Explore Evansville Releases Economic Impact Study of 2024 Solar Eclipse

Evansville, IN –  – Explore Evansville has announced the results of a comprehensive economic impact study conducted around the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, which highlights the significant contributions of eclipse tourism to the regional economy. The study, commissioned by Explore Evansville and executed by Rockport Analytics, focused on the counties of Posey, Gibson, Vanderburgh, and Warrick. This regional approach allowed for a thorough analysis of the economic benefits brought by the eclipse visitors to Southwest Indiana.
Study Highlights
•Study Period: The study covers the period from April 5-9, 2024.
•Visitor Volume: The total visitor volume during this period was 150,382.
•Visitor Lift: There was a significant visitor lift of 40,004, representing the additional visitors specifically due to the eclipse.
•Tourism Spending Lift: The total tourism spending lift amounted to $6.6 million, reflecting the additional expenditure generated by the influx of visitors.
•Direct Business Impact: The total direct business impact, identified as “economic impact” in the study, was $4.6 million. This figure represents the value added to the regional economy due to the increased tourism activity.
The study utilized a robust methodology, including geolocation and credit card spend data, lodging statistics, and tax data, to derive these figures. The IMPLAN economic model was employed to estimate the ripple effects of traveler spending through the state and regional economies, considering direct, indirect, and induced impacts.
While the study covers extensive data and economic analysis, it does not capture the unprecedented community collaboration, the perfect eclipse viewing weather, and the seamless execution of events and other planning without major incidents. These elements contributed immensely to the overall success and positive experience for visitors and residents alike.
The 2024 solar eclipse was a once-in-a-generation event, attracting visitors from across the state and beyond. The findings of this study underscore the substantial economic benefits that such unique events can bring to Indiana communities.

The House of Bread & Peace Officially Operating as a Program of ECHO Housing & Community Development

It is with great excitement that we announce that the House of Bread and Peace (The House) is now officially operating as a program under the umbrella of ECHO Housing and Community Development.

In January of 2024, the leadership of both organizations announced that they entered into an interim

management agreement so the House of Bread and Peace could continue to operate as it had been,

providing emergency shelter to women and children who are experiencing homelessness, while being

supported by ECHO Housing’s leadership and infrastructure.

This pivotal union allows ECHO Housing to provide services through the entire housing continuum –

from emergency shelter to permanent housing placement and ensures that The House continues to

operate as it always has in the Evansville community.

Since it’s opening in 1985, House of Bread and Peace and the legacy of Sister Joanna Trainer have

been providing a warm bed, hot food, and the opportunity for a new life to women and children in the

Evansville area. This deep-rooted legacy will remain unchanged in its current location, 250 E.

Chandler, and will maintain the same staffing 24/7. Any women and children seeking emergency

Phillips returns to Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters are excited to announce the acquisition of INF Dakota Phillips in a combination of roster moves.

Ahead of Wednesday’s game with the Joliet Slammers, the Otters acquired Phillips for future considerations. In a subsequent move, OF Blake Mozley has been placed on the inactive list.

“Dakota has always given his all to this organization,” Otters field manager Andy McCauley said. “We are excited to have him back in an Otters jersey.”

Phillips has long had success in Evansville, hitting for a career .266 average in an Otters jersey. Across those four seasons, he has recorded 72 doubles, 42 home runs and 188 RBIs – 74 of which came during last year’s campaign.

His career in Evansville has been so successful that he ranks in the top three in team history in career home runs, RBIs, doubles, total bases, sacrifice flies and walks. The now fifth-year Otter is also in the top five in career at bats and hits.

Phillips joins the team in Joliet this week and is active for tonight’s middle game with the Slammers. First pitch from Slammers Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

Otters blanked by Slammers in middle game

JOLIET, Ill. – The Evansville Otters were blanked on Wednesday night by the Joliet Slammers, dropping a 6-0 decision at Slammers Stadium.

The Slammers (22-25) jumped ahead early and never looked back. They were guided by solid pitching, as Geno Encina (2-1) earned the win. He tossed in seven shutout innings, allowing the Otters (18-29) to garner just one hit against him.

In the opening inning, two infield singles extended the frame. Then, a bases-clearing double to left-center field from Jonathan Sierra put the Slammers ahead 3-0.

The final runs of the game came in the fifth. Sierra conducted more damage to Tristan Harvin (2-3), tallying a two-RBI base hit to make it 5-0. The next batter notched another base hit to score the last run and knock the starter out of the contest.

Evansville set a season-low in hits, picking up two tonight from Jake Green and Delvin Zinn. The club had some hard hit balls, but could not get them to drop in their defeat.

Base runners were hard to come by as well, with Green and Mendham being the only men to be aboard multiple times.

Despite the setback, the Otters still have a chance to win the series on Independence Day tomorrow. They will face the Slammers one final time in the rubber match, with a 6:35 p.m. CT first pitch. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

The region’s largest July 4th celebration begins at 6 PM with children’s activities, food trucks, and fireworks at dusk
 
ANNOUNCEMENT – July 4, 2024: The Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District (EID) is organizing and hosting Fireworks on the Ohio Presented by Bally’s Evansville on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
The event will start at 6 PM with a record 25 food trucks opening along Riverside Drive (from Court to Cherry Street). Free activities will be featured at Riverside & Main, including face painting, yard games, a patriotic balloon arch for photo memories, and a special performance by the Boom Squad at 6:30 PM. The grand finale, Fireworks on the Ohio, will happen at dusk, approximately 9:15 PM.
The 17-minute fireworks show, consisting of over 1,600 shells, will illuminate our riverfront with a kaleidoscope of colors. The show will pay homage to America’s spirit, featuring a mix of patriotic favorites and pyrotechnic effects. All of our events are held rain or shine. If there is inclement weather, the show may be delayed, but it will take place on July 4th.
The event is funded by corporate sponsors, with Bally’s Evansville continuing as the presenting sponsor in 2024. Children under 18 should be supervised by an adult. Bags, containers, and packages are subject to search within the venue. The Evansville Police Department, Evansville Fire Department, and American Medical Response of Evansville are coordinating efforts to ensure a safe event. If guests see something that concerns them, they should notify an Evansville Police Department officer.
