Governor Pence Statement on June Employment Report

Unemployment Drops 0.2 Percent To 4.8 Percent; Labor Force Hits Record Peak

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today issued the below statement following news that Indiana’s unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percent to 4.8 percent in June, marking a 3.6 percent drop since January 2013. The report, issued by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD), shows that Indiana’s labor force has increased by more than 190,000 since January 2013. June is the 12th consecutive month that Indiana has recorded private sector employment above the March 2000 peak, and Indiana’s labor force participation rate is nearly 3 percent higher than the national average (65.4 percent vs. 62.7 percent). Over the past three years, Indiana’s private sector has grown by 148,000 jobs.

“With more than 8,500 Hoosiers finding employment in June, and with a labor force participation rate nearly 3 percent higher than the national average, it’s clear that Indiana is on a roll,” said Governor Pence. “Our economic momentum is a testament to the hardworking Hoosiers in businesses large and small who are dedicated to starting and growing their companies in the Hoosier state. As we continue to foster an environment of growth and opportunity, our administration will continue to practice the pro-growth, low-regulation policies that help our economy grow.”

Background

The Indiana unemployment rate stands at 4.8 percent in June 2016. Indiana’s labor force increased 3,476 over the month, with an increase in employment of 8,594. Unemployment decreased by 5,118. Indiana’s total private employment grew by 36,300 over the year. Total private employment is now at 2,641,000. The highest levels of growth occurred in the following sectors: Leisure and Hospitality, Construction, Private Education and Health Services, and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities. Since July 2009, the highest point of unemployment for the state, Indiana’s private sector employment growth has surpassed the nation’s growth (13.7 percent vs. 12.8 percent). Total private employment for June stands at 28,400 above the March 2000 peak. Additionally, initial unemployment insurance claims for the first 28 weeks of 2016 are at their lowest point since 1987.

WHAT ARE WE DOING by Jim Redwine

Gavel Gamut By Jim Redwine

(Week of 25 July 2016)

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

You probably think this article is about the current presidential election. You would be incorrect. The title is literal. That is, what does the Posey Circuit Court do and who does it? Many of my friends ask me these questions. Actually, I do not have that many friends but the few I have often ask, “Do judges work?” One of my brothers, the one who practices law, answers this question thusly, “No!” But he was always prone to being overly dramatic. And his opinion is usually expressed right after he has lost a case. I do not feel any urge to disabuse him of his prejudice.

Instead I would like to share with you, Gentle Reader, an exposition of what really goes on in the Posey Circuit Court. Let’s start with one of the Court’s four court reporters, Liz Miller.

Elizabeth Ann (Dayton) Miller has been with the Court since January 2015. She is our newest member. While each court reporter may step in for the others when needed, each court reporter has particular areas of responsibility. Liz’s is court administration. She prepares and presents our budgets, claims and payroll to the Posey County Council, Board of Commissioners and the County Auditor. Liz also picks up the mail, prepares the next day’s files for court and transcribes testimony from court hearings.

Lizzie, as only her four siblings call her, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Her family moved to Posey County when she was twelve so her father could take the position of plant chemist with G.A.F. Liz and all of her siblings graduated from Mt. Vernon High School.

“Jeff Miller,  Liz’s husband of 34 years, is a native of Savah where, according to Liz, he plans to stay until he becomes one with the soil. Jeff and Liz are members of Mt. Vernon’s First Christian Church.”Liz has been actively and deeply involved in public service in Posey County for many years. She was Co-Chair of Relay for Life 2001–2005. Liz received the Relay for Life Courage award in 2006. She has chaired the Gateway for Cancer Research Longaberger Basket BINGO every year since 2004.

While Liz has numerous other public service accomplishments one of her proudest honors is being chosen one of Posey County’s Torchbearers for Indiana’s Bi-Centennial Torch Relay celebration. To commemorate 200 years of Indiana history Hoosier citizens from across our state have been nominated and selected to carry the Torch from our first State Capitol in Harrison County through all 92 counties.

Liz and her fellow Posey County honorees will receive the Torch at noon on September 11, 2016 in Mt. Vernon in front of the Hovey House. She will be one of the twenty Posey County citizens who are being honored for their public service. Liz is grateful but humbled by this recognition of her dedication to helping others and promoting Indiana’s long tradition of service and progress.

To those who may wonder what the court does, I submit Liz. Perhaps we can discuss other Court functions and functionaries later.

OTTERS LOSE RUBBER GAME

0

The Evansville Otters and the Lake Erie Crushers both brought their bats with them with both teams having 11 hits on the night. Only the Crushers were the only ones to bring the runs. The Lake Erie Crushers would beat the Otters 11 to 3.

Preston Olson was given the loss tonight to move his record to 3-2 on the season. Olson allowed six hits and four runs on the night, and did not have much help from his defense with the team allowing four errors on the night. Stetson Nelson was the winning pitcher moving his record to 1-1 with the Crushers. Nelson allowed ten hits and allowed three runs while on the mound.

The Otters brought the game within one in the seventh inning when Kaeo Aliviado scored Denzel Richardson and Chris Sweeney with a single to make it 4-3. In the ninth the Crushers would crush away the Otters scoring five runs to bring the game to 11-3, and Chandler Jagodzinski would come in the bottom of the ninth to shut the Otters down to close the game.

Next for the Otters (34-24) they go on the road to start a three game series against the Schaumburg Boomers (26-32). First game is Friday, July 22.

Ostrich, Camel Races Saturday

0

What: The ostrich and camel races are back Saturday at Ellis Park. One of the meet’s most

popular events, jockeys race ostriches and camels through the stretch of the track. Great video and photo opportunities – this event has never laid an egg!

When: Ostrich race is after the fifth race (post time: 2:43 p.m. Central). Camel race is after the seventh race (post time: 4:00). Note: This will delay the sixth race (3:30) and eighth (4:50) from their normal post times.

If you want photos and can’t make it, rest assured that Coady Photography will be all over it and I will be sending out photos from both races. If you aren’t on our regular email list, or if there is someone else at your station/paper/website who needs the photos, just have them email me at tracksidejennie@gmail.com.

Attached are photos from last year’s ostrich race. Credit is Coady Photography.

If you want to take pictures or video and do not currently have an Ellis media credential, please check in at the general offices near the main entrance. This is to make sure we know you’re here and get the access you need. If I’m not in the office, they’ll give you my phone number. Call me and I’ll be right there.
