O’Brien: Boosting development, quality of life through strategic investment

0

It is no secret that the Hoosier businesses and workforce that make our state so great are what fuel Indiana’s economic engine – and right now it’s supercharged. From the small businesses on Main Street to the powerhouse Toyota plant, our area is burgeoning with opportunity. To make sure our region is well-positioned for continued growth, I recently supported expanding the state’s transformational investments into our communities.

Through the Indiana Regional Acceleration and Development Initiative, or READI 2.0, the state encouraged neighboring counties to team up and create a vision for the future to qualify for funding to help make it happen. The Southwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, which represents Vanderburgh, Warrick, Gibson and Posey counties, stepped up to the plate and recently received the maximum READI award of $45 million. The region is focused on growing our population, attracting new, high-paying job opportunities and skilled workers, improving quality of life and providing upward mobility to low-income Hoosiers.

In total, the state awarded 17 regions across the state a total of $500 million to continue to boost quality of life, quality of place and quality of opportunity. This program is expected to have a significant return on investment of nearly $11 billion in public, private and philanthropic matching funding. This successful program has been key in boosting economic development throughout our region.

In the last round of READI funding awarded to the southwest region, many projects we announced including expanding the nursing program at the University of Southern Indiana and Doctor of Clinical Psychology program at University of Evansville, increasing student housing and classroom space near the Evansville Medical District Campus, and supporting the IU School of Medicine Evansville’s efforts to address crisis‐level shortages in child mental health services and workforce needs. Other projects range from a transformational riverfront expansion and city block at 5th and Main in downtown Evansville to a dog park facility within Woodmere Park. In total, there have been 10 quality of life, six quality of place and seven quality of opportunity projects in our region.

The READI program represents a record state investment and commitment to our local communities, so that we remain future-focused and positioned for growth. It’s great to see our local leaders across our region worked together to create a data-driven, long-term plan that is certain to create even more opportunities for Hoosiers and businesses in our area. Improving economic development and quality of life are critical in attracting and retaining talent for our community, which in turn helps all our local businesses. As your state legislator, I am always looking for ways to continue these important initiatives so that Southwest Indiana remains a great place to live, work and raise a family. If you have ideas for ways to improve our community or new projects, please reach out by calling 317-232-9619 or by emailing h78@iga.in.gov.

Miroslaw Qualifies for Paris Olympics

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana swimming and diving junior and German swimmer Rafael Miroslaw has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Miroslaw swam a 1:46.11 to win the 200-meter freestyle at the TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio on April 10. His performance achieved an Olympic Qualification Time and came within the national qualification period (April 1-28), and Miroslaw is one of two individuals in the 200 free to meet German Swimming Federation’s selection policy for Paris 2024.

The German Swimming Federation will officially announce its Olympic team at a later date. Miroslaw will become the second German athlete, and first German swimmer, to represent Indiana University at an Olympics. Men’s basketball athlete Uwe Blab participated in the 1984 and 1992 games.

In 2023-24, Miroslaw completed his third year for the IU swim and dive program, helping the Hoosiers win their third-straight Big Ten Championships. Miroslaw is an 18-time All-American, two-time NCAA runner-up, 10-time Big Ten Champion and three-time first-team All-Big Ten honoree.

SHALLENBERGER EARNS SECOND MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK; BASEBALL ACES HEAD TO SEMO TUESDAY

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –  For the second time in the month of April, University of Evansville graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after slashing an unbelievable .692/1.308/.800 in four games last week for the Purple Aces.

Shallenberger went 9-for-13 on the week overall with two doubles, two home runs and four RBI.  He had a pair of games in which he reached base in all five trips to the plate, including going 4-for-4 with two home runs in Sunday’s series finale against Missouri State.  Overall, he reached base in 16 of his 20 trips to the plate, and did not go more than two trips to home plate without reaching base.

The monster week helped Shallenberger take over the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference in batting average (.389), slugging percentage (.720), on-base percentage (.535), and OPS (1.255).  He also ranks in the nation’s top 75 in all three main categories (average, on-base, and slugging), ranking as high as 12th nationally in on-base percentage at .535.  He has reached base safely in 41 of UE’s 43 games this season, and in 57 of his last 59 games overall dating back to last year.

Shallenberger and the Purple Aces will try to wrap up the month of April on a winning note on Tuesday night, as UE will travel southwest to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to battle the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks.  UE knocked off SEMO, 6-5, in extra innings in Evansville on March 13 thanks to a walk-off RBI single by junior outfielder Harrison Taubert in the 10th inning.  Taubert and Shallenberger were a part of a group of five Purple Aces who had multi-hit games that night, as UE pounded out 12 base hits in the win.

UE will bring a 24-19 overall record into Tuesday night’s game.  The Purple Aces are 13-3 in the month of April so far.  Evansville has won 15 of its last 19 games overall.

SEMO will bring a 22-22 overall record into Tuesday’s game after dropping two of three games to Morehead State over the weekend.  Senior infielder Ty Stauss currently leads the Redhawks in batting average at .336 with 12 doubles, a triple and eight home runs.  Senior infielder Ben Palmer and junior outfielder Michael Mugan lead the Redhawks in home runs with 12 and 10, respectively, and both homered against Evansville on March 13, with Mugan going a team-best 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.

Freshman left-hander Kevin Reed (3-1, 8.10 ERA) will get the start on Tuesday night for UE.  SEMO has not yet announced a starter for Tuesday night.  Tuesday’s game can be seen live on ESPN+.
