Dr. Bucshon Highlights Suicide Prevention Month

0
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this week to bring awareness to suicide and mental illness. September is designated as National Suicide Prevention Month.

“Mr. Speaker, suicide is the second leading cause of death for young Americans ages 10 to 24…As a father of four, all in this age group, I can’t tell you how heartbreaking it is that kids across the country feel hopeless and feel that suicide is their only option.”

Bucshon also highlighted his work on important legislation to address mental illness, which passed the House earlier this year.

“Tragically, we know that many of the individuals who experience suicidal thoughts suffer from some form of mental illness, but have not received proper treatment. Here in the House, we passed landmark legislation to overhaul our nation’s mental health treatment system to make sure these individuals have access to the care they need. And we need to see it across the finish line.”

ALLEN NAMED FRONTIER LEAGUE MVP

0

MCCURRY AND HARTSFIELD ALSO HONORED BY LEAGUE

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Evansville Otters second baseman Josh Allen has been voted as the Frontier League Most Valuable Player for the 2016 season, the league announced Thursday.

Allen, who is in his third season with the Otters, is hitting .350 this summer with 44 RBIs and nine home runs. His batting average is second in the Frontier League behind River City’s Josh Silver (.358).

Adding to an already impressive resume this year, Allen has broken the Otters’ single-season doubles record with 30. He has also stolen 28 bases for Evansville and reached base 57 times by drawing walks.

In the Otters’ playoff-clinching win over Southern Illinois last Sunday, Allen went 2 for 5 with two runs scored in the lopsided 10- 1 victory.

Before coming to Evansville, Allen played at the University of West Florida.

Allen wasn’t the only Otters’ player recognized by the league in postseason awards. Along with Allen, closer Randy McCurry was voted to the Postseason Frontier League All-Star team.

In his first season with the Otters, McCurry made 33 appearances out of the bullpen and saved a league-leading 22 games. His 2.25 ERA is third on Evansville’s roster and he also has 39 strikeouts.

McCurry is a product of Oklahoma State University and he was a 2013 draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 23rd round.

The league is also honoring former clubhouse manager Sam Hartsfield with the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence for his many years of service to the Evansville Otters. In honor of Hartsfield, the league will also be renaming the Clubhouse Manager of the Year award in his honor.

Hartsfield retired after the 2015 season from Otters but still attends games regularly.

The Evansville Otters host Frontier League Divisional playoff games Sept. 6-7 at historic Bosse Field. Tickets are available by calling the Otters’ front office at 812-435-8686 or by visiting evansvilleotters.com.

Evansville won the Frontier League title in 2006 and this is the ninth postseason trip overall for the Otters’ franchise.

BREAKING NEWS: Ramirez, Eagles Score Win In 2016 USI Men’s Soccer Debut

Ramirez, Eagles Score Win In 2016 USI Men’s Soccer Debut

Owensboro, Ky. – University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer freshman forward Eric Ramirez (Vincennes, Indiana) made his collegiate debut a memorable one by scoring twice in the Screaming Eagles’ season-opening 3-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday night in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles start a season 1-0 for the third-straight year and raised their record to 29-6-2 all-time versus the Panthers.

Ramirez scored his first collegiate goal and the posted the Eagles first tally of the season at the 21:36 mark. USI freshman midfielder Sean Rickey (Columbia, Illinois) started the play with a throw in to the center of the box where freshman midfielder Adam Newman (Marion, Illinois) headed the ball to Ramirez for the goal.

USI and Ramirez struck again nearly 13 minutes later to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage before halftime. Ramirez struck from five yards out as USI junior goalkeeper Adam Zehme (Orland Park, Illinois) and freshman defender Justin Brooks (Fishers, Indiana) keyed a break away down the right-hand side of the field.

In the second half, Newman put the Eagles up 3-0 when his cross deflected off of a KWC defender for his first collegiate goal. KWC would get onto the scoreboard at the 79:19 mark to close the gap to 3-1, but that would be as close as the Panthers would get in the final minutes.

Between the posts for the Eagles, Zehme posted his first victory of the season by allowing the one goal and making five saves. He faced only two shots in the first half and six blasts in the final 45 minutes.

The Eagles conclude the season opening road trip Monday when they travel to Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. The second match of the year is slated for 2 p.m. with live coverage available on GoUSIEagles.com.

USI slated to open the 2016 home and Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule September 9 at 7:30 p.m. when the Eagles host the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Eagles conclude the short two-match Home -stand September 11 at 2:30 p.m. with their annual “Gold Game” when they host Maryville University.

The “Gold Game” features the Eagles in gold jerseys to promote awareness and the search for a cure of pediatric cancers. Admission for the USI-Maryville match on September 11 is free of charge.
