Ahh Chocolate, Innovative Idea work for Saturday’s Groupie Doll

0
Stoneway Farm’s Ahh Chocolate, possible favorite for what shapes up as one of the deepest runnings ever of Ellis Park’s Grade 3 Groupie Doll, had her final major piece of training at Churchill Downs for the $100,000 stakes Monday. So did Godolphin Racing’s Iowa Distaff winner Innovative Idea, who will ship in from Arlington Park.
With exercise rider Joel Dominguez aboard, Ahh Chocolate worked a half-mile in 48 2/5 seconds, fourth-fastest of 49 works at the distance. She was timed galloping out five-eighths of a mile in 1:01 2/5.
“I thought she went fantastic,” said trainer Neil Howard. “But she’s pretty straight forward to train. On paper, this is a tough race. But it couldn’t set up better for her, plus we got lucky with a good post.”
Ahh Chocolate drew post 6, right in the middle of the capacity 12-horse field running a mile, with Improv needing a defection to get in off the “also-eligible” list. Howard believes Ahh Chocolate’s best races have come in larger fields because there’s often a legitimate pace to set up her preferred style.
“There’s enough speed in there,” he said. “She doesn’t really stalk but is a little bit farther back than stalking, in a perfect world.”
Ahh Chocolate was near the front amid a tepid pace in Churchill Downs’ Grade 2 Fleur de Lis on June 18, having the lead on the far turn but backing up to finish fifth of six, losing by 10 lengths to the very nice Paid Up Subscriber. But throwing out that race, Ahh Chocolate been very consistent, including taking Churchill’s Grade 2 Falls City last fall as a 3-year-old and the Grade 3 Allaire DuPont Distaff at Pimlico in May.
“You can look at her whole form and I think she’s maybe run one or two subpar races, which you have to give them that sometimes,” Howard said. “But she’s trained well for the race.”
“I thought her work was excellent,” said Terri Burch, racing manager for Stoneway Farm. “Joel never moved on her, and she looks to me like she’s going to be tough in the race. I’m pretty excited about it.”
With regular rider Brian Hernandez Jr. riding Saturday at Mountaineer, Ahh Chocolate will be ridden by Chris Landeros, who was up when the filly worked five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 last week.
Stoneway could cap a big week. The farm’s 5-year-old mare Stonetastic, a multiple graded-stakes winner for trainer Kelly Breen, rolled to a 6 3/4-length score in Monmouth’s Regret Stakes Saturday.
At Arlington Park, Innovative Idea worked five-eighths of a mile in a minute flat, the second-fastest of 19 moves at that distance. Trainer Eoin Harty said Innovative Idea needed to do something serious after a pair of leisurely works the prior two weeks.
“Sometimes things happen,” Harty said. “Last time she went to work and there was a loose horse and that screwed things up. The week before, the track was extremely hard so I told the guy ‘easy,’ and she went extremely easy. So she needed something decent, and it looks like she got it today.
“She’s always capable of that. Her last two works she was a victim of circumstances. She’s a very good work horse; very, very easy to train. Doesn’t cause any problems whatsoever. She goes to the track, does her thing and comes home. She’s not really a people horse, doesn’t require a lot of attention – just one of those horses you really love to have in your barn.”
Innovative Idea is 5-3-2 in 15 starts. The Iowa Distaff was her first stakes victory. Winning a graded stakes would be even bigger for the well-bred daughter of champion Bernardini.
“She’s a model of consistency,” Harty said. “She’s a tiny little filly, 15.2 (hands) at the most, 15.1 probably.”
In selecting the Groupie Doll, the graded status was a prime consideration, along with the fact that she wouldn’t be running into proven bears like Cavorting, Curalina, Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria and Forever Unbridled in the East and champions Beholder and Stellar Wind in the West.
“There were a bunch of two-turn distaff races over the course of the last week,” Harty said. “I picked what I considered the low-hanging fruit. It’s a full field, and not exactly low-hanging fruit but I thought it would be the easiest.”
Still, he said, “I was floored when I saw the nominations. And I was double-floored when I saw the entries and was scrambling around to find a jockey, because a lot of the jockeys are in West Virginia that day.”
Six-time Ellis riding champ Jon Court is named to ride Innovative Idea, but will ride Improv for trainer Rusty Arnold if that filly gets in. That is quite possible with Churchill Downs’ Roxelana winner Athena cross-entered in a sprint stakes at Mountaineer. The good thing is that Innovative Idea is an easy horse to ride, Harty said.
“There isn’t difficult bone in this filly’s body,” he said. “If we could get graded ‘black type’ (stakes placing) would be a super bonus on this filly, and everything after that would be gravy.”

Lanerie earns 4,000th victory

0

‘It’s special; I didn’t know how long my career was going to last’

Upon earning his 4,000th career victory Sunday at Ellis Park, jockey Corey Lanerie recalled thinking he’d never make it to 1,000.
“That was fun,” Lanerie, a two-time Ellis and 11-time Churchill Downs riding champion, said after guiding Fred Allor’s Crooked Stick to a three-quarters of a length score over favored Put Da Blame on Me in Ellis’ seventh, a mile allowance race. “It’s special. I didn’t know how long the career was going to last. Now to hit 4,000, it’s a milestone I never dreamed of years ago. But I’ve been blessed and things have been going well, and I hope to keep on trucking.
“My first thousand took a long time. After I lost the ‘bug’ (apprentice weight allowances), I think one year I won one or two races. I thought I’d have to find another job. Then I moved my tack to Sam Houston and got to ride a lot and learned a lot. Looking back at it now, I wasn’t very good. So I went down there and I learned and I worked my way back up. Just hard work and stuff, and it’s paid off. I moved to Kentucky, started doing good little by little and found myself on top – and now it’s hard to stay up there.”
Lanerie, who grew up in Louisiana as a third generation horseman, was painting a slightly distorted picture of his third year riding professionally, when he won 37 of 474 races in 1993. His worst year since then was his 116 wins in 1994. Lanerie’s mounts have accrued at least $1 million in purses every year since 1995, including a career-best $8.5 million in 2015. Win No. 3,000 came in 2011 at the Fair Grounds.
Crooked Stick is trained by Keeneland-based Alex Clarkson, who recalled the first time he rode Lanerie shortly after the jockey came to Kentucky in the late 1990s. That race, a $50,000 maiden-claiming event, also was at Ellis.
“It was my own filly. He was second,” Clarkson said. “… I said, ‘He’s going to be a really good rider, this guy.’
“Corey is a great rider. I just can’t get him, because he’s always riding for (Dale) Romans” and other big outfits. “I called his agent last week and said, ‘This is a good filly I’ve got.’ And he said, ‘No problem. I’ll ride her.’ So that was good. I said, ‘I need somebody who knows the track.’ My wife said, ‘He’s too far back.’ I said, ‘It’s 45 (seconds for the half-mile). He knows what he’s doing. And he did.”
Does he think Lanerie will get 5,000 wins?
“Oh yeah, why not?” Clarkson said. “He’s fit. And he’s clean, a family guy. No baggage. That luggage gets weary on you. But he’s great.”
As they often are, Lanerie’s wife (Shantel) and daughter (Brittlyn) were in the winner’s circle. Afterward, the Louisville resident signed programs for fans “CLan 4,000” amid the largest crowd of the meet, which jammed the track for the first Sunday Dollar Day.
Lanerie, who also won the sixth race on the Donald Hunt-trained Taliaferro County Sunday for No. 3,999, became the 70th jockey to reach 4,000. He ranks No. 46th in career earnings at more than $105.6 million.
In the $40,000 featured eighth race, Joe Rocco rode Mark Breen’s Annabelle to a length victory over 25-1 shot Miss Otis and jockey Declan Cannon. The Brad Cox-trained Annabelle ran 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:43.22 and paid $18.40 to win the second-level allowance race. Miss Otis rallied late to take second by a half-length over pacesetting Hone In and Francisco Torres, who were in a three-horse photo for third.
The 3-year-old Annabelle, a daughter of Uncle Mo, won two races last fall at Churchill Downs on dirt but hadn’t raced since finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Fair Grounds’ Jan. 16 Silverbulletday Stakes.
Racing at Ellis Park resumes Friday with a first post of 12:50 p.m. Central. From now on out, every Sunday will be Dollar Day.

IS IT TRUE AUGUST 1, 2016

60

IS IT TRUE it looks like our “INDY MOLES” came through when they informed us that State Auditor and Evansville native Suzanne Crouch would be selected as Eric Holcomb running mate?  …we must admit that it felt good that this “fledgling blog” upstaged the local main stream media about a week before her selection was make public?

IS IT TRUE the appointment of Evansville native and State Auditor as Eric Holcomb really has local Democratic party officials worried?  …people are saying by Suzanne Crouch being Eric Holcomb running mate has enhance Vanderburgh County chances of going Republican by a large percentage?  …It’s legend so goes Vanderburgh County so go the State?  …all we can say this is a major developing political story?

IS IT TRUE  Rep. Larry Bucshon has a problem with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump?  … last week Rep. Larry Bucshon stated he is going to vote for Donald Trump because he’s a Republican is almost laughtful? …Rep. .Bucshon stated that has some serious disagreements with some of the statements that Trump has made in the past. …we are hearing maybe Mr. Trump is also having problems with a few statements that Mr. Bucshon has made in the past?

IS IT TRUE we are hearing that several Evansville City Council members are biting at the bit on how to spend future “Riverboat Revenue” once the casino comes on land?  …we hope that our elected officials will realized that Tropicana has a local gaming competitor called ELLIS PARK located in Henderson, Ky. and they also have several regional (100 to 200 mile radius) gaming establishments to compete with?

IS IT TRUE conventional wisdom suggests when Tropicana goes on land the overall gross revenue will be increased only in the short term?  … we have been  told that City Council shouldn’t expect that much of a long term financial growth in Evansville once the Riverboat expansion is complete?

IS IT TRUE we are hearing the city administration has already received an advancement of $12.5  million dollars from Tropicana for this budget year to pay current bills?  …we are hearing that our tax and spend  Mayor is already planning to spend the majority of the projected income from Tropicana for 2017?  …in a positive light we are pleased to hear that 3rd Ward City Councilwoman Anna Hargis, CPA said “she would like the lease advancement money to go toward long-term investments”?  …we would like for Hargis to push to increase the balance of Evansville “RAINEY DAY FUND”?

IS IT TRUE its time that our local elected officials stop relying on money generated from Tropicana as their own political patronage slush fund?  …it’s also time that our elected officials to stop dogging Tropicana to give them advanced on projected revenue to off set their bad spending habits?

FOOTNOTE: Todays READERS POLL question is:  Do You feel its time for Anna Hargis CPA to speak out on budget shortfalls?

EDITORIAL: ITS TIME FOR ANNA HARGIS TO TAKE ON CITY BUDGET SHORTFALLS

ITS TIME FOR ANNA HARGIS TO TAKE ON CITY BUDGET SHORTFALLS

Things don’t seem quite right at our Civic Center these days, They’re especially out of kilter on alternating Mondays at City Council meetings, when 1st Ward Councilman Dan McGinn chairs the finance meetings.  The City Council majority is Democratic, but Council President Missy Mosby (D) chose a Republican retired attorney for that powerful position on the City Council. We wonder what led her to make that decision. Maybe it was to emphasize the “collaborative” nature of her relationship with Mayor Winnecke and his wife.  But to be totally honest we just he don’t understand her thinking in this matter .

When the public tunes in on those City Council meetings every other Monday, they see money shuffled between accounts to cover expenditures, with plans to replace the juggled funds from yet-to-be collected payments.  Whats amazing is that Finance Chairman Dan McGinn rarely questions City Controller Russ Lloyd’s when he states that everything will come out okay in the end.

We can’t help but remember McGinn’s tenure as Mesker Park Zoo Director.  Amazonia was his pet project, he assured us it would turn the zoo’s finances around if we support this project.  We been told that he produced a six-figure cost over-run on the project.  We are now told that the Zoo is losing hundred of thousands of dollars every year, due in large part of the unexpected annual upkeep of the Amazonia.  We now understand why many of our readers worry about Mr. McGinn’s financial judgement.

Also, we can’t help but wonder if Ms. Mosby felt the need to appoint a Republican to be Finance Chairman why didn’t she choose 3rd Ward Councilwomen Anna Hargis.  Mrs. Hargis is a CPA and during last election  she promised  the voters that she will serve as a financial watchdog for the taxpayers but so far has failed to deliver on that promise.  We think its time for Mrs.Hargis to start challenging the deficient spending practices of the Winnecke administration.

In the upcoming 2017 budget hearings we hope that Anna Hargis, CPA will start challenging the city deficient spending practices and do a better job in questioning the continued waste of our hard earned tax dollars.

Bottom line, we have become more concerned about the City’s finances with the passing of every City Council meeting, and urge all of our readers to keep a closer eye on what is being done with our hard earned tax dollars.

We have a gut feeling that the city finances are in bad shape.  We feel that City Council Finance Chairman Dan McGinn or City Controller Lloyd,  Jr may not be giving the taxpayers of this community a true and accurate picture of our financial condition maybe Anne Hargis, CPA will.

KWC Professor Receives Honor With A Special Scholarship

A longtime professor at Kentucky Wesleyan College is being honored with a special scholarship.

Dr. Diane Earle played piano at KWC’s Convocation Wednesday where her faculty and staff surprised her with a scholarship endowment. School officials say normally scholarships are endowed at retirement or at the event of a death. Earle says having a scholarship titled after her was a complete surprise.

Earle says, “It’s overwhelming. Usually these honors are for people who are retiring or have passed on. To be living is amazing and it’s overwhelming to me that all these people gave such a generous donation. A $25,000 endowed scholarship that is huge.”

Officials say $25,000 have been raised through community efforts for the scholarship. Earle says she is looking forward to seeing the students her scholarship is awarded to grow and learn.

U.S. Congressman Ed Whitfield Resigns

U.S. Congressman Ed Whitfield notified Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin that he will be giving up his seat September 6th. This resignation will call for a special election to fulfill the rest of Whitfield’s term that ends in January.

The special election will be during the general election November 8th between Republican James Comer and Democrat Sam Gaskins.

Bevin released the statement below following Whitfield’s resignation:“Both personally and on behalf of the Commonwealth, I want to thank Congressman Ed Whitfield for his many years of service to our state and our nation. He has served the people of Kentucky’s first district admirably, and we wish him all the very best in the years ahead. I will issue a proclamation declaring that the special election to fill this vacancy will be held on the same date and time as the General Election, which is November 8, 2016.”

FOOTNOTE: First elected in 1994, Whitfield announced his retirement last year in the midst of a House Ethics Committee investigation. The committee ultimately rebuked Whitfield for violating House rules, but said it was unintentional.
