 Some 50 tri state-area students grades 1st – 7th are getting a flying start on aeronautics and aviation careers this week, as part of a week-long aviation-themed summer camp at the Koch Family Children’s Museum of Evansville (cMoe), sponsored by Vectren and Evansville Regional Airport.
Evansville Regional Airport and Tri-State Aero, Inc. will host the campers one day on Friday, June 24, as part of the camp’s “finale†and provide the students with a behind-the-scenes look at the two facilities’ operations, personalized interaction with Shriners Fest Air Show Pilots and aircraft tours.
“The camp is a fun, interactive week of learning more about the world of aviation through a variety of experiences,†said Leslie Fella, Evansville Regional Airport spokesperson. “Professional, military and civilian experts will introduce campers to the principles of flight, teamwork, pre-flight safety, building model aircraft and much more.â€
Now in its third year, the museum’s Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics (STEM) camp provides students the opportunity to explore physics, chemistry, engineering and electricity. And for the first-time ever, this year’s camp also lends exploration in aviation and the building of airplanes and taking on real world challenges.
“As an educator and lover of all things science, this week is my favorite week of the summer. It
allows campers to learn in an environment that is often different than school or home,†said Ben Baker, Koch Family Children’s Museum of Evansville, Director of Education and Experience. “Campers are challenged and guided in a way that sparks and fosters a passion for learning, exploring and construction.â€
Baker said that the museum’s camps are structured to tie the student’s activities back to the real world, whether it be a challenge, profession, or area of study. And having the airport’s support, he said, allows the museum to provide the campers with an experience outside of the museum to see real world applications of what has been discussed throughout the week.
“Our partnership with EVV also allows our campers to explore newfound interests in a setting that encourages a passion for new and exciting things,†said Baker. “The campers’ visit to EVV will not only further our opportunity to educate and help ignite interest in aviation, it will also create memories that campers will cherish for years to come.â€
According to Fella, studies show the continued growth of the aerospace industry could be hampered by a severe shortage of trained aviation professionals if the aviation community doesn’t step in and reach out to young people.
Although the airport visit’s emphasis is on igniting interest in aeronautics and careers in aviation, the important social and major economic role aviation plays in region and the importance to fly local, will also be stressed.

Four Eagles land on Academic All-America XC/T&F teams
The University of Southern Indiana landed four student-athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-All-America Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field teams Thursday.
Seniors Johnnie Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) and Tyler Pence (Springfield, Illinois) along with junior Josh Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) represented USI on the men’s squad, while sophomore Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) represented the Screaming Eagles on the women’s team. Both Johnnie Guy and Pence earned first-team honors, while Josh Guy and Roberts earned second and third-team accolades, respectively.
After earning first-team Academic All-America honors in 2014 and 2015, Johnnie Guy becomes the first three-time Academic All-American in school history after amassing a 3.65 grade point average in engineering. Guy was the GLVC Runner of the Year as well as the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for cross country and earned a combined five All-America awards in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, bringing his school-record total to 16.
Guy was the national champion in the 10,000 meters as a sophomore in 2014 before finishing second in the indoor 5,000 meters as a junior in 2015. He also finished second in the 10,000 meters in 2015.
Pence, a two-time national champion, is earning Academic All-America honors for the second straight season after earning second-team All-America honors in both the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters during the outdoor season. He was the national champion in the indoor 5,000 meters as well as the 10,000 meters in 2015.
An elementary education major with a 3.52 GPA, Pence was the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Track Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2015 and finished his career with a combined nine All-America awards.
Josh Guy, the twin brother of Johnnie Guy, is claiming Academic All-America honors for the first time after earning All-Conference honors in both cross country and indoor track & field. Also an engineering major with a 3.64 GPA, Josh Guy earned second-team All-America honors as well as All-Region honors in the 10,000 meters this spring after earning first-team All-America honors in the event last year.
Roberts had a stellar season at USI as she garners her first Academic All-America award. The GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for Cross Country, Roberts finished fifth at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships to earn her first career All-America honor.
A pre-occupational therapy major with a 3.72 GPA, Roberts earned second-team All-America honors in the indoor 5,000 meters before shattering USI’s outdoor records in both the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters. She capped her season off with a second-place showing in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships, bringing home first-team All-America honors in tow.
In the last three years, USI Cross Country/Track & Field student-athletes have racked up eight Academic All-America awards. USI’s men have recorded three straight top-10 finishes in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings.
USI visits Purdue for November 1 exhibition
The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team will open the 2016-17 season by visiting the Boilermakers of Purdue University November 1 for an exhibition contest. Tip-off time in West Lafayette, Indiana, is still to be announced.
“I am grateful to Head Coach Matt Painter for the opportunity to compete against the Purdue Boilermakers,” said USI Head Coach Rodney Watson. “They return a veteran team, including future NBA players Caleb Swanigan and Isaac Haas.
“This will be the start of an extremely demanding November schedule that contains the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Ford Center and the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at the University of Indianapolis,” continued Watson. “Our guys are on campus this summer getting ready for the upcoming season and we are excited for this challenge. All of this prepares us for the GLVC and beyond.”
The Screaming Eagles, who were 19-11 overall in 2015-16 and advanced to the GLVC Tournament after posting a 10-8 conference mark, are led by returning senior guard/forward Jeril Taylor (Louisville, Kentucky), who averaged 16.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.
USI also will feature senior guard Bobo Drummond (Peoria, Illinois), an All-GLVC performer who averaged 13.2 points and 3.4 assists per game, and sophomore guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana), the 2016 GLVC Freshman of the Year who averaged 14.2 points per contest.
Purdue is coming off a 26-9 season and was one of 10 teams nationally to be ranked the top 25 of the NCAA Division I throughout the entirety of 2015-16. The Boilermakers finished tied for third in the Big Ten Conference with a 12-6 record.
The USI-Purdue exhibition contest features a rematch of the 2015 IHSAA Class 4A championship game, which featured Evansville Reitz High School, led by Stein and USI sophomore forward Jacob Norman(Evansville, Indiana), and Fort Wayne Homestead High School, led by Purdue’s Swanigan.
“This is a great opportunity to play (Swanigan) once again,” said Stein, who outscored Swanigan in that 2015 championship game, 26-20. “He is a great player and it will be fun to match-up with him once again. I hope there is a great USI crowd there to support us against the Boilermakers.”
Norman echoed Stein thoughts by saying, “(Swanigan) is a really good player and I enjoy playing against the best. This game should be a lot of fun.”
The GLVC/GLIAC Challenge, which will feature USI against Ashland University and Lake Erie College, is slated for November 12-13, while the SCB Hall of Fame Classic, featuring the Eagles against Florida Southern College and Kentucky Wesleyan College, is scheduled for November 18-19.

The Arts Council announces winners of the 2016 Mayor’s Arts Awards
The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana announced the winner of the 2016 Mayor’s Arts Award and seven other arts awards at a press conference last week. The Arts Council’s annual Arts Awards honor individuals, groups, and institutions that have made significant contributions to the advancement of the arts in Evansville and the surrounding counties. The winners this year are as follows:

Marketing Tech Platform Commits to Indianapolis for Growth
Indianapolis – Sigstr, an email signature marketing platform, announced plans today to expand its operations in Indiana, investing $1.4 million to double its downtown footprint and creating up to 111 new jobs by 2020.
“Sigstr’s news that it is choosing Indianapolis to grow its tech platform and add more than 100 new jobs is the latest in a long line of great announcements from our state’s rapidly growing tech community,†said Governor Mike Pence. “With the hard work of companies like Sigstr, Salesforce and Determine – which is moving its headquarters here from Silicon Valley, Indiana is adding new technology jobs faster than the national average. Here in Indiana, entrepreneurs and innovators benefit from low costs, low taxes, reduced regulations and a highly-skilled workforce, making the Hoosier state the best place to start and grow a business.â€
The company, which allows businesses to market via employee emails, has doubled its revenue in the first quarter of this year and has more than doubled its customer base since December, growing from 90 to now 185 customers. To accommodate growing demand, the tech firm will double its office space on the 10th floor of the Circle Tower Building on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. The company has outgrown its current offices on Monument Circle and will expand to add another 4,000-square-foot space connected to its current office.
Sigstr is a portfolio company of High Alpha, an Indianapolis-based venture studio managed by former ExactTarget CEO Scott Dorsey. The company serves national and global clients including Indiana-based Angie’s List and Delta Faucet, Georgia-based SalesLoft, New York-based ReturnPath and Arrow Electronics and Switzerland-based Roche. Sigstr is led by Dan Hanrahan, a veteran of the marketing tech industry with experience in leadership roles at iGoDigital and ExactTarget.
“The decision to scale our business in Indianapolis is a huge part of our competitive advantage,†said Hanrahan, founder and chief executive officer of Sigstr. “I personally came up through iGoDigital and ExactTarget with amazing mentors and connections to some of the brightest, most accomplished people in marketing tech. Founded in 2015, Sigstr has hired 20 Hoosiers within the last year, including three this month. The company is currently hiring for account management, marketing and software engineering jobs, and plans to add 59 positions by the end of 2018. The city of Indianapolis supports the project in partnership with Develop Indy, a business unit of the Indy Chamber.

Indiana’s technology sector added jobs at a rate of 18 percent from 2012 to 2014, which is three times faster than the national average. Sigstr’s growth follows announcements within the last year from technology companies including Salesforce, Determine, Emarsys, Blue Horseshoe Solutions, Lumavate, PolicyStat, iLAB, Appirio, GyanSys, Rook Security and Eleven Fifty Consulting, which together are committing to create thousands of tech jobs in Central Indiana. According to TechPoint, technology jobs in Indiana pay an average salary of upwards of $75,000 a year.

AG Zoeller: Indiana E-book purchasers to receive $8.6 million from Apple price-fixing victory

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Hoosiers who purchased electronic books (E-books) from April 1, 2010 to May 21, 2012 should now be receiving account credits or checks totaling approximately $8.6 million, as a result of the successful prosecution of a price-fixing case against Apple, Inc. Credits range from $1.56 to $6.93. Apple paid $400 million in nationwide consumer compensation after the United States Supreme Court denied Apple’s request to review the decision of a lower court finding Apple had violated the antitrust laws. “Indiana and its partner states worked diligently to refund consumers negatively impacted by this price-fixing scheme,†Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said. “Attorneys general will continue to fight on behalf of the public to ensure this type of anti-consumer collusion is deterred in the future.†Indiana joined 33 states in investigating and prosecuting Apple for its participation in the conspiracy to artificially inflate E-book prices. In June 2013, the states, along with the United States Department of Justice, tried the case against Apple. In July 2013, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that Apple conspired with the following five major U.S. Publishers: Penguin Random House, Holtzbrinck Publishers LLC, Hachette Book Group, Inc., HarperCollins Publishers LLC and Simon & Schuster, Inc. In June 2015, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed that ruling. And in March 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Apple’s request to review the Second Circuit’s decision. Under a contingent settlement agreement between the states and Apple, the Supreme Court’s decision triggered Apple’s obligation to pay the maximum consumer compensation amount of $400 million. All five of the conspiring publishers settled prior to trial, paying a total of approximately $166 million in nationwide consumer compensation. Most of that money was distributed to consumers in March 2014. The distribution that began this week consists of the $400 million Apple payment and additional funds remaining from the publisher settlements. The $566 million total nationwide compensation to consumers is more than twice the estimated amount of actual damages. Indiana consumers account for approximately 2 percent of E-book purchasers nationwide, and thus are expected to receive approximately $8.6 million from this distribution, in addition to the $2.9 million already paid to Hoosiers. The amounts received by E-book purchasers will be based on the number of E-books purchased between April 1, 2010 and May 21, 2012. For each E-book that was a New York Times bestseller, consumers will receive $6.93. For all other E-books, the payment will be $1.57. Distribution process for E-book purchasers Distribution of the consumer payments began this week. Customers who purchased E-books through Sony or Google will receive checks in the mail. Customers who purchased E-books through Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, or Kobo will automatically receive credits in their accounts (unless they previously requested to receive checks). Customers receiving account credits should expect to receive an email this week or shortly thereafter, indicating that the credits are available in their accounts. Credits can be used to purchase anything sold by these retailers, not only E-books.
