Katterhenry ties for MVC lead in record effort

Junior shot 5-under 67 on Monday

 CHICAGO – University of Evansville junior Kayla Katterhenry put forth one of the top efforts in Missouri Valley Conference Championship history, carding a 5-under 67 as she moved into a tie for the lead in the second round of the tournament at Harborside International Golf Center (Port Course) on Monday.

Katterhenry’s score tied the MVC Championship record, which was set by Southern Illinois player Alisha Matthews in 2012.  The 67 is also a new Purple Aces record.  It is one better than Crissy Higgins’ round of 68, which she accomplished in 2008.  Prior to today, Katterhenry’s lowest score was a 69 in 2014.

With the round, the Newburgh product moved into a tie for the championship lead.  She joins Wichita State’s Taryn Torgeson and Bradley’s Ally Scaccia with scores of 143 going into the final day.  All three are one under par going into the final round of 18.

Freshman Maria Pickens continued to play at her best, matching the top score of her collegiate career as she finished Monday’s round with a 74.  She stands in a tie for 10th with a 150.  Pickens notched a hole-in-one on the 13th hole in Sunday’s opening round.

Third on the team was Maggie Camp.  She recorded a 79 on Monday to stand with a 157 going into the final round of 18.  Camp is tied for 32nd.  Madison Chaney enters the final day with a 168 while Giulia Mallmann checks in at a 171.  Chaney and Mallmann are in 47th and 48th spots, respectively.

Evansville sits in a tie for 8th place with Illinois State.  Both schools have a 618. Missouri State is one ahead of the pair with a 617 while UNI is 6th with a 614.  Wichita State enters the final round with a 7 stroke lead over Indiana State.  The Shockers stand with a 586.

Tuesday’s final round of 18 is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.

 

Florey earns third MVC Newcomer of the Week honor

Florey hit three home runs at Illinois State

 ST. LOUIS – Another stellar week of Missouri Valley Conference action has seen University of Evansville freshman Morgan Florey earn her third MVC Newcomer of the Week award on Monday.

Florey had a memorable week for the Purple Aces both in the circle and at the plate.  Florey finished the week batting .429 with three hits in seven at-bats.  All three hits were home runs as she finished with 7 RBI and a slugging % of 1.714.  She also drew four walks while getting on base 63.6% of the time and scored four runs.

On the pitching side, Florey picked up two wins, going the distance in the Aces’ wins over Illinois State and stands at 11 wins on the season.  She finished with a 3.82 ERA in 14.2 innings of work.  She struck out 13 batters and walked just two.  Florey opened up the weekend series on Saturday, going 2-3 with five runs batted in and two home runs.  Throwing all seven innings, she gave up three earned runs while striking out six.

She was back at it once again on Sunday, throwing another complete game victory while going 1-1 at the plate with her third homer of the weekend.  She drove in two runs, scored twice and walked three times.

Tomorrow, Florey and the Aces are in action at Southern Illinois in a conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

7th Circuit: Horse racing venture was a business

An Indiana man who ran a horse racing business had his tax deficiencies for the 2005 and 2006 tax years voided by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals after Judge Richard Posner ripped apart an opinion by the U.S. Tax Court.

Merrill Roberts became interested in horse racing in 1999 and built a horse track on land he owned in Indianapolis. In 2005, he decided to build a bigger horse training facility, but built it in Mooresville after the city of Indianapolis opposed the construction. The U.S. Tax Court found in 2005 and 2006 he had erroneously deducted the expenses of his horse racing business because it was only a hobby during those years. The court assessed tax deficiencies of $89,710 for 2005 and $116,475 for 2006. In 2007, the court declared it a business, and it has been considered a business ever since.

Posner wrote the decision was “untenable; it amounts to saying that a business’ start-up costs are not deductible business expenses – that every business starts as a hobby and becomes a business only when it achieves a certain level of profitability.” Posner said Roberts’ business did not begin in 2007 but 2005, when he decided to build a large training facility.

He pointed out an inconsistency in the ruling when the Tax Court said Roberts did not purchase the Mooresville property to run a business, but said the business didn’t start until it began functioning at the property. “The judge seems not to have understood that the decision to build the facility, and its construction, are also indications of a profit motive.”

The Tax Court based its ruling off a “goofy regulation” Posner wrote, citing 26 C.F.R. Section 1.183-2, Treas. Reg Section 1.183-2: Activity Not Engaged in for Profit Defined.” The regulation says that the court can use another test as long as the court proves the other factors are insufficient.

However, even when using the test, which has nine factors, Roberts’ horse racing venture was a business. All nine factors supported or at least were neutral about his horse racing venture. “It may have been a fun business, but fun doesn’t covert a business to a hobby. If it did, Facebook would be a hobby, Microsoft and Apple would be hobbies, Amazon would be a hobby, etc. ad infinitum,” Posner wrote.

The case is Merrill C. Roberts v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue, 15-3396.

Governor Pence Honors Businesses for Contributions to State’s Economy & Hoosier Workforce

The Governor’s Century and Half Century Business Awards honor Hoosier businesses that have remained in operation for a minimum of 100 or 50 consecutive years and have also demonstrated a commitment to community service. More than 1,400 companies from across the state have been recognized during the 25-year history of the award.

Kathy Boyd, president and CEO of Boyd Electric, will be the featured presenter at Ivy Tech Community College Southwest’s 2016 School of Business Speaker Series on Wednesday, April 20 at 6 p.m. Boyd will present “Leading from the Heart.” The annual event brings notable speakers to the College to present about various topics relating to business and leadership. This year’s speaker series is sponsored by Banterra Bank. The event is free and open to the public.

Boyd is a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana with an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design

Technology and an Associate of Applied Science Electrician Apprenticeship. Boyd was selected as Outstanding Alumna for the Southwest Region in 2008 and the Outstanding Alumna for the State in 2010.

Also in 2010, she was the recipient of the Jefferson Award, a national program that recognizes outstanding community service and public service. The award was established by the American Institute for Public Service, an organization founded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft and Sam Beard in 1972.

Boyd was the recipient of her awards due to her work in a non-traditional career field, the fact that she is a respected small business owner, an active Labor Union member, and a community volunteer. She played a vital role in the successful construction of Holly’s House, a local advocacy center for victims of intimate crimes and domestic violence, donating her time and expertise to organize hundreds of volunteers that worked on the multimillion dollar project. She continues to donate her services to maintain Holly’s House, and currently serves as its board’s president.
