Narcotics Arrests made by EVCJTF

On Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at approximately 6:00 a.m. the EPD SWAT team and officers of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Joint Task Force served a search warrant at 918 Covert Avenue that resulted in the arrest of four individuals.

The warrant was a result of a lengthy narcotics investigation where numerous controlled buys of narcotics had been made from 918 Covert. Detectives with the EVCJTF recovered heroin, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and 8 hand guns during the search and arrests.

Arrested:
Cody Oshea Hall-Johnson – 24 years old
Levi Quincy Grant – 37 years old
Eugene Berry Maxwell – 26 years old
James Latroy Mitchell – 36 years old

Johnson was charged with maintaining a common nuisance. Grant was charged with possession of marijuana. Johnson and Grant are being held in the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center.

Maxwell and Mitchell were taken into custody and being held on federal charges.

Early Morning Shooting Investigation

On Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at approximately 3:55 a.m. Central Dispatch received a call that a subject had been shot. One 911 caller reported hearing multiple shots in the area of the 1600 block of North 5th avenue and another caller stated that a subject had been shot in front of her residence on 5th Avenue.

Upon arriving, EPD officers found Frankie Pollard, Jr. with a gunshot wound to his hip. Pollard stated that he was walking to his apartment (1622 Dresden) when a gold colored Ford, Crown Victoria started to follow him. Pollard said that the occupants of the vehicle pulled up to him and began to fire a gun at him and he was struck in the hip.

Officers searched the area that was reported where the shooting occurred and could not find any shell casings, impact spots from the bullets, or blood. Pollard could not identify any of the suspects.

The motive of the shooting and who was responsible is unknown at this time. The investigation is ongoing and updates will be sent as they are developed.

OTTERS PITCHER SIGNED BY ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

The Evansville Otters played in a thrilling weekend doubleheader, winning both games and celebrating the 2006 Frontier League Championship team, but the big news of the weekend was that Otters starting pitcher, Max Duval, was signed Saturday by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Duval consistently pitched stellar performances for Evansville, finishing his Frontier League stint with a stat line of 43 innings pitched, 42 strikeouts, and 4.39 ERA in 7 games started. The Otters will lose their opening day starter, but can look forward to watching Duval pursue his dream in the Majors.

First Sergeant Trevor Helmer Reassigned to Evansville Post as District Investigative Commander

On Sunday, June 19, Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter reassigned First Sergeant Trevor Helmer to serve as the District Investigative Commander for the Jasper Post.

Helmer is a native of Evansville and a 1987 graduate of F.J. Reitz High School. He later attended Purdue University where he received a degree in Political Science and Law in Society. Helmer began his career in law enforcement in 1990 as a police officer with Purdue University Police.

Helmer graduated from Indiana State Police Academy in 1995 and was assigned to the Evansville District to primarily patrol Gibson County. Helmer transferred to the Jasper District in 1997, where he primarily patrolled Dubois County. In 2003, Helmer was promoted to the rank of Sergeant to serve as a district squad leader at the Evansville Post. Helmer was reassigned to the Jasper Post in 2012 as the Investigative Squad Leader until 2013, when he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and was assigned as the District Investigative Commander of the Jasper Post.

Helmer served on the ISP SCUBA team from 1999 to 2006 and on the Emergency Response Team from 2006 to 2009. His new job responsibilities will be identical to his current assignment.

First Sergeant Helmer and his wife, Tracy, reside in Newburgh with their two sons.

Gates open at 11 a.m (CT) each day during live racing. Post time 12:50 pm (CT). Both dirt and turf racing is conducted in the summer and the meet is annually highlighted by the Groupie Doll Stakes (GIII) August 6th, 2016.
We will race 30 days starting on Saturday, July 2nd, 2016 & ending on Labor Day, Monday, September 5th, 2016. We will run Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Holidays, Friday, July 4th & Monday, September 7th. Our first post begins at 12:50PM (Central Time).

First Lady Karen Pence Will Award $52,500 in Grants to 57 Organizations from Across Indiana

Indianapolis – On Tuesday morning, First Lady Karen Pence will host a reception at the Governor’s Residence for 57 organizations and charities that serve Hoosier families and children across Indiana. There, First Lady Karen Pence will award each organization with a check ranging from $500 to $1,000 in grant money from the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation.

First Lady Karen Pence started the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation in August of 2013 as a way to recognize and lift up organizations and charities across the state. At the inaugural First Lady’s Luncheon held in April 2014, the Foundation awarded its first major grant of $100,000 to the Art Therapy Program at Riley Hospital for Children.  The second year’s luncheon, the Foundation awarded the second major grant of $65,000 to Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, which supports food banks and food pantries in all 92 counties. Last year, the third year, $100,000 was awarded to Indiana Bicentennial Commission for interactive “Treasures of the Statehouse” display at the Indiana State Library

Throughout the year, the Foundation will award smaller grants to organizations across the state. This reception is the seventh of its kind.
