Evansville got the run right back as Luckett posted another RBI hit to make it a 5-1 game.

Loyola added a pair of runs in the seventh, but starter Amanda Blankenship was able to finish off the win, pitching the complete game, giving up three runs on eight hits. UE had five hits in the game with Luckett accounting for two of them. She also had three RBI.

On Sunday, the regular season finishes up as UE finishes the 3-game series against the Ramblers with a noon contest.

111 Monument Circle to become Salesforce Tower Indianapolis

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence joined Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and executives from Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) today as the company announced plans to significantly expand its regional headquarters in Indianapolis, investing more than $40 million over the next 10 years and creating up to 800 new jobs by 2021. To accommodate its growth, the company will move into a new regional headquarters downtown at 111 Monument Circle, which will be branded as Salesforce Tower Indianapolis.

“Today’s outstanding commitment from Salesforce proves without a doubt that Indiana is now the Midwest hub for technology and innovation,” said Governor Pence. “In recent years, the technology sector has added more than 5,000 jobs in central Indiana alone, growing at a rate more than triple the national average. Global leaders like Salesforce have a world of options to consider for growth, and I am excited that the Salesforce team has once again selected the Hoosier state to create hundreds of high-wage, quality jobs. Powered by a talented workforce and a low-tax, low-regulation business climate, I am confident that this regional headquarters will propel Salesforce to new heights, advancing innovation for years to come.”

The company, which is the world’s fastest growing top 10 software company, will begin moving into Salesforce Tower Indianapolis in early 2017. The new headquarters will house both Salesforce and Salesforce Marketing Cloud, founded as ExactTarget in 2000. Plans for the new office include collaboration spaces, mindfulness areas and social zones. The company also plans to renovate the lobby and create a dedicated space where guests can experience interactive, hands-on demonstrations of the Salesforce Customer Success Platform.

“Salesforce is among Indiana’s largest technology employers, and we’re thrilled to be investing for further growth in Indianapolis,” said Scott McCorkle, chief executive officer of Salesforce Marketing Cloud. “Salesforce Tower Indianapolis, our regional headquarters, will give our employees a fantastic place to work and serve our customers and community every day.”

Salesforce has been named one of Fortune’s Best Places to Work for the past nine years and was recently recognized on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Best Places to Work in Indiana list. The company was founded in San Francisco 17 years ago, and has been called one of the world’s most innovative companies five years in a row according to Forbes. Salesforce has well over 1,000 employees in the Indianapolis area and more than 20,000 employees worldwide.

The company is committed to supporting Indiana through its 1-1-1 integrated corporate philanthropy model, in which Salesforce’s product, resources and employee time are dedicated to the communities where employees live and work. Today, Salesforce employees in Indiana are committing to deliver 100,000 total employee volunteer hours to local nonprofits this year.

Salesforce is currently hiring and plans to add new positions in both business operations and technology development. Interested applicants should visitwww.salesforce.com/careers for a list of openings.

“I am proud and excited to welcome Salesforce to their future home in the heart of downtown Indianapolis,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Salesforce is a tremendous partner to our city and residents, bringing hundreds of new jobs to the community and solidifying Indianapolis as a leading destination for innovative companies. I want to thank Salesforce for their commitment to grow here and I look forward to their emergent footprint in Indianapolis.”

Salesforce is the sixth largest enterprise software company and the fastest growing top 10 software company in the world today. Over the last 17 years, Salesforce has expanded and redefined CRM, bringing social, mobile, data science and IoT technologies to its trusted cloud platform, enabling companies to grow sales faster, deliver customer service everywhere, create 1-to-1 customer journeys, engage with customers in interactive communities, deliver analytics for every business user and build modern mobile apps fast.
Pending approval from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) Board of Directors, the IEDC will offer Salesforce up to $17,200,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $750,000 in training grants. These incentives are performance-based and will apply after Salesforce attains its current hiring goal of 1,560 associates in Indiana. The city of Indianapolis will consider additional incentives.

According to TechPoint, Indiana’s technology initiative, computer and IT jobs in Central Indiana grew by 17 percent – at a rate more than double the growth rate of all occupations – from 2009-2014, creating more than 5,000 jobs and exceeding the national growth rate of tech jobs of 5.7 percent. The Indianapolis area ranks No. 2 in the nation for tech grads (DataFox), No. 5 in the nation for women in tech (Fast Company) and No. 6 in the nation for tech jobs (Fast Company).
