Ultimately however, sweeping the 100 and 200 breaststroke events was not meant to be.

Two days after winning gold in the 100 breaststroke, the Reitz alum and Indiana sophomore finished seventh in her heat, 12th overall, in tonight’s 200 Breaststroke semifinals with a time of 2:24.59, which kept her out of the “Top 8” overall spots to qualify for Thursday’s finals.

King will cap off her Olympics debut this weekend, participating in the 4×100 meter Medley Relay.

Federal Court: Disbarred Lawyer Can’t Seek Judgeship

Federal Court: Disbarred Lawyer Can’t Seek Judgeship
Indiana/Lawyer by Dave Stafford-August 10, 2016

A disbarred Goshen lawyer who wanted to run for judge of Elkhart Circuit Court got nowhere trying to convince a federal judge he was wrongly denied the opportunity.

Joseph Lehman was disbarred in July for unauthorized practice of law following his suspension for two years in 2014 for violations including improperly managing his trust account, systemic negligence in representing clients, and disclosing confidential information through the improper disposal of closed case files.

Lehman said his application to be placed on the ballot was rejected by the Indiana Election Commission because he failed to provide a file-stamped statement of economic interest by the deadline. He asked the federal court to order the commission to place his name on the November ballot as the Democratic Party’s candidate “as no one else is now on the ballot for that position.” Lehman also accused at least one Republican candidate in the May primary of being among a group of four lawyers he accused of “pocketting (sic) forfeited bail money.”

“Lehman wants to be placed on the ballot as the Democratic candidate for Elkhart Circuit Court judge. But, to borrow from General Sherman, if nominated Lehman cannot run, and if elected he cannot serve,” District Judge Joseph S. Van Bokkelen wrote in an order issued Monday in the U.S. Court for the Northern District of Indiana, Hammond Division.

Van Bokkelen dismissed Lehman’s complaint as moot and denied his motion to proceed in his pro se complaint without pre-payment of fees and costs. He wrote that Lehman, who filed the complaint while he was suspended but before his disbarment, is ineligible to serve as a Circuit judge under Article 7, Section 7 of the Indiana Constitution, which requires a Circuit judge “shall have been duly admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of Indiana. …”

“Accordingly, Lehman can prove no set of facts in support of his claim that would entitle him to relief,” Van Bokkelen wrote in Joseph C. Lehman v. Individual members of the Indiana Electoral Commission, 3:16-CV-458. The judge dismissed the claim after screening for frivolousness or failing to state a claim upon which relief may be granted.

Elkhart attorney Michael Christofeno won a four-way Republican primary race for Circuit Court judge and will be the lone candidate on the November ballot. There were no Democratic candidates for the spot on the primary ballot, and the party slated no candidate prior to the deadline. Longtime Circuit Court Judge Terry Shewmaker, a Republican who has been on the bench since 1998, did not seek re-election.

DOLLY PACKS THE HOUSE AT THE FORD CENTER

Evansville, IN – Another busy night in Evansville with Dolly Parton taking the stage at 7:30 on Wednesday evening. This is the second concert Ford Center hosted this week and brought thousands of people to the downtown area.

Dolly brought her high energy and delightful personality all night. Between songs, she would talk to the crowd and give stories of the famous Jolene, how she grew up and her family. She sang all of her fan favorites and even new songs that will be on her album she releases on August 19.

“It’s great to see these legendary country stars draw attendance equal to so many of the new acts coming through the Ford Center,” stated Ford Center’s Executive Director, Scott Schoenike.

And just like Monday night during the Def Leppard concert, when it was time for Lilly King to swim, you saw community pride as crowds surrounded the televisions on the concourse level to cheer on our local Olympian.

Continuing Ford Center’s five year anniversary celebration is John Fogerty – August 27, Cirque Du Soleil: Toruk – September 2-4, Make America Rock Again – September 12th, WWE LIVE – September 17 and I Love the 90’s – September 22.

Consumer Warning Avoid Phone Scams By Recognizing These Area Codes

0

In an ongoing effort to protect Hoosiers from phone scams, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller urges people to recognize and avoid certain area codes and phone numbers that are commonly used by scammers.

Zoeller also reminds Indiana residents to sign up for the state Do Not Call list by visiting www.IndianaConsumer.com or by calling 1.888.834.9969 before the next quarterly deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Avoid phone scams by recognizing these recurring fraudulent phone numbers and area codes:

  • Non-existent area code, like “000” and “123”
If the number looks fake, chances are the call is probably a scam. Let a call from these area codes go unanswered.

  • Area code 202
If you are not expecting a call from our nation’s capital, then be wary when a Caller ID number starts with 202. The caller may be an imposter claiming to be an agent of the U.S. Treasury or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) demanding payment for past-due taxes. This is the most common scam reported to the AG’s Office this year. The IRS has asked consumers to report IRS imposter scams here, or by calling the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration Complaint Hotline at 1.800.366.4484.

  • Area code 876
Unless you have family or friends in Jamaica, be alert when you see area code 876 on your Caller ID. In the past year, Hoosiers have filed nearly 1,500 complaints about sweepstakes scam calls from this area code. The Federal Trade Commission has partnered with Jamaican law enforcement to fight telemarketing fraud. For more information about this scam, visit here.

  • Unfamiliar area code or number
Many people have stopped answering calls from unknown numbers in far-flung places. If you are not expecting a call from Bismark, North Dakota or Tacoma, Washington, it is probably best to ignore it.

  • Same area code and exchange as your number
If you receive a call from your own number, or a number that is only a couple of digits removed from your number, be very wary. Telemarketers are known to employ a type of spoofing known as “Caller ID mirroring,” which involves transmitting a number close to the number they are calling to get someone to pick up the phone. Once you answer, your number may go on a list of valid phone numbers sold to other telemarketers or scammers.

  • Generic names, like “Card Services” or “Home Security”
The Caller ID name can also provide a clue to a potential scam or telemarketing violation. A generic sounding name like “Card Services” informs consumers the call may be a robocall or a scam.

For more tips on avoiding phone scams, visit here. The next quarterly deadline to register cellular and landline residential phone numbers on the Do Not Call list is by midnight on Tuesday, Aug.16.
