USI BB bows out of the NCAA II Finals

0

The 14th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team bowed out of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship after losing to fourth-ranked Lander University, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon in Cary, North Carolina. USI, which lost its first elimination game in the NCAA II Tournament since 2011, sees its season end with a 38-21 overall record, while Lander sees its record rise to 44-15 mark.

The Screaming Eagles battled from behind all day, trailing 1-0 after an inning-and-a-half. USI knotted the score at 1-1 when senior first baseman Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) doubled with two outs and scored sophomore leftfielder Drake McNamara (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) all the way from first base.

Lander would rally to take the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning to lead 4-1. USI would cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth when senior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) scored senior centerfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) from second with a RBI-single.

The 4-2 final score would be as close as the Eagles would come in the final game of the season.

Eagles’ freshman right-hander Chase Partain (Evansville, Indiana) did his best in his second post-season start, but took the loss. Partain (3-1) allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out a season-best seven batters.

Governor Pence Op-ed in The Elkhart Truth Regarding President Obama’s Visit

1

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today penned an op-ed in The Elkhart Truth regarding Hoosiers’ economic successes on the day of President Obama’s visit to Elkhart, Indiana.

Excerpts:

“I believe the people of Elkhart and my fellow Hoosiers have brought our economy back in spite of the burdens that higher taxes, mandates and increasing regulations from Washington, D.C. have placed on them.”

“So I hope you will join me in giving credit where credit is due, to the people of Elkhart and north central Indiana whose work ethic, character, and ingenuity continue to make Indiana one of the best states in America to start a business, grow a business or get a job.”

Welcome back, Mr. President. With your return to the city of Elkhart, people across this country will see firsthand a community and a state in the midst of a great American comeback and we appreciate you focusing the nation on what Hoosiers have accomplished.

The people of Elkhart are rightfully proud of the economic growth they have experienced since the economic downturn.  The unemployment rate in the Elkhart County area is 3.9 percent and more than 12,000 jobs have been added since January 2013.

Manufacturing is booming in traditional industries like recreational vehicles, conversion vans and boat manufacturers, along with their many suppliers. The most recent announcement came yesterday when Spartan Motors announced plans to add nearly 150 new jobs and invest $10.9 million in Elkhart County.

Mr. President, we welcome you back to Elkhart since your first visit since 2009. I believe the people of Elkhart and my fellow Hoosiers have brought our economy back in spite of the burdens that higher taxes, mandates and increasing regulations from Washington, D.C. have placed on them. Our state has experienced an economic comeback because the story in Indiana has been very different.

Since I became governor in January 2013, we have worked every day to lower the burden of taxes and regulations so businesses large and small can focus on jobs and growth instead of worrying about the burden of their state government.

We have balanced two budgets, cut taxes every year including the largest state income tax cut in Indiana history. We repealed the inheritance tax, maintained strong reserves and invested more than $2.0 billion in our state’s infrastructure to support a growing economy.

We have also made education for our current workforce and the next generation the top priority, with record investments in education while making career and technical education a priority in every high school in Indiana again. The high school graduation rate has reached nearly 88 percent, seventh best in the nation and for the first time in Indiana’s history, we invested in early learning programs for disadvantaged kids and have one of the largest school voucher programs in America.

All of these efforts have not gone unnoticed.  Indiana was recently recognized by Chief Executive magazine as the number one state in the Midwest for business, and fifth in the nation.

Indiana’s economy is on a roll with more Hoosiers going to work every day than ever before in our state’s history.  Since I have been governor, more than 150,000 new jobs have been created by businesses across our state and unemployment has dropped from more than eight percent when I took office to roughly five percent today.

There are many reasons for the remarkable economic recovery that has been created in Indiana but I believe most of the credit belongs to the hard-working people of this community and the state. So I hope you will join me in giving credit where credit is due, to the people of Elkhart and north central Indiana whose work ethic, character, and ingenuity continue to make Indiana one of the best states in America to start a business, grow a business or get a job. So welcome back to Elkhart Mr. President, a great comeback in a great community in a state that works.

SLAMMERS STRIKE IN FIRST TO DOWN OTTERS

0

The Evansville Otters were defeated by the Joliet Slammers 7-2 on the first match of a three game home series at Bosse Field. The Slammers scored early and often as they managed to record three hits and draw two walks in the very first inning of the contest to gain a 4-0 lead. Joliet would tack on an additional two runs in the fourth after a wall-scraping homerun by Alfredo Rodriguez to increase the lead to 6-0. Evansville’s offense appeared fairly anemic through the first half of the contest. In fact, the Otters mustered only one hit through the first four innings. The home team would score a run in the fifth following an RBI single by third baseman, Christopher Riopedre, and in the ninth after an opposite field RBI single from rightfielder, Kaeo Aliviado. The duo of Chris Breen and Nik Balog went 1-4 in the game to finish the day tied with the team-lead in batting average at .391.

Next, the Otters will look to bounce back as they face off against the Joliet Slammers tomorrow, with first pitch slated for 6:35 pm CDT. Tickets are on sale and may be obtained online or by calling (812) 435-8686.

Driver Trapped after Baseline Road Crash

0
On Monday, May 30, 2016 at 7:55pm the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2900 block of West Baseline Road in reference to a motor vehicle crash with reported injury.
Responding deputies found an overturned silver Dodge Ram pickup truck with a female driver trapped underneath. The driver, later identified as Ms. Tessa McKinney, was pinned under the “A” pillar of the truck against the ground. The Scott Township Fire Department rendered aid while awaiting the arrival of a Life Flight helicopter. Ms. McKinney was extricated from the vehicle and flown to Deaconess Hospital. A passenger in the vehicle, who had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was able to free himself and sustained only minor injury.

Evidence observed at the scene as well as witness statements indicated that Ms. McKinney had been driving recklessly prior to losing control of the truck and entering a ditch. Preliminary blood alcohol results indicated that Ms. McKinney’s blood alcohol content was in excess of the legal limit. The investigation remains open pending final toxicology results from the State Department of Toxicology.

DRIVER:

Tessa Lynn McKinney, 21, of Owensville. Released from hospital May 31, 2016.

Overview Of Our Unscientific But Trendy “Readers Poll”

Overview Of Our Unscientific But Trendy “Readers Poll”

We are fascinated with the results of our unscientific but trendy “Readers Poll” we have had up for the past several days. Our readers chose Russell G. Lloyd, Sr as the mayor who did the best job, and that is not hard to understand. The handsome and extremely likable Republican was a big change from his three-term predecessor, Frank McDonald, Sr. who was a Democrat. We find it interesting that Mayor Frank McDonald, Sr was a close second choice for best mayor to the senior Mayor Lloyd.  Both men have sons who followed in their fathers’ footsteps.

Mayor McDonald,  Sr. created a smooth-running political machine, first as Vanderburgh County Sheriff for eight years and then as mayor for twelve years. The McDonald machine did little to conceal the practice of nepotism and  political patronage that was a hallmark of the tight grip he held on his party, and in later years spilled over into the Republican party. Those were the days of the “Two percent Club” when City Hall workers were expected to pledge 2% of their gross annual salaries to the party who held the department where they worked. It was a good idea for workers and all of their families to show up to help with re-election campaigns, too.  Bottom line, he was the mayor whom made USI a reality.

We wonder if some of the reader approval for the senior McDonald and Lloyd might be nostalgia for better days here in Evansville. Chrysler was gone, but we still had Whirlpool and the City’s budgets were balanced. Bonding capacity and capital improvements didn’t cause the anxiety among the electorate that they now do, and mot people just accepted that there were going to be some questionable governmental practices. It was politics, after all.

Our two least popular mayors come as no surprise. Democrat Mike Vandeveer followed Russ Lloyd Sr. in a seemingly competent administration, that worked to begin neighborhood and downtown revitalization efforts. Unfortunately, things were not what they appeared to be. It became necessary for Vandeveer to resign abruptly during his second term, under a cloud of allegations of serious impropriety on his part. The mayor who received the fewest votes was our current City Controller, Russell G. Lloyd Jr. We wonder if his dreams of a baseball stadium on the riverfront and the millions of dollars he wasted trying to make that happen are the sole reason for the distaste our readers have for his administration, or if some of it is because of the budgetary difficulties that Evansville is suffering at the hands of Lloyd Winnecke, his current boss.

The junior Mayor McDonald and Jonathon Weinzapfel finished in the middle of the pack. McDonald II presided over three reasonably uneventful terms and left office unscathed. Weinzapfel is most remembered for the construction of the Ford Center and the events leading up to the unsuccessful bid for office made by the late, well regarded Rick Davis.

We were most surprised at the dismal showing made by the present Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. Only 11% of CCO readers voted for him as the best Mayor of Evansville. That comes as a shock in light of the fact that he won a landslide victory over Gail Reicken just seven months ago. We wonder if this stems from a bad case of “buyer’s remorse” on the part of voters who have a growing concern about the City’s solvency, or if the victory is a reflection on the badly-run campaign waged by the Democrats and Mrs. Reicken, We suspect that it may be a combination of the two.

There is a trend that we see in the evaluation of each mayor’s performance, and that is the more fiscally conservative and “down to earth” the mayor, the better he is liked by our readers. We don’t believe those voting in our non-scientific poll are unusual. Those qualities seem to be more important to the opinions of of our readers than party affiliation or other qualities. Potential candidates for office, take note!

Todays “Readers Poll” question is:  Who do you feel was the most effective President of Evansville City Council in recent years?
