The University of Southern Indiana is excited to host Día de la Familia en USI, a campus visit experience designed and executed in Spanish for Spanish-speaking families, from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 19.

The event, organized in collaboration with HOLA and the Indiana Latino Institute, will offer a day filled with fun activities and valuable information about the USI enrollment process. Families will have the opportunity to connect with members of the University community and experience the beauty of the campus firsthand.

Troy Miller, Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management, says that USI is proud to work with community partners like HOLA and the Indiana Latino Institute to create pathways for families to engage with the University, better understand enrollment opportunities and see the possibilities available to students.

“At USI, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every student and family feels welcomed and supported. Día de la Familia en USI is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of our campus community and provide valuable information to Spanish-speaking families about accessing higher education,” says Miller. “We recognize the crucial role that family plays in supporting a college student’s journey, and through events like this, we aim to empower families to be active partners in their students’ success. Together, we can ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.”

During the event, families will be able to:

  • Learn about the admission process and financial aid
  • Receive a campus and housing tour
  • Engage with professors, staff and current students

“As a first-generation Latino student myself, I am proud to be part of an institution that values our diverse backgrounds and ensures families have the support and resources they need to help their students succeed,” says Dr. César D. Berríos Chavarría, Assistant Dean of Students. “Día de la Familia en USI is an event that allows families to not only learn about the University process but also feel a true sense of belonging within the campus community,”

USI strikes early but drops match against Tennessee Tech

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer dropped a 4-1 decision to Tennessee Tech University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field.

Following its first Ohio Valley Conference loss last Thursday, Southern Indiana (2-8-4, 1-2-2 OVC) entered Sunday looking to make an early statement. The Screaming Eagles did that and made some early noise with a goal five minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Pilar Torres switched the ball across to junior midfielder Emerson Grafton who directed it forward to junior forward Payton Seymour for the goal-scoring shot. The finish by Seymour was her second goal of the season.

However, as the clock approached the 25th minute, Tennessee Tech (4-7-4, 4-1-0) scored an equalizer to tie the game, 1-1. The Golden Eagles’ answer to USI’s goal came off a header on a corner kick. The Golden Eagles scored a second time nearly four minutes later to grab a 2-1 advantage and then tacked on another goal for a 3-1 lead in the 35th minute.

With less than five minutes left before halftime, USI senior Adriana Berruti ripped a shot off the crossbar for USI’s first shot since Seymour’s goal early in the opening half, but USI trailed 3-1 at the intermission.

Out of halftime, USI played an improved second half, especially on the defensive side. The Screaming Eagles held Tennessee Tech scoreless for most of the second half and challenged Tennessee Tech to difficult chances toward the goal. However, Tennessee Tech did score once more to make the score 4-1 with less than two minutes left.

USI had two good opportunities late in the second half. Junior defender Charli Grafton put a solid header off a corner kick just off the mark, and Emerson Grafton had a shot on goal that was saved.

Southern Indiana totaled a season-low five shots with two shots on goal. Tennessee Tech took 14 shots with nine on target. Corner kicks were nearly even at 8-7 in favor of USI.

Through Sunday’s slate of matches in the OVC, Southern Indiana is in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference alongside Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with five points.

Coming off fall break, the next match day in the Ohio Valley Conference is next Sunday, October 13. The Screaming Eagles will travel to Morehead State University next Sunday for a Noon (CT) kickoff. Match coverage links can be found at usiscreamingeagles.com.

Late goal from Velazquez helps Aces women’s soccer to a draw against Drake

The Purple Aces led the match in shots for the second straight game
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday with a 1-1 tie of the Drake Bulldogs.
The Purple Aces picked up another point on Saturday afternoon as junior forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) scored the tying goal in the 83rd minute. The goal was Velazquez second of the year as she now becomes the second UE player with multiple goals on the season. Senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) also added her third assist of 2024 to lead Evansville in points with five.
“We’ve been flat the last two games, so a result today was important,” said Head Coach Chris Pfau. “We’re still a young team in terms of how to win these games and playing with emotions. I thought Murray State and Missouri State were two of our better games and we got points out of that.
“Unfortunately, we kind of hit the wall against UNI. This wasn’t a great game for us but I told the team if we turn the corner we have to get points when we’re not at our best and it’s ugly. And I thought we did that today.
“Today we weren’t good, but we gutted it out. Myia [Danek] played absolutely brilliantly in goal and kept us in the game. And we got that goal in the end to tie and get a point to keep us in the running for the tournament.”
It was a slow start to Sunday’s match for the Aces as they didn’t connect on their first shot until the 13th minute. But Velazquez showed early that she’d be an offensive force for UE with the first shot for the team. Evansville put together a brief run of shots with three shots in five minutes. Drake responded with back-to-back shots right after. But the Aces retook control, forcing a save from the Bulldogs goalkeeper in the 24th minute.
Both teams fought for possession in the middle of the field until Drake had a three-shot run in the final 10 minutes of the match. UE goalkeeper Myia Danek (Laingsburg, Mich. / Laingsburg HS) made two saves to make it a 0-0 tie heading into the second half. But Evansville would be caught off guard at the start of the second as a Bulldog forward got one pass Danek into the right side of the net in the 46th minute.
While the Bulldogs were able to get off another shot a minute later, the Aces quickly returned to their offensive end. UE pushed the pace with four straight shots over 18 minutes midway through the half. Drake snuck in another shot before Evansville returned to the attack with shots from freshman forward Taylor Wehrer (Las Vegas / Desert Oasis HS) and junior forward Chrysta Vasquez (Las Vegas / Coronado HS).
It would be Velazquez though who found the back of the net for the Aces. In the 83rd minute Velazquez took the ball from a Bulldog defender up into the 12. She then passed over to Autenrieb on the right side of the penalty box, who quickly returned it to Velazquez at the six. Velazquez struck the ball with her right foot and blew it past Drake’s goalkeeper into the center of the net to tie the match up with only seven minutes left.
UE’s defense held strong in the match’s waning minutes, not allowing the Bulldogs another shot. Evansville picked up a point in the MVC standings for three points in conference action. Velazquez led the Aces on offense with three shots in 60 minutes of action. Sophomores Ella Hamner (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS) and Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) were the only other UE players with multiple shots taking two each.
Evansville will return to action on Thursday, October 10th at UIC. Kick-off from Chicago is set for 6 p.m.
