AG Zoeller Commends Federal Grants To Combat Youth Substance Use In Indiana

Hancock, Johnson and Scott Counties receive funding to involve and engage community

SCOTTSBURG, IND. – As co-chair of Indiana’s Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller commends the recent announcement by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) to provide nearly $86 million in grants to fund support programs across the country to improve access to treatment for opioid use disorders, reduce opioid related deaths, and strengthen drug misuse prevention efforts.

In Indiana, three programs were awarded grants:

  • Scott County Partnership, Inc. on behalf of CEASe (Coalition to Eliminate the Abuse of  Substances) of Scott County
  • Neighborhoods Against Substance Abuse, an organization based in Greenfield
  • Upstream Prevention, Inc. on behalf of Empower Johnson County

“This is certainly a step in the right direction,” said Zoeller. “Indiana and other states have been calling on the federal government to help us respond to the overwhelming drug addiction crisis that is crossing state lines and impacting so many in our nation, and we’re finally seeing some activity. There is desperate need for a concerted effort on use prevention and addiction treatment strategies, as well as more resources for these programs.”

Zoeller has worked on both the state and federal levels to address drug abuse, championing legislation, advocating for funding and, most recently, establishing a statewide grant program to encourage and create an opportunity for first responders in Indiana to be trained and equipped with using the life-saving drug, naloxone.

On behalf of the Task Force, Zoeller has advocated for expanded availability and use of naloxone. In 2014, the Indiana General Assembly passed legislation that provides immunity from civil lawsuits to law enforcement and other first responders who administer naloxone to overdose victims in the course of their duties. In 2015, further legislation was passed that allows medical professionals to prescribe naloxone to family members and others who provide care or services to those at risk of overdose.

“There is no quick or simple fix to stopping drug abuse, but we believe we are beginning to make important progress to reverse this tragic trend,” said Zoeller.

Note: The Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force will host its annual Rx Symposium, October 13 and 14 in Indianapolis. Members of the public interested in administering naloxone or wanting more information on how to register for the symposium, visit here.

Katterhenry won Redbird Invitational

LOUIS– After winning the 8thtournament of her University of Evansville career on Monday at the Redbird Invitational, senior Kayla Katterhenry was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week.

In the season-opening Redbird Invitational, Katterhenry continued to add to her record-setting numbers. The Newburgh, Ind. product opened the tournament with a 7-under 65.

That broke her own school record of 67, which was set in April of 2016 at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Following a 75 in the second round, Katterhenry fired a 4-under 68 in Monday’s final round to defeat her nearest competition by five strokes.

Katterhenry and the Purple Aces are off this weekend and return to the course on Sept. 19 at the Loyola Invitational.

Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on Pentagon’s Political Strategy on Defense Bill

1

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement criticizing the Obama Administration’s political strategy to defeat the national defense bill as harmful to the country’s national security.

“It’s clear the Obama Administration is more concerned with planning partisan political fights than funding our military and operations critical to the security of this nation,” said Bucshon. “The details of this memo are troubling, below the dignity of our troops, and should not be tolerated by the American people.”

Earlier this week, a secret memo surfaced detailing a political strategy circulated among Pentagon officials to undermine legislation to fully fund our national defense, including bases like Crane in Southern Indiana and a pay raise for our troops.

Following the release of the memo, House Speaker Paul Ryan stated, “For this administration, it’s always politics first, even at the Pentagon. This memo details with relish a plan to use a presidential veto of a defense bill as a ‘weapon.’ It’s shameless, and it threatens more than five decades of bipartisan cooperation to enact a national defense bill for our troops. The men and women who defend our country deserve better.”

According to POLITICO, the news organization that first obtained the memo, “It [the memo] provides an unusually clear window into the tactics the Defense Department’s top officials are using in an increasingly partisan feud over their budget — particularly striking for an agency that seeks to avoid the perception of involvement in election-year politics.”

Furthermore, the Washington Examiner Editorial Board cautioned, “But it’s not as though the Obama administration is arguing in good faith for tighter controls on defense spending. Their only objection is that by funding defense in this way and not in another, Congress can indefinitely avoid a corresponding increase in non-defense spending. That’s what makes the Pentagon memo so appallingly cynical. If Democrats keep this up, many service members could end up going without their paychecks.”

ITT Educational Employees File Lawsuit Over Sudden Terminations

ITT Educational Employees File lawsuit Over Sudden Terminations

IBJ for www.theindianalawyer.com

Two employees who were terminated Tuesday as part of mass layoff by ITT Educational Services Inc. have filed a lawsuit claiming the Carmel-based firm violated federal law by failing to provide 60-days notice.

ITT Educational announced Tuesday morning that it would permanently “discontinue academic operations” at all ITT Technical Institute campuses.

Allen Federman, a business analyst at ITT Educational’s Carmel headquarters, and Steve Ryan, an instructor for ITT Technical Institutes at two locations in California, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Delaware the same day they were fired.

The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of the 8,000 employees who are losing their jobs as a result of ITT Educational’s decision to shut down more than 130 ITT Technical Institute campuses in 38 states.

The lawsuit claims ITT violated the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification Act, or WARN Act, which requires 60 days advance written notice in the case of mass layoffs or plant closings.

The law affects employers with more than 100 employees and plant locations (or business sites) with more than 50 workers. ITT Tech campuses with fewer than 50 employees might not be responsible for following the law.

The suit also claims the layoff violates California labor laws, which also require 60 days notice during mass layoffs. ITT Educational operated 15 ITT Tech campuses in the state.

The lawsuit seeks a judgment to each affected employee equal to the sum of their “unpaid wages, salary, commissions, bonuses, accrued holiday pay, accrued vacation pay, pension and 401(k) contributions and other ERISA benefits” that would have been paid over a 60-day period.

“We’re involved in a complicated process of closure of our academic institutions right now,” ITT spokeswoman Nicole Elam said in an email response to IBJ about the lawsuit. “All matters involving students and personnel are priorities.”

One of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs is Jack A. Raisner of Outten & Golden LLP of New York, who represented employees of Corinthian College, another for-profit education chain that closed down, in April 2015, after the government withdrew aid.

ITT’s closure followed years of scrutiny by the federal education department over the school’s recruiting methods and students’ educational performance, and recent actions that made it ineligible to accept new students who relied on student loans.

In its statement Tuesday morning, ITT called the federal sanctions “inappropriate and unconstitutional.”
