GLVC Basketball Tournaments Return to Evansville in 2017
Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason basketball is returning to Evansville, Indiana, as the Ford Center has been selected to host the 2017 GLVC Basketball Men’s and Women’s Championship Tournaments. The joint announcement was made Thursday by the Conference office and the Evansville Sports Corporation.
The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds of the 20th annual GLVC Basketball Championship Tournaments will be held at the Ford Center on March 2-5, marking a return to the same site that hosted the GLVC’s postseason event in 2013 and 2014. Prior to that two-year stint, the tournaments had been hosted at Roberts Stadium in Evansville from 1999-2007.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to return to the Ford Center and the city that has a storied history of embracing both GLVC and NCAA Division II basketball,†said GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich. “The venue provides a grand stage to showcase both our sport and student-athletes. Furthermore, we are excited to strengthen our relationship with the Evansville Sports Corporation and look forward to welcoming the region’s passionate fans to the Ford Center in March.â€
The tournaments will determine the GLVC Champion, which will receive the league’s automatic berths to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.
The 2016 tournaments will feature 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams and be played over two weekends. On each side, four teams will earn first-round byes, while the remaining eight teams will open tournament play on campus Sunday, Feb. 26, with hopes of advancing to the quarterfinal action at the Ford Center.
“We’re extremely excited to partner once again with the University of Southern Indiana and the Ford Center to welcome the GLVC back to Evansville for some amazing postseason basketball,†said Evansville Sports Corporation executive director Jason Sands. “We love our basketball here in Evansville and we take great pride in providing an amazing student-athlete and fan experience and our new hotel and other downtown developments will only enhance that experience.â€
The Ford Center, which opened in November 2011, is the sixth venue to serve as a neutral site host for the GLVC Basketball Championship Tournaments. In addition to playing at Evansville’s Roberts Stadium, the GLVC has also held its postseason event at the TRAC on the campus of the University of Illinois Springfield in 2010, Maryville’s Moloney Arena in 2011, and the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois in 2012. The Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri hosted the events the past two years. The GLVC Basketball Tournaments were hosted on campus sites in 1998, 2008 and 2009.
Lewis University captured its sixth GLVC Men’s Basketball Championship last year and second in tournament play, while Bellarmine University claimed its fourth overall GLVC Women’s Championship and first in tournament action.
Tournament tickets prices will be announced at a later date.

BREAKING NEWS: Evansville Woman Arrested For Beating Man Into False Confession In Aleah Beckerle Case
Evansville Police arrested 51 year old DEBRA WOLLNER today for her role in the beating of a man who falsely told police he was involved in the disappearance of Aleah Beckerle. The victim, 41 year old James Martin, told police he was held against his will by at least two people for several hours on July 21st. During his confinement at an address in the 1100 block of N 3rd, Martin said WOLLNER repeatedly hit him with a metal pipe and that an unknown woman assaulted him with her hands and feet. Martin was told to “tell the truth†about Aleah’s disappearance. Martin agreed to lie to police in order to get the beating to stop. Martin was then driven to 403 E Iowa.
Someone in the home called 911 and said Martin was ready to confess his involvement in Aleah’s disappearance. Police arrived and heard WOLLNER, who is in a relationship with a family member of Aleah Beckerle , say “now tell them what you told meâ€. Police took Martin to headquarters to be interviewed.
During the interview, Martin made statements implicating himself, but the investigators quickly believed he was not giving the statement of his own free will. Police then learned of the beating and observed several injuries constant with his version of events. Investigators do not believed Martin had any involvement in the disappearance of Aleah Beckerle and that his statements were being made out of fear of further violence against him.
On July 30th, police were contacted by a person who had knowledge of the incident and also provided police with a video of the victim. In the video, the victim is seen bleeding from the head. A female voice is heard demanding information about Aleah. Later in the video, an unknown male voice is off camera talking to Martin about lying about who beat him.
Martin identified WOLLNER as the woman who was involved in the confinement and beating.
She is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail on the following charges:
Battery with a Deadly Weapon L3 Felony
Conspiracy to Commit Battery with a Deadly Weapon L5 Felony
Criminal Confinement L3 Felony (3 counts)
Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Confinement L3 Felony (3 counts)
The time and resources required to investigate this series of events took away from the efforts to find Aleah. Anyone who has any reason to believe someone they know may be involved in Aleah’s disappearance is asked to call police. Do not attempt to gather information on your own. Police are still investigating the beating and working to identify additional suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call EPD at 1-812-436-7979 or WeTip at 1-800-78-CRIME.

Overnight shooting injures juvenile
Evansville Police were called to the area of Lincoln and Bedford around 10:10pm on Wednesday night for a report of shots fired. Officers arrived and found a 16 year old male who had been shot in the shoulder. The victim told officers he did not know who shot him.
The juvenile was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
This shooting is in the same area where four people were injured by gunfire on Monday night. That shooting is believed to be gang related. Jarnell Carter had been charged with four counts of attempted murder I that case and has been waived to adult court. It is unclear at this time if the two incidents are connected.
Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to call EPD at 812-436-7979 or WeTip at 1-800-CRIME.
