JOJO GENTRY EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

Evansville’s Lilly King and Team USA bring home the gold in the 4×100 Medley Relay with a time of 3:53.13.

The Reitz alum concludes her participation in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics with two gold medals. She won the 100m Breaststroke and set an Olympic record Monday.

Team USA Swim coach Ray Looze called King’s second leg in the event “crucial” in an interview with 44Sports Thursday, which is why King sat out of the event’s qualifying heat Friday.

King will spend the remainder of the Olympics, which concludes August 21, with family and watching other events.

She’s going to stay through closing ceremonies because she had to not go to opening ceremonies,” Looze said. “She’s going to have a really full slate. I know she wants to see track and field and stuff like that so hopefully she will have some time with her parents to go see other sports.”

Mena, Torres Win Three Races Apiece

0
Shadow Rock Takes overnight Handicap;
Jet Away Sue Could Be Rising Star
Jockey Miguel Mena won three races on Saturday’s Ellis Park card, including taking the featured $42,000 The Coup overnight handicap on Shadow Rock by a head over Ohio shipper Woodland Walk, with Mongol Bull another head back in third.
Also pulling off a hat trick was Francisco Torres, who last Sunday had been in a scary mishap when his mount flipped and sent him to the hospital.
Mena won the second race on the Lynn Whiting-trained Jamaica Bet and the fourth on Sayler’s Creek for trainer Wes Hawley. Torres captured the first race on Burstall (trainer Angel Montano), the fifth on Warcraft (Bernie Flint) and the seventh on the promising 2-year-old filly Jet Away Sue for trainer Randy Morse.
Shadow Rock was a $62,500 claim two races earlier at Churchill Downs by trainer Mike Maker for owner Michael Hui. Well-traveled, the son of Distorted Humor shipped from Kentucky to Gulfstream Park, finishing second in a stakes July 2, then up to Saratoga and back to Kentucky for this race. The 6-year-old gelding now is 9-4-2 in 37 starts and has two wins and two seconds in four starts over the Ellis turf.
“It was a nice day. We had a bunch of live mounts today, starting with Lynn Whiting and Wes Hawley,” Mena said after Shadow Rock covered 5 1/2 furlongs on grass in 1:02.31, paying $7.80 as the second choice. “And this horse, Shadow Rock, he’s been here before and won. He likes the track and they said he was doing well. And he was rolling for home.
“The race was full of speed. He had a good trip. Just in the gate, the 7 and 10 came over on him, a little sandwich with us and we had to check a little bit. After that, it was just sweet. We split horses, didn’t have to go wide. The hole opened up and he was just running hard. He was the best horse today.”
Tom Durant’s favored Jet Away Sue, racing in blinkers for the first time, led all the way for a 2 1/4-length victory over Dynamic Union. Jet Away Sue, a daughter of Quality Road who cost $320,000 at the OBS March auction this year, ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.30 and paid $4.60 to win in the field of 11 two-year-old fillies.
“I was working her before she ever ran, and told Randy she probably was the best mare he’s had in a while,” Torres said. “She’s going to improve as she goes longer. She’s got that speed, that long steady pace. She’s one to keep an eye on. She’s going to go places.”
Jet Away Sue had raced once before, coming in second by 5 3/4 lengths June 17 at Churchill Downs. Though Morse hadn’t necessarily assumed she’d win that day at 4 1/2 furlongs, he said he expected her to finish better. The next day she had a 103 temperature, he said.
“She’s shown a lot of talent,” Morse said. “We paid a lot of money for her, she’s supposed to. I think she’s sure a quality filly. She always acted to me like she wants to go two turns. Hopefully she’ll go on and do big things.”
Of the blinkers, he said, “She’s one of those who kind of looks (around). It was more to keep her focused.”
Morse said that Jet Away Sue could race next in Churchill Downs’ $150,000 Pocahontas Stakes Sept. 17.
Torres returning for Saturday morning fan experience
There will be two more sessions of “Making of a Racehorse,” the Saturday morning fan experience staged by Ellis Park in conjunction with the Kentucky division of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. Torres will make a return appearance (he was the featured jockey the day before he got hurt). The free event is open to all ages and starts at 7:30 a.m. Central by the starting gate positioned in the mornings near the south end of Ellis’ parking lot by the Ohio River levee. The informal program, which lasts about 1 1/2 hours, includes a barn visit with trainer John Hancock, who this Saturday delighted kids in attendance by giving them a spin around the barn on a racetrack pony.

First Coalition For Court Access Meeting Wednesday

0

IL Staff for www.theindianalawyer.com

The Coalition for Court Access, created in May to coordinate Indiana Supreme Court programs that involve civil legal aid, will have its inaugural meeting Wednesday.

The CCA, consisting of 17 members, will work to provide a more focused and comprehensive organizational structure for the state’s civil legal aid programs, including pro bono efforts.

An order signed by Chief Justice Loretta Rush in May consolidated the three existing legal aid groups – the Indiana Pro Bono Commission, the Indiana Commission to Expand Access to Civil Legal Services and the Indiana Supreme Court Committee on Unrepresented Litigants – into this new coalition.

At the meeting, the group will discuss the responsibilities of those former groups and hold a consent vote on 2017 IOLTA grants. The coalition is also looking into forming possible working groups on pro bono and volunteer attorney recruitment, rural legal services, and funding, among other topics.

How often the group meets will be determined at the upcoming meeting.

Justice Steven David chairs the group, which he said will be able to do strategic planning, set long-term objectives and bring together various players in the legal community.

The coalition will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 317 (the Indiana Supreme Court courtroom) in the Statehouse.

A POLITICALLY INCORRECT LOOK AT JULY’S ‘STRONG’ LABOR REPORT

1

By Joe Guzzardi

Wall Street gushed when the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the July economy created 255,000 new jobs. The most effusive review may have come from the head of U.S. economics at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Quoted in a New York Times story, a representative said that the BLS data was “everything you could have asked for, maybe more.” The July data may look rosy to stock market players, but the underlying jobs picture is, in reality, frighteningly bad and offers scant hope for the near-term future.

Scrutinizing the types of jobs the economy created among the lucky 255,000 paints an entirely different picture than the one Wall Street touted. More than 200,000 of July’s new jobs are in the low-paying service sector, and many are involuntary temporary or part-time positions. About 75 percent of part-time workers live in poverty or close to it. Furthermore, the employment-age population grew 225,000 in July, so the low-paying jobs didn’t keep up with population growth.

The boom in service sector hiring accelerated in 2009. Joanie Courtney, senior vice president at Monster Worldwide, told a Fox News panel that since President Obama took office, more than 90 percent of all jobs created have been service-related. Over at the blog site Zero Hedge, there is an eye-popping take on the extent of the labor market’s true weakness: since 2014, half a million waiter and bartender jobs have been created, but no manufacturing jobs. Zero Hedge notes that since 2011, when the employment-population ratio for workers with less than a high school diploma bottomed, that sector in 2016 has regained its employment losses. But the employment-population ratio for high school or college graduates, eight of nine American adults, has been stagnant for four years.

The takeaway: the so-called jobs recovery has been propelled by cheap labor employees, some of whom have to work multiple jobs —- and are counted multiple times in the payroll BLS report —- to pay for basic household necessities.

Now for the maximum in political incorrectness, look at who’s getting those low-paying service jobs. The answer is found in the alternate household survey, and not the headline-making, buzz-creating payroll survey. The household survey includes demographic information on the foreign-born working population, and shows that from July 2015 to July 2016, the foreign-born labor force increased five times more than the American-born workforce.

More currently, in the last two months, immigrants have gained 647,000 jobs —- a 2.6 percent increase, while Americans workers have lost 160,000, a 0.1 percent loss. Going back to the Obama administration’s first days, immigrant employment has risen 4.6 times faster than American employment, and total employed immigrants now comprise 17 percent of the labor market versus 15 percent eight years ago.

These payroll and household statistics are taken directly from federal websites, and easily available to interested parties. For those who’ve been paying attention to auto-pilot immigration —- about one million work-authorized, permanent resident legal immigrants are added each year regardless of the nation’s economic conditions or needs —- American worker displacement doesn’t surprise. Assuming the million annual immigrants will keep coming, a safe bet, and that automation will play an increasingly prominent role in the leisure industry, especially in those popular bartending and table-waiting jobs, only the most optimistic can see a bright future for workers, save for those with advanced degrees in specialized fields.
