Errors cost USI BB in loss

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team committed three costly errors in beginning its 10-game road trip with an 8-1 non-conference loss at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI saw its record rise to 16-11 overall, while UMSL ends the day with an 18-7 overall.

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the contest, the Screaming Eagles committed a pair of throwing errors on back-to-back plays in the bottom of the third as the Tritons took a 2-0 lead. UMSL would seal the victory with four tallies in the fourth and pair of insurance runs in the eighth for the 8-1 final.

USI posted its only tally of the contest in the top of the fifth when senior shortstop Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana) singled in sophomore leftfielder Buddy Johnson (Shelbyville, Kentucky). Niemeier was the only Eagle to post multiple hits in the contest.

On the mound, senior right-hander Alex Holder (Princeton, Indiana) took the loss in his third start of the year. Holder (2-3) allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out a season-high five in six innings of work.

Senior right-hander Ben Blaize (Henderson, Kentucky) struck out the side in the seventh, while senior right-hander T.J. Decker (Brazil, Indiana) allowed the final two UMSL runs in the eighth to close out the game for USI.

The Eagles continue the 10-game road trip this weekend when they travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to play a four-game series against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Rangers are 4-19 and are still looking for their first GLVC win of 2016 with a league mark of 0-8.

USI leads the all-time series with UW-Parkside, 39-26, after sweeping four-game series last year at the USI Baseball Field.

FORD CENTER FINALE

The IceMen wrapped up their eight years in Evansville and five seasons at the Ford Center on Saturday in front of 6,652 fans. In the team’s five seasons playing in the building, four of which were in the ECHL, the total attendance was 875,728. While the IceMen came up just short in a 3-2 loss Saturday against Tulsa, fans stuck around to show their support and share memories of the organization’s time in Evansville.

MEMORABLE FINISH AT MEMORIAL

Sunday in Fort Wayne, the IceMen jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two goals in the first period and two more in the second. Just when it looked like the Komets were down and out, Fort Wayne scored four goals in the final 6:30 of regulation, including the tying goal with 15 seconds left to force overtime. Evansville got its redemption in the extra period, when Matthew Zay buried the game-winner with just over a minute left to win the game 5-4.

NEW RECORD HOLDER

Evansville forward Nathan Moon set a franchise record for games played Sunday, when he suited up for his 160th career IceMen game. The Belleville, ON native was traded back to Evansville in early November and leads the team in assists (34) and points (49), and extended his season-high assist streak to five games, with a helper on the first IceMen goal in Fort Wayne.

BACK FROM BINGO

Forward Daultan Leveille returned to the IceMen from the AHL’s Binghamton Senators for Evansville’s final road trip to Allen, Texas. The St. Catherines, ON native is tied with Tyson Fawcett for the team lead in goals (21), and the two are just two goals behind Matt Schepke’s team record during its four years in the ECHL. Schepke had 23 goals in the 2013-14 season.

I’M ONLY HUMAN, HARRY!

Rookie Andrew Harrison has found the scoring touch the past three games. The forward, who joined the IceMen 27 games ago from the Federal Hockey League’s Danville Dashers, scored 35 seconds into the second period Sunday at Fort Wayne to earn his first career three-game goal streak. Harrison also tallied the final goal in Evansville’s 5-3 win over Cincinnati Friday and the first goal in a 3-2 loss against Tulsa Saturday. He has seven goals and four assists since joining the IceMen.

DEFENDING THE KELLY

The Allen Americans captured the Kelly Cup in their first ECHL season in 2014-15, after winning the Central Hockey League’s Ray Miron President’s Cup in both 2012-13 and 2013-14. The Americans have clinched a playoff spot and are in fourth place in the Western Conference with 85 points, three points ahead of Idaho and Utah with three games remaining.

COSTELLO NEARING CENTURY MARK

ECHL leading scorer Chad Costello is three points away from 100 with three games left in the regular season. The eighth year pro is in his second season in Allen, where he totaled 125 points (41 goals, 84 assists) in 2014-15. This year, Costello leads the league in assists (73), points (97), and is 17th in goals (24), and is the front-runner for MVP.

FINAL JERSEY AUCTION

The final chance to bid on game-worn player jerseys will be in a live auction Monday, April 11 at 6pm at Beef O’ Brady’s in Newburgh. Following the team’s final three games in Allen, Texas on April 6, 8 and 9, all of the Evansville IceMen players will sign their jerseys for the winning bidders.

 

UE Coffee Hour Senior Reading Set for Wednesday, April 20

This month’s University of Evansville’s Coffee Hour Lecture will feature the Senior Reading, during which graduating UE creative writing majors read their poetry and prose. Winners of the Virginia Grabill Writing Awards will also be announced. The event is planned for Wednesday, April 20, at 4:00 p.m. in UE’s Melvin Peterson Gallery. It is free and open to the public.

Governor Pence Ceremonially Signs Regional Cities Bill in Evansville

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today joined regional leaders in Southwest Indiana to ceremonially sign House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1001, which will provide $42 million for each of the Regional Cities initiatives, at the Signature School’s Robert L. Koch II Science Center in Evansville. The Governor signed HEA 1001, which goes into effect July 1, 2016, into law on March 23, 2016.

“Through the Indiana Regional Cities Initiative, we have seen regions across the state working in partnership to inspire and generate the development of long-term and dynamic plans for the future,” said Governor Pence. “Indiana’s Great Southwest plan will be key in attracting and retaining a skilled workforce and cultivating a strong business climate for long-term economic development and improving quality of life for the benefit of Hoosiers.”

The Governor was joined by Indiana Economic Development Corporation President Jim Schellinger, Greg Wathen, President of the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana and Jean Hitchcock, President of Signature School. Also in attendance were bill co-author Rep. Holli Sullivan (R – Evansville), Rep. Ron Bacon (R – Chandler), Sen. Vaneta Becker (R – Evansville), Rep. Wendy McNamara (R – Mount Vernon), Rep. Gail Riecken (D – Evansville), Sen. Jim Tomes (R – Wadesville), and Rep. Tom Washburne (R – Inglefield).

Indiana’s Great Southwest plan encompasses 19 projects that focus on strengthening the heart of the region by leveraging the new Indiana University academic medical education and research center, improving livability and connectivity, and attracting talent and workforce to the community.

The Indiana Regional Cities Initiative encourages communities to work together to develop and implement regional plans. HEA 1001 allocates $42 million for each of the Regional Cities initiatives, ensuring three regional development plans in North Central, Northeast, and Southwest Indiana receive state funding. Together, these plans outline 100 quality of place projects totaling more than $2 billion in combined public and private investment. More than half of these planned projects, including new riverfront developments, revitalized downtowns and expanded trail systems, are currently scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018.
