Governor Pence Spokeswoman Statement Following Court Ruling on HEA 1337

0

Indianapolis – In response to the U.S. District Court’s preliminary injunction issued today prohibiting the state from enforcing certain provisions of House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1337, Kara Brooks, spokeswoman for Governor Mike Pence, issued the following statement:

“While disappointed in today’s ruling, Governor Pence remains steadfast in his support for the unborn, especially those with disabilities. The Governor will continue to stand for the sanctity of human life in all stages, for the compassionate and safe treatment of women faced with an enormously difficult decision, and for the rights of citizens to determine appropriate medical safety standards and procedures through their elected representatives. While the judicial process continues, the Governor remains focused on growing the already robust Hoosier economy and providing a world class education for all our children.”

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that Small College Basketball announces the inaugural Hall of Fame Class of inductees into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame.

The 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. Fans may purchase tickets/tables to the Hall of Fame Induction through the following link, www.HoFClassic.com, or by calling 812-421-2212.

“It is an absolute thrill to announce the inaugural class for the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame,” said Hall of Fame and SCB Founder John McCarthy.  “This class represents the best of the best in the history of small college basketball, and it is with great pleasure that we announce this class.”

A pair of University of Evansville legends are in the inaugural class as former coaching legend Arad McCutchan and player Jerry Sloan are in the inaugural class.

Sloan was a three-time United Press International Small College All-American each year from 1963-65; he was also a two-time Associated Press Little College All-American as a junior and senior.  He was a member of Evansville’s 1964 and 1965 NCAA Championship Teams and was the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player in both seasons.

A member of the NCAA Elite Eight 50th Anniversary Team, he holds the NCAA Championship game rebounding mark with 25.  He scored 1,320 career points, an average of 15.7 per game.  He also averaged 12.4 rebounds per contest.  Sloan went on to play for the Chicago Bulls from 1965-76 where he was a 2-time NBA All-Star.  His #4 jersey was also retired by the Bulls.  He went onto a stellar coaching career where he retired as the winningest coach in the history of the NBA with 1,221 career wins.  He is ahead of Pat Riley, George Karl and Phil Jackson.  In 2009, Sloan was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Another member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and joining Sloan in the inaugural SCB class is Arad McCutchan.  The legend was the first small college coach inducted into the HOF.  He led the Purple Aces to five NCAA National Championships, including a perfect 29-0 season in 1964-65.

In his 31 seasons with the Purple Aces, McCutchan won 515 games while making 15 NCAA Tournament appearances and winning 10 regional championships.  The 2-time NCAA College Division Coach of the Year coached the United States Olympic Trial teams in 1960 and 1968.  At the time of his retirement, McCutchan joined John Wooden as the only two coaches in college basketball history to win at least five NCAA Championships.

CEO Title Becomes Official for Joe Wallace at CVEP

Joe Wallace becomes chief executive officer of the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership on July 1, after serving as “interim” CEO for 18 months, the board of directors announced today.

Wallace took the interim position in early 2015 and was immediately tasked with managing an overextended CVEP budget. “Without hesitation, Joe took charge of a very challenging financial and operational situation, implemented organization changes that improved both the financial position and work output to our investors and the community while displaying the organizational vision to lead CVEP as it attracts and grows local business and creates opportunity for employment for the people of the Coachella Valley,” said outgoing CVEP Chairman Rick Axelrod. “The CVEP Executive Committee was unanimous in its decision to install Joe as CVEP’s chief executive officer.”

Wallace, who joined CVEP in 2012 as managing director of the Palm Springs iHub, said, “It is with great enthusiasm for the future of the economy of the Coachella Valley that I accept this challenge,” Wallace says.

“As we advance our objectives to attract business, provide support to entrepreneurs and small businesses, and develop a workforce with skills aligned to the needs of the local market, focus, execution, and perseverance will be the keys to success. CVEP’s fantastic team is energized to make this one of the best places to live and prosper,” he adds.

While managing director of the Palm Springs iHub, Wallace attracted 44 companies to the business incubator and accelerator campus – all innovators in the fields of renewable energy, health and medicine, high tech, advanced manufacturing, and digital arts and media.

He also secured $1.8 million in local funding that lead to a federal EDA grant of $785,000 for the Accelerator Campus and an IMCP grant of $200,000. Through its IN2 and Rural Investment for Sustainable Economies (RISE) programs, Wells Fargo and the Wells Fargo Foundation awarded CVEP with more than $400,000 to date in grants to support clean technology innovation and small business development in the Coachella Valley and the High Desert. In addition, Wallace forged an intellectual property sharing alliance with the National Renewable Energy Labs.

Prior to joining CVEP, Wallace founded and served as president and CEO of the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville in Indiana, and has a long history of innovation and leadership, first as an engineer with RCA, Verbatim Corp., IBIS Systems, and Micropolis; later as an executive with Cambrian Systems Inc., and ALP Engineering Group; and Zygo Corp. Wallace holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and a ChD in engineering from UC Santa Barbara. He finished his undergraduate work at the University of Evansville in Indiana.

Breaking News: Judge Blocks Indiana Abortion Law

6

A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction blocking Indiana’s restrictive new abortion law from taking effect Friday.

Judge Tanya Walton Pratt issued a 31-page order in favor of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, which sought to block House Enrolled Act 1337.

The law signed by Gov. Mike Pence this year would have prohibited abortions because of genetic abnormality, race, sex or ancestry, and would mandate disposal of an aborted fetus only through burial or cremation. Before its passage, opponents warned the bill raised an unconstitutional burden to the right to abortion and that its enactment would be met with a federal lawsuit.

Pratt wrote Planned Parenthood “has clearly demonstrated that the anti-discrimination provisions and the information dissemination provision should be enjoined pending resolution of this litigation. It is likely to succeed on the merits of its challenges to these provisions as the anti-discrimination provisions directly contravene well-established law that precludes a state from prohibiting a woman from electing to have an abortion prior to fetal viability. Similarly, the information dissemination provision is likely unconstitutional as it requires abortion providers to convey false information regarding the anti-discrimination provisions to their patients. PPINK faces irreparable harm of a significantly greater magnitude if these provisions are not enjoined than that faced by the State.

“Second, PPINK has persuasively shown that the fetal tissue disposition provisions do not further a legitimate state interest and thus are likely unconstitutional. This, when combined with the fact that the balance of harms weighs slightly in PPINK’s favor, leads to the conclusion that PPINK is also entitled to an injunction with respect to these provisions.”

TEAM EFFORT LEADS TO OTTERS WIN

0

The Evansville Otters emerged victorious by a score of 8-1 against the Windy City Thunderbolts on Wednesday night at Bosse Field. Evansville managed to pound out thirteen hits offensively, while showcasing dominant pitching for the second straight evening. Astonishingly, the Otters pitching didn’t get off to a good start after Evansville right-hander, Preston Olson, was yanked after just one inning pitched. The Thunderbolts snatched an early 1-0 lead in the first following an RBI double to the deepest part of the ballpark. However, it was all Otters after that brief hiccup as Evansville would go on to tie the contest in the third behind a double by Julio Rodriguez and an RBI groundout from player of the game, John Schultz. Schultz would finish the game 3-5, with the lone RBI. The runs would keep piling on in the fourth following four Otter hits and a three run outburst to bring the score to 4-1. After three consecutive men reached base, Evansville would tack on additional runs in the fifth when Nik Balog lofted a shallow fly ball to left that was misplayed by Windy City, and a bases juiced walk from Christopher Riopedre that bolstered the Otter lead 6-1. The Otters would pepper two more hits in the sixth to take a commanding 7-1 advantage. Evansville’s run parade would remarkably continue for the fifth straight inning succeeding a majestic double by Rodriguez that banged off of the left field wall with a runner on base. Both respective teams would go down quietly over the last two innings.

Looking ahead, Evansville will wrap up a three game home stand tomorrow against the Windy City Thunderbolts, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm CDT. Tickets are available at www.evansvilleotters.com or by calling 812-435-8686 ext 21.
