UE Professor Mark Valenzuela Receives Eykamp Prize

University of Evansville associate professor of civil engineering Mark Valenzuela has been awarded the University’s Eykamp Prize. This is the first year for the award, which was presented during UE’s Fall Conference on Tuesday, August 16.

The Eykamp Prize was established by Richard and Rita Eykamp to recognize extraordinary contributions made by UE faculty to the University. The Eykamps are long-time supporters of UE with a strong connection to the institution. Rita Eykamp attended UE and is a life trustee of the institution. Richard Eykamp is a graduate of UE.

Valenzuela earned his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University and his doctorate from Cornell University. He joined UE’s faculty in 1999.

During his time at the University, he has been dedicated to serving UE and its students

Under his leadership, UE entered its first regional concrete canoe competition in 2001. By 2005, the team was competing at the national level. UE has hosted the regional competition twice on campus; and is distinguished as the smallest university to ever host the national competition.

Well-respected and much loved by his students, Valenzuela serves not only as an advisor in academic matters but also offers them guidance in career planning and personal development.

The Alumni Association recognized him with the Outstanding Teacher Award in 2003 and 2013. He is the only member of the faculty to receive this honor twice.

Recently Valenzuela led the campus-wide effort to gain re-accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. This major commitment of time and energy was recognized when UE received an important confirmation from the commission that the University operates in an arena of excellence with a commitment to continuous improvement.

When presenting the prize, Richard Eykamp noted that, in addition to his impressive academic accomplishments, “Valenzuela is a role model who lives by a code of respect and service to others. He is a man of curiosity, personal discovery, and the highest ethical values. The University is honored by his accomplishments, his leadership, and his character.”

University of Evansville Announces Berger Awards for 2016

University of Evansville professors Ralph Larmann and Mari Plikuhn were honored recently with the Sadelle and Sydney Berger Awards for service and scholarly activity. The two were presented with the awards by Charlie Berger during UE’s Fall Conference.

Larmann, professor of art, was given the Berger Award for scholarly activity. He is very involved with the publication of educational texts, and is the co-writer of Gateways to Art, the best-selling art appreciation text in the United States. It has been adopted at approximately 400 universities and is required reading for many programs.

The London Times called the book’s third edition” one of the best books of 2015.” The London Times also featured it in a full-page review.

Larmann is also an accomplished artist. His work is often displayed in exhibitions at such prestigious galleries as the Swope Art Museum. His work “A Neighborhood of Citizens United” was accepted for exhibition in the Swope’s 69th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition and received a Nancy and Fred Nation Award of Recognition. In 2014 he exhibited as part of the ENW Exhibition that celebrated the opening of the renovated Evansville Museum.

Plikuhn, associate professor of sociology, was given the Berger Award for service. During her time at UE, she has worked tirelessly to serve the University and her department. She is Grand Marshall for UE’s commencement ceremonies, and co-chair of the Ceremonies Committee. She is also a member of the University’s Faculty Senate’s curriculum and athletic committees.

In addition, Plikuhn serves as faculty advisor for the Society of Social Research and the Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society for the Social Sciences. She is a department representative for UE’s Open House academic fairs and academic sessions. Plikuhn serves as an advisor for the Major Discovery Program and is part of the Student Success Team.

In 2012, Plikuhn was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the UE Alumni Association.  One of those nominating her for the honor noted that she “is willing to help students in any way possible.”

IS IT TRUE it looks like former Council President and Finance Chairman John Friend, CPA  projections that the City of Evansville shall be experiencing major budget problems starting in 2017 is spot on?  …we predict if any member of the main stream media would contact Mr. Friend he would be glad to tell them why?

IS IT TRUE  yesterday the Evansville Park and Recreation Director publicly stated  “the Mayor or City Council has nothing to do with the any future decision concerning the development of Robert Park is laughable ?  …doesn’t this guy realize that he serves at the pleasure of the Mayor?

IS IT TRUE the ad on an outside billboard located on St. Joe and Diamond Ave. is causing quite a stir?  …the ad on this billboard is sponsored by Hacienda Restaurant?  …the billboard states: “best Mexican food this side of the wall” ?  …some feel it makes reference to the “the wall between US and Mexico” and it really offend them?  …we wonder how they feel about this issue?

IS IT TRUE the burned out nightclub at Main and John streets will be razed today?   …we hear that our City officials are extremely pleased that this building is being razed because they believe this lot has a future value for the City ? …don’t be surprised to hear the Evansville DMD will offer to purchase this lot from the owner at a premium price for another “Quality of Life Project”?

IS IT TRUE the Evansville Police Department is going to charge anyone who want to access any future police body camera videos $150 per copy?  …we are hearing that some of our friends in the main stream media are concerned that the high cost of accessing video will deter people from requesting video camera footage?  …this is a developing story?

IS IT TRUE  that a budget request was given to Evansville City Council for $30,000  to promote 15 union firefighter’s to lieutenant rank?   …we wonder how Mosby and Weaver are going to handle this issue since that are the “political darlings” of the local unions?

IS IT TRUE  during a recent budget hearing the City Council liaison to the EFD DR. Dan Adams  publicly stated  “You don’t mess with police and fire; you and I know it”  during the discussion to increase fire department 2017 budget is puzzling?  …Councilman Dan Adams son is an employee of the Evansville Police department?  …we hope this doesn’t taint his judgement concerning  the Fire and Police Departments 2017 budget requests?

IS IT TRUE  the Metropolitan Evansville Transit System will reduce the following services for 2017?  …the services are: Sunday bus service; dropping a Howell route; contracting out the Northern Vanderburgh County  to AmeriQual route; to a private vendor, increasing  the 75 cents per ride fee to $1 and getting rid of free transfers tokens?  …don’t you just like when our elected officials forget that the poorest of our poor depend  on the  Metropolitan Evansville Transit System?  …we shall watch with interest  so see how Councilpersons Hargis, Mosby and Robinson vote on this issues since their Wards have many working poor living in their area?

INDIANAPOLIS – Short on money, ideas and time, today Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb and his Washington DC allies launched yet another false attack on John Gregg.

The 30-second ad, which does not provide a single citation or source for any of the accusations, is running statewide.

“Eric Holcomb has run for three different statewide offices in the last six months so you’d think he would be able to come up with a single idea, a policy proposal or something to indicate just how he would lead the state forward rather than relying on these stale and desperate attacks,” said Tim Henderson, Gregg for Governor campaign manager. “Sadly, he can’t because Eric Holcomb brings nothing new to the table. He’s just a taller version of Mike Pence and will continue the same failed economic policies that have left so many middle class Hoosier families behind.”

“I had represented a company in Knox County that had built a power plan. An attorney doing legal work out of Louisville had called and asked me if I’d help him do some of the zoning. I do a lot of zoning work; it’s a large percentage of my income from the Vincennes law office. The company would pay me but I worked with their independent attorney, who was a great guy to work with. I didn’t think anything of it. I did stuff for them off and on for a year and a half, on their power plant and related issues. HILLARY CLINTON Wait–Trump Is Only Ahead By Six Against Clinton…In Texas?

Texas…is a battleground state? The nightmare scenario that Republicans have been trying to fend off could be coming to fruition—which could spell electoral disaster for years to come. On the other hand, it could be that Donald Trump is an outlier, given that a) he’s not really a Republican and b) he’s become incredibly unappealing since the Republican National Convention. Trump seemed to have a path to victory. If the election were held in mid-July, he would have secured 285 electoral votes. That’s not the case anymore. Right now, if Trump were to win the remaining swing states, including Florida and Ohio, Clinton would still beat him. He’s losing—and losing big. Hence, why he decided to shake up his campaign this morning. How bad is it? He’s only leading Clinton by six points in the Lone Star State. It’s possible that deep-red Texas could be an area where Trump has to spend more money than usual, which diverts funds from his strategy to expand the electoral map, which has also failed miserably. He’s losing in New York by 30 points and decided to campaign in Connecticut, which was a colossal waste of time.

Public Policy Polling, a left-leaning outfit, conducted the poll, but the sample size didn’t skew to the Democrats, as with most of their work—this is a R+6 poll. Fifty-one percent of those polled voted for Mitt Romney in the last election, and 66 percent of those polled were over 46 years old; 28 percent were over 65, which is a demographic that skews to the right. Forty-eight percent described themselves as conservative.

Trump should be worrying about two things especially – the first being his tax returns.

Sixty-four percent felt that he should release his tax returns, while only 10 percent considered themselves undecided. That leaves little room for Trump to ensure a comfortable victory in the Lone Star State, possibly encouraging more Democrats to pour money into local races there to build on gains made by Clinton in the hopes of turning the state blue. No Democrat has been elected to a statewide office since 1994. That’s a long draught, but if Clinton has a strong showing in Texas—it could lead to a massive onslaught in a state that is the largest guaranteed bloc of electoral votes in national elections. At the same time, maybe Trump does well here, beats Clinton by 10+ points and kills off this dream of turning Texas blue. Wendy Davis’ 2015 drumming by Now-Gov. Greg Abbott shoved a knife through the heart of that project. In comparison, Romney beat Obama here 57/41 in 2012.

Another factor hamstringing Trump is that he isn’t popular in Texas. The silver lining with all of this is that Clinton is in all likelihood going to lose Texas. Texas Monthly said that the state isn’t turning blue anytime soon. I hope so, though this election could change that for the next cycle.

A Democratic victory in Texas this year remains a stretch but within the numbers there are signs of Democrats being positioned to become seriously competitive there in the years ahead. Trump’s lead is based entirely on his holding a 63-33 advantage among seniors. With voters under 65, Clinton leads him 49-45. And when you look just specifically at voters under 45, Clinton leads Trump 60-35. Older voters are overwhelmingly responsible for the Republican advantage in Texas, and generational change is likely to help Democrats become more competitive.
A big piece of that generational change is the increasing racial diversity of the electorate in Texas. Trump has a 69/25 lead with white voters but the reason the state’s so competitive overall is that among non-white voters Clinton has a 73-21 lead, including a 68-27 edge with the state’s booming Hispanic population.
Clinton’s unpopular in Texas, as you would expect, with a 36/59 favorability rating. But Trump’s not a whole lot better off with only 40% of voters seeing him favorably to 53% with a negative opinion. The tax return issue continues to plague Trump with 64% of voters thinking he needs to release his returns to only 25% who don’t think it’s necessary for him to. Even Trump’s supporters, by a 43/41 spread, think he should release them.

Air quality forecasts for Evansville and Vanderburgh County are provided as a public service.  They are best estimates of predicted pollution levels that can be used as a guide so people can modify their activities and reduce their exposure to air quality conditions that may affect their health.  The forecasts are routinely made available at least a day in advance, and are posted by 10:30 AM Evansville time on Monday (for Tuesday through Thursday) and Thursday (for Friday through Monday).  When atmospheric conditions are uncertain or favor pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, forecasts are made on a daily basis.

Ozone forecasts are available from mid-April through September 30th.  Fine particulate (PM2.5) forecasts are available year round.

Air Quality Action Days

Ozone Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when maximum ozone readings averaged over a period of eight hours are forecasted to reach 71 parts per billion (ppb), or unhealthy for sensitive groups on the USEPA Air Quality Index scale.

Particulate Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when PM2.5 readings averaged over the period of midnight to midnight are forecasted to reach 35 micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3).

Forecast statistics documenting the reliability of these air quality forecasts are compiled on a monthly, seasonal (May through September for ozone), and an annual basis.  Compilations of these statistics are reported in Vanderburgh County Health Department’s Annual Report and available on request.

Current conditions of OZONE and FINE PARTICULATE MATTER are available in near real-time on the Indiana Department of Environment Management’s website.

National and regional maps of current conditions are available through USEPA AIRNow.
