Aces and Bears ready for 3-game set

The final weekend home series of the season is set to begin on Friday as the University of Evansville softball team welcomes Missouri State to Cooper Stadium for a 3-game series.

A schedule change has been made as the action begins on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. with the second game beginning at approximately 6 p.m.  On Saturday, the series finale will begin at 12 p.m.

Senior Day is set to take place following the second game on Friday as two student-athletes will be honored.  Pitcher Amanda Blankenship transferred to UE for the 2015 season and has pitched extremely well in her senior campaign.  Though not officially a senior, Danielle Freeman is set for her final home week.  She will complete her softball career this spring while concentrating on a return to swimming for the 2016-17 season.

The train kept on rolling this week for the Purple Aces as they swept a doubleheader at Southern Illinois before taking two out of three games against Indiana State.  Evansville has now won four conference series in a row for the first time since 2013.  The Aces are also 8-2 in their last 10 league games, another streak that was matched in 2013.  With 10 victories in league play, the Aces are having one of their best seasons over the last 12 years.  The program notched 11 wins in 2008 and 2013 and 12 in 2007.  A 13-12 mark in 2004 marked the last time UE finished conference play at .500 or above.

In the last eight MVC road contest, the Aces are an impressive 6-2, including 5-1 in their last six.  The last time UE has had a similar road streak came in 1999 and 2000.  Evansville won five of its last six league road games in 1999 and their streak extended to 6-2 in the first two MVC road games of the 2000 campaign.

Morgan Florey has come out on fire in her first season at UE.  The 4-time MVC Newcomer of the Week ranks 3rd in the MVC with an ERA of 2.01.  Her strikeout total of 189 is second in the league, just behind leader Nicole Newman of Drake.

Over the course of the last week, catcher Hayli Scott batted .400 as the Purple Aces went 4-1 in MVC play while moving up to 5th place in the conference standings.  She recorded a hit in 6 of her 15 at-bats, hitting four doubles while notching three runs and two RBIs

Missouri State comes to Evansville with a 17-27 mark and are 6-12 in conference play.  Olivia Roark is the top hitter for MSU, checking in at .378 while Madison Jones has better .317.  In the circle, Kaitlin Beason has notched an ERA of 3.56 in her 21 appearances.  Erin Struemph leads the Bears with 10 wins in her 31 games.  She has struck out 137 batters while notching an ERA of 3.95.

UE Tennis Heads To MVC Team Championships

University of Evansville women’s tennis (8-19, 0-7) heads back to Wichita State this weekend to take on the Shockers in the first round of the MVC Team Championships.  The Aces were in Wichita this past Saturday and were defeated at the hand of the Shockers by a score of 4-0.  The Aces come into the match as the 8th seed in the tournament.  The Shockers on the other hand come into the match as the #1 seed and are currently ranked 28th in the nation according to the ITA.

The MVC Team Championships will likely wrap up the season for the Aces.  This also means that it will likely be the final couple of matches for Aces Senior Marina Moreno.

Going into the match, the Aces found out Tuesday that Aces Junior Andjela Brguljan was named Academic All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Head Coach Jayson Wiseman said on Brguljan’s accomplishment, “We are exceptionally proud of Andjela, and she is deserving of this honor.  Andjela is a perfect example of what UE athletics is really all about; success on the playing field, even more successful in the classroom.  It’s nice to see the rest of the league recognizing her for her outstanding academic achievement.”

In the event that the Aces move past the Shockers in the first round they will play the winner of the match between Illinois State and Bradley.

Vulcan Plow Company

1

The Vulcan Plow Company, pictured here in the 1950s, was located at First and Ingle streets. The building was noteworthy for its metal statue of the ancient Roman god Vulcan, which had stood on top of the building since at least 1889. Originally called Heilman Plow Works, the firm was renamed Vulcan Plow Company; it became the leading producer of farm equipment in the Ohio Valley, with products shipped as far as South Africa. The factory was razed in the mid-1950s, but the statue, over nine feet in height, is now on display at the Evansville Museum.

AG Zoeller urges public to dispose of unused Rx meds during DEA Take-Back Day this Saturday

0

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is urging all Hoosiers to clean out their medicine cabinets Saturday and dispose of unused prescription medications to deter abuse, as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 30.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the majority of drug overdose deaths (more than six out of ten) involve prescription opioid painkillers or opioid-based heroin.

“There is no reason to leave powerful prescription drugs laying around where they are accessible to children, teens or anyone to whom the medications are not prescribed,” Zoeller said. “This accessibility contributes to Indiana’s addiction crisis. Doing your part to dispose of unneeded prescriptions is an easy, yet critical step to keep your family safe.”

All members of the public are invited to anonymously drop off any unneeded medications for safe disposal this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at available locations across the state. To find a location in your community, click here or call the DEA at 1.800.882.9539.

“In a recent study, the CDC reported people who are addicted to prescription opioid painkillers are 40 times more likely to be addicted to heroin. The prescription take-back day is an opportunity for people to help reduce the threat,” said DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Greg Westfall. “To prevent potential theft or misuse, take the time to clean out your medicine cabinet of unwanted or unused prescription drugs and dispose of them properly.”

The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Tomorrow, the Attorney General’s Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force is partnering with the Indiana State Police to host a prescription drug take-back event in Indianapolis. The Task Force will also be handing out free medication disposal bags that neutralize prescriptions, including controlled substances, on Saturday during Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana’s Community Shred It Day, which is also hosting a take-back site.

All but four of Indiana’s 92 counties now have permanent prescription drug take-back sites. For a list of permanent prescription drug take-back locations, visit www.BitterPill.in.gov and click “Medication Disposal.” Other safe disposal tips and information can be found here.

Indiana pharmacies interested in starting a take-back program can contact US Clean Water Organization to apply for a Yellow Jug Old Drugs starter kit, provided through a grant offered by Eli Lilly and Companies.

For more information on the Indiana Attorney General’s Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force and resources for the public on preventing Rx abuse, visit www.BitterPill.in.gov.

Eagles Trio Garner All-GLVC Honors

0

The Great Lakes Valley Conference coaches voted three University of Southern Indiana Men’s Tennis players to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Tennis Team. Senior Jack Joyce(Bournemouth, England), sophomore Samuel Kiladejo (London, England), and freshman James Hardiman (Blackwell Bristol, United Kingdom) were honored for their play during the 2015-16 season at Thursday night’s GLVC Tennis Awards Banquet. The three honorees is the most for the Screaming Eagles since 2012 when USI had three members of the all-conference team.

Joyce is earning All-Conference honors for the third time in his four-year career at USI after posting a 17-5 mark in singles play and a 16-6 record in doubles. The 2013 GLVC Freshman of the Year’s senior campaign was highlighted by an 11-match singles win streak and an 11-match doubles win streak over the same duration. Both streaks were snapped in the regular season finale. With 74 career singles wins (fifth in USI history) and 79 career doubles wins (tied for fifth in USI History), Joyce is currently third for combined career wins in the USI record book.

Kiladejo is the 15th USI men’s tennis player to earn multiple All-GLVC awards after receiving the same honor as a freshman after the 2014-15 season. The native of London, England, is currently ranked as the #14 singles player in the Midwest Region with a record of 14-9. In doubles play, Kiladejo has partnered with junior Paul Forichon (Nimes, France) to earn a number-six ranking in the Midwest Region with a 10-4 mark together. For the season, the sophomore is 15-7 with most matches coming at number-one doubles.

The fourth Eagle freshman to receive the honor since 2010, Hardiman finished the year with an undefeated, 12-0, combined record in conference matches. The freshman, currently, is in the middle of a 10-match singles win streak, while he has won his past 13 doubles matches, teaming with junior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia). During the final week of the regular season, Hardiman had four wins, highlighted by two singles wins over ranked region opponents, to win the final GLVC Player of the Week Award of the 2015-16 season.

USI (15-3, 5-1 GLVC) begins play in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tennis Tournament Friday morning. In the opening round, the Eagles will take on Rockhurst University for the second consecutive year at 9 a.m. at Plainfield East High School in Plainfield, Illinois
