It’s mildly irritating when Facebook tries to nudge me into tagging a photo of my wife’s sister as my wife or my son as myself, but there are much more ominous possibilities in the world of facial recognition software.

According to the Washington Post, an Israeli start-up company called Faception claims to be able to take one look at a person’s face, compare it to a database and deduce a whole slew of character traits, including whether the person is a potential terrorist.

Yes, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar was all “old school” when he observed “Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look”; but artificial intelligence is bringing snap judgments into the 21st century.

With 80 percent accuracy, Faception’s technology can purportedly identify everything from great poker players to extroverts, pedophiles, geniuses, white collar criminals, wimps who won’t sue Faception if they get beat up after being misidentified as one of the aforementioned groups, etc.

The main focus of Faception is on homeland security issues; but even there, effectiveness may be short-lived. The terrorists may figure ways around it. I understand ISIS is flooding the market with photos of jihadists on jowl-flapping roller coaster rides and urging its scientists to finalize new real life applications for advanced Wooly Willy technology.

Keenly aware of ethics concerns, a Faception spokesman assures us that the 15 different classifiers used by the company to produce its profiles will never be made available to the general public. I have my doubts. (“The secrets are guarded by a trusted employee — who, um, meets 14 of the 15 classifiers for being a member of WikiLeaks! Darn! Darn! Darn! Pay no attention to that massive data dump on the internet.”)

Imagine the societal upheaval if such information does go public, gets exploited by unregulated copycats and tempts individuals and institutions to abuse it.

Suddenly everyone will be muttering “Maybe you CAN judge a book by its cover,” “Better safe than sorry” and “Guilty until proven innocent.”

Romantic invitations will be rejected, job offers will be rescinded and adoptions will never take place. Even something as simple as a payday loan will be affected. (“Why do you REALLY need this loan? According to analysis of the surveillance camera photos, you probably need to establish a new identity after you mass murder my helpless family. Take your business somewhere else, sir! But please take a complimentary calendar, and a nail file for your 80 percent likelihood of having brittle nails.”)

Remember the 1980s Pantene “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” ad? Soon it could be “Don’t hate me because my symmetrical follicles indicate bouts of melancholy.”

The medical profession will never be the same, thanks to exchanges like the following:

“The facial swelling from your allergic reaction to bee stings may never fully subside.”

“I want a second opinion, doc.”

“Okay, and you’ll probably win the backgammon tournament while humming a creditable version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.”

I’m all for preventing another 9-11, but there’s still something easily skewed and downright creepy about the services offered by Faception.

I’m not sure I even want to live in a world where the inspirational words of Martin Luther King, Jr. have devolved into “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by whether their ears hang low and wobble to and fro.”

Memorializing Fallen Heroes

With Memorial Day approaching, we have the opportunity to reflect on those who sacrificed everything to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. While communities throughout the state will be celebrating Memorial Day in their own ways, it is important that we remember the true meaning of the holiday: to honor our service members who gave their last full measure of devotion to our nation.

Unfortunately, there are instances where Hoosier veterans pass away without living family members to make proper burial arrangements. To ensure these heroes receive a burial recognizing their commitment to our country, the General Assembly recently enacted a new law tasking the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs to work with veteran service organizations to establish a set of standards for the unclaimed remains of deceased veterans.

I also voted in favor of a law doubling the amount of money dedicated to funeral expenses for Indiana National Guard members who pass away in the line of duty.

There will never be enough that we can do to repay our veterans, but we are committed to continuing to find ways to show our appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifice to their country and all of us.

UE eliminated by Dallas Baptist

 TERRE HAUTE – After staving off elimination with a morning victory over Southern Illinois, the University of Evansville baseball team saw its season come to an end on Friday evening with a 13-6 loss to Dallas Baptist at Bob Warn Field.

“Our back was against the wall, and we showed a lot of character these last two days,” UE head coach Wes Carroll said. “I’m really proud of this team. We ran into an Omaha-caliber squad in Dallas Baptist today, but our seniors really performed all year for us, and I couldn’t be more proud of that group of guys.”

The Aces, who finish the year with a 29-27 overall record, fell behind early on a pair of home runs in the third inning from Tim Millard and Daniel Sweet, and Camden Duzenack’s two run blast an inning later highlighted a five-run frame for the Patriots (39-17) as they grabbed an 8-0 lead after four.

The Patriots went on to tack another score in the fifth before Trey Hair put the Aces on the board with a three-run shot to center in the bottom of the eighth. DBU would wipe it out in the ensuing half-inning with a four-run frame to make it 13-3.

Josh Jyawook rounded out the scoring with a three-run blast in what would prove his final collegiate at-bat in the ninth.

Earlier in the day, Austin Allinger tossed what he described as the best outing of his career, giving up four hits and a run over eight innings of work to help the Aces muzzle a Saluki team that handed them their first loss of the tournament earlier this week. Hair’s fifth-inning three-run blast was the difference as the Aces won 3-2

The loss to DBU comes after one of the more memorable postseason runs in school history. After dropping four conference series entering the week, the Aces reeled off back-to-back elimination game wins against Illinois State and Southern Illinois, becoming just the third team under the direction of Carroll to collect multiple postseason victories.

“Our seniors really gave it their all this season,” Carroll said. “When you judge classes, you try to determine whether this place is better off for having them here, and that is definitely true with these guys. This group really helped take this program forward. They were a big part of that dogpile in 2014, and to battle through some of the things they have and fight like that up here, I’m really proud of this club.”

Pence’s Empty Office

On Saturday, thousands of people from across the state flocked to Downtown Danville for the Mayberry in the Midwest Festival. This was great for Governor Mike Pence. He recently opened a campaign office on the corner where the event was taking place. As a candidate, one could not ask for better free exposure.
There was only one problem…no one was at his office. Even worse, there were no signs in the storefront window. There was not one worker passing out information. No promotion at all. Nothing to identify Pence, other than his name on the door. Unless passersby looked closely, the office resembled just another attorney on the Courthouse Square.
At a time where polling shows the governor in a very tight race, thousands of potential voters walked right past his door. Unfortunately, there was no one to seize the opportunity. I was broadcasting the event. I watched as other campaigns had volunteers walking the streets to promote their candidate.
Mistakes in May do not necessarily make or break a campaign, but a lack of discipline and organization throughout will. Pence’s campaign no-show at his office was just that. The race to elect Indiana’s next governor will be razor thin. Unforced errors will haunt both candidates. Pence has several built-in advantages. He needs to exploit them if he is to be victorious. One is volunteers and infrastructure, which failed on Saturday.
The visual of Pence’s empty office was striking. Many people commented. The fact the governor, who personally attended a grand opening for the office just a week ago (complete with a bus full of people to help celebrate), left it unattended, was inexcusable. I was at that event and interviewed Pence. There were placards and signs set up all over the office. Not only did someone remove them when he left, but did not take the effort to transfer them to the window which faces one of the town’s busiest streets. It also means there has likely been no promotion (completely free mind you) for over a week.
Much of politics is about impressions. Pence’s empty office left an awful one. His campaign’s lack of presence fed a narrative many hold of the governor: A guy more about fanfare and publicity than attention to detail which produces good public policy. At the office’s opening, many staffers were on hand, hours before his arrival. Nothing was out of place. Every detail perfectly attended to. After he left, the office apparently became out of sight, out of mind.
