OTTERS CLINCH DIVISIONAL SERIES, ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

The Evansville Otters used an eight-run second inning to power their way to the Frontier League Championship Series on Saturday night.

Chris Breen led off the top of the second inning with a double to deep center to get the big inning started. The next batter, Jeff Gardner, drew a walk and then Nik Balog struck out for the first out of the inning. Chris Sweeney grounded into a fielder’s choice to the Slammers’ third baseman, Jake Gronsky, but Sweeney was able to beat the throw to first base to prevent the double play and keep the inning alive. With runners at first and third base, John Schultz drew a walk to load the bases. That brought up Julio Rodriguez with two out in the inning. Rodriguez would reach on an infield single, allowing Breen to score the first run of the game. The two- out rally continued, as a wild pitch allowed Sweeney to score and then Rolando Gomez had a base hit up the middle, scoring Schultz and Rodriguez, making it a 4-0 lead.

Josh Allen drew a walk and after a first pitch ball to Christopher Riopedre, Joliet decided to make a pitching change. Slammers’ Starting Pitcher, Chris Rice, exited the game after just 1.2 innings pitched and Zach Hirsch took over. Riopedre worked a two-out walk against Hirsch, loading the bases and bringing up Breen for the second time in the inning. Breen worked the count full, and then put the exclamation point on the inning with a grand slam to deep left center field. The eight runs with two outs in the inning gave Preston Olson a comfortable lead as he took the mound for the bottom of the second inning.

Preston Olson took the ball on short rest for Evansville, and was effective for the Otters all night long. Joliet was threatening to score in the second inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, but Olson was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout swinging. Joliet would score on Olson in the third and fourth innings but the lead was still in tact at 8-2 heading into the fifth inning. Olson worked two more scoreless innings and exited after six full innings of work, in good position for the win.

Joliet would score two more runs in the seventh inning against Tyler Thompson to make it 8-5, but that was as close as the Slammers would get. Ken Frosch came on in the seventh to get the final out, before working a scoreless eighth inning as well. Randy McCurry closed it out in the ninth, securing the 8-5 victory for the Otters. The victory clinched the Divisional series, sending Evansville to the Frontier League Championship Series.

The Evansville Otters will face the River City Rascals in the Frontier League Championship Series, starting next week at Bosse Field. The Otters will have home-field advantage for the Championship Series, and will play two home games at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

According to the Washington Post Hillary Clinton: said  “Half of Trump supporters fit in ‘what I call the basket of deplorable.'”  “To just be grossly generalist, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorable,'”   Hillary Clinton said at this New York fundraiser on Sept. 9. : “They’re racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.”  “And unfortunately, there are people like that, and he has lifted them up.”   She also added “Now, some of those folks—they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.”

Clinton made these remarks the to applause and laughter from supporters at an “LGBT for Hillary” fundraiser Friday night in New York that also featured a performance by Barbra Streisand.

TRUMP OR HILLARY OR ?

It’s after Labor Day.

Now the presidential election is getting serious.

Now is when what the candidates say and do really counts. And now, incredibly, an already depressing campaign is getting worse every day.

No matter who wins in November, we’re going to end up with a president that half the country hates and the other half didn’t really want to win.

We have Hillary the Crooked still trying to lie her way out of her email crimes like a cheap lawyer.

We have Trump the Unqualified still talking in gibberish about grabbing Iraq’s oil, claiming he knows more about ISIS than the generals and trading air-kisses with Vladimir Putin.

Thursday morning we even had Johnson the Pot Head flying his Libertarian Party’s campaign plane into a cliff on “Morning Joe” with his already famous “What is Aleppo?” response.

So who’s left to vote for — Jill Stein, the mad doctor of the Green Party?

It’s sad to say, but Trump, for all his many, many flaws, is still our best choice in an election year that has produced the worst slate of candidates in recent history.

For both The Donald and The Hillary, one of whom will be the next president, this election is no longer about gaining voters for their candidacy. It’s all about suppressing the other guy’s voters.

Whoever can get the other guy’s supporters to stay home on Election Day wins.

If Trump is going to win in the end, it might have less to do with what he says or does than what Citizens United and Judicial Watch do.

The two conservative groups, which have used lawsuits and Freedom of Information requests to get the state department to release Clinton’s emails, have caused Hillary much more trouble than Trump or the mainstream media.

There will be more emails coming because of Citizens United and Judicial Watch, plus whatever October surprises WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have coming.

You have to applaud both groups for what they are doing. They are the greatest assets Trump has.

Every time they force an email dump the media are forced to report on it and more Americans hear about Hillary’s sloppy email habits and how crooked she is.

The email dumps might very well suppress the voting for Hillary, which, let’s face it, is the only way Trump can win.

If you’re looking for a good reason to vote for Trump, here’s one — unlike Barack Obama, who dislikes America and blames it for every ill known to mankind, Trump loves America.

Here’s another: Unlike Hillary, Trump is not a lifelong liar.

And here’s a third: We know what we’ll get with President Hillary —- four more years of sleazy Clinton Family values, four more years of Obama progressivism and two generations of liberal Supreme Court decisions.

With President Trump —- who has no ideology but narcissism —- at least there’s the hope that he’ll convert to a conservative and hire people who’ll reverse, repeal and repair the damage done by eight years of Obama.

Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

Among those who died were brave first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice helping fellow Americans. Let’s remember the role they played on Sept. 11, 2001, and continue honoring those who dedicate themselves to protecting us.

Results

  • General Fund revenues for August totaled $1,086.6 million, which is $25.7 million (2.3%) below estimate based on the December 17, 2015 Forecast but $7.5 million (0.7%) above revenue in August 2015.
  • Sales tax collections totaled $620.2 million for August, which is $20.6 million (3.2%) below the monthly estimate but $9.1 million (1.5%) above revenue in August 2015.
  • Individual income tax collections totaled $415.4 million for August, which is $0.6 million (0.1%) below the monthly estimate but $6.0 million (1.5%) above revenue in August 2015.
  • Corporate tax collections totaled $1.8 million for August, which is $0.5 million (41.3%) above the monthly estimate but $3.9 million (68.1%) below revenue in August 2015.
  • Riverboat wagering collections totaled $6.6 million for August, which is $6.0 million (47.6%) below the monthly estimate and $4.6 million (40.9%) below revenue in August 2015.
  • Racino wagering collections totaled $8.4 million for August, which is $1.0 million (13.3%) above the monthly estimate and $1.0 million (13.4%) above revenue in August 2015.

Commentary

Year-to-date General Fund collections total $2,152.1 million, which is $33.0 million (1.5%) below the December 2015 revenue forecast but $31.3 million (1.5%) above the prior fiscal year.

Seymour Lawyer Faces Felony Count, Disciplinary Case

A Seymour lawyer who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease faces a felony charge and a disciplinary complaint seeking his emergency suspension from the practice of law.

Stephen S. Pierson, 69, was charged in July with a single count of Level 6 felony aiding, inducing or causing welfare fraud. A Family and Social Services Administration investigation determined that Pierson had paid an office assistant in cash so that she could receive food stamps and Medicaid benefits for herself and/or her children. The worker, Teresa Cantu, also is charged with Level 6 felony welfare fraud and Level 6 felony perjury, according to Jackson County court records.

The charges allege the amount of the fraudulent benefits is $6,526.47. An FSSA investigator said witnesses said Pierson was paying Cantu at least $500 a week in cash that she failed to report in applying for benefits.

Last month, the Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission issued a petition for an emergency interim suspension of Pierson’s license, recommended based on a vote of three-quarters of the commission members, in part due to the criminal charges.

Additionally, the commission had been investigating grievances about Pierson for more than a year before filing a complaint. The commission’s complaint says Jackson Superior Judge Bruce MacTavish in June 2015 informed the commission that Pierson’s condition had left him impaired “to the extent that he cannot adequately represent his clients.”

Former employees in Pierson’s firm and those who shared space in the office allege that Pierson represented them in personal injury actions and failed to fully remit settlement proceeds. They also allege that Pierson distributed assets from an estate without authority from the court, and that Cantu, who is not a lawyer, decides which cases to take, sets fees, prepares pleadings without supervision, and receives or splits fees from personal injury cases.

Pierson denies the allegations or the commission’s characterization of witnesses’ allegations in a reply filed by his attorney, Don Lundberg. He moved that the petition be dismissed or a hearing ordered in a petition that characterized at least one witness as “a disgruntled former employee.”

He noted MacTavish’s letter from June 2015 wasn’t furnished to the Supreme Court until Aug. 10, and the accusations against Pierson are “based on at least two and probably three levels of hearsay – the Executive Secretary’s, unknown members of his staff, and various individuals who purportedly made statements to unidentified members of the Commission staff.”

Lundberg wrote that Pierson “cannot reasonably be expected to answer vague, second-hand hearsay allegations.”

The commission noted Pierson’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and said he asserted that his “symptoms have improved due to experimental medication he has received. The respondent’s statement is misleading, however, since he is part of a blind study in which some participants received actual medicine and some receive placebos. The respondent has no actual knowledge which group he is in.”

Pierson in his reply “denies the commission’s mischaracterizations of his representations about the improvements he has experienced and that have been documented in the study.” Another filing argues, “What is misleading is the Commission’s attempt to characterize as misleading (Pierson’s) factually true statement that his symptoms have improved during the drug study.”

Chief Justice Loretta Rush Wednesday appointed Robert C. Reiling as a hearing officer in the matter.
