University of Southern Indiana Volleyball rallied from a one-set deficit, but could not repeat that effort a second time as it suffered a 25-15, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon.

After posting a negative .024 attacking percentage in a 10-point loss in the opener, the Screaming Eagles rebounded with a seven-point win in the second frame to even the match at a set apiece heading into the intermission.

Both teams used big runs to earn their victories in the first two stanzas. UIndy used a 12-3 stretch to break an 8-8 tie in the first set, while the Eagles went on an 11-5 push to build a commanding 17-11 lead in the second set.

USI (9-14, 3-8 GLVC) trailed 8-7 in the third frame when the Greyhounds went on a 9-3 run to put the set out of reach for the Eagles. USI had just eight kills and was limited to a .000 attacking percentage as it suffered the seven-point loss.

The Eagles jumped in front, 8-4, early in the fourth set, but a 4-0 UIndy rally erased the Eagles’ advantage.

UIndy (12-10, 7-4 GLVC), which hit .469 in the final stanza, used another 4-0 surge later in the frame to break a 14-14 stalemate. USI cut the deficit to a single tally with a 4-1 run, but the Greyhounds won six of the final eight rallies to secure the win.

Junior outside hitter Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) had nine kills to lead the Eagles, while freshman middle hitter Elexis Coleman(Joliet, Illinois) had eight kills and a .333 attacking percentage. Junior middle hitter Te’Ayla Whitfield (Fort Wayne, Indiana) added seven kills and six blocks, while senior setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) had 31 assists and 13 digs.

USI also got 12 digs from junior libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana), who became the fifth player in program history to surpass the 1,200-career dig plateau.

The Eagles return to action Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Missouri University of Science and Technology at the Physical Activities Center. USI will hold the drawing for the $500 campus store shopping spree between the second and third sets.

Seven All-Conference runners propelled No. 10 University of Southern Indiana Men’s Cross Country to their 12th-consecutive team title at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships on Saturday in Rolla, Missouri. With 24 conference titles overall, the Screaming Eagles own the most in GLVC history among all sports.

Falling sixteen seconds shy of the top spot, junior Bastian Grau (Höchstadt, Germany) lead the Eagles with a runner-up finish, while earning his first All-GLVC honor. Grau crossed the finish line with a time of 24 minutes, 18.18 seconds in his first GLVC Championship meet.

Senior Chase Broughton (Marengo, Indiana) captured a top five finish with a time of 24:41, good enough for fourth and his second All-GLVC award. Senior Noah Lutz (Evansville, Indiana) and 2015 GLVC Freshman of the Year Darin Lawrence (Indianapolis, Indiana) finished in sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 24:45 and 24:58. Lutz captured his third All-Conference honor, while Lawrence received his first.

Rounding out the top ten individual finishers were juniors James Cecil (Owensboro, Kentucky) and Cain Parker (Petersburg, Indiana) in ninth and 10th, respectively. The duo received their first All-GLVC awards with their finishes.

Nathan Hall (Springfield, Missouri) was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year for his efforts, a 13th place finish and a time of 25:26. He is the eighth GLVC Freshman of the Year for the USI men’s cross country team as Eagles captured the award for the second-consecutive year.

As a team, the Eagles won the Championship with 28 points, defeating the field by 38. Lewis University and Bellarmine University finished seconds and third with 66 and 75 points, respectively. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Saint Joseph’s College round out the top five.

USI Head Coach Mike Hillyard earned two more GLVC Coach of the Year honors, bringing his career total to a combined 24, after leading both the men’s and the women’s teams to GLVC Championships Saturday.

USI returns to action November 5 when it hosts the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championships at Angel Mounds.

Junior Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) captured the first Great Lakes Valley Conference Individual Championship for University of Southern Indiana Women’s Cross Country since 2011 to help the Screaming Eagles earn their sixth-consecutive conference title Saturday in Rolla, Missouri.

Roberts completed the six-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 36.03 seconds for her third consecutive All-GLVC honor. As the top finisher, Roberts earned the GLVC Runner of the Year award becoming the first USI women’s runner to earn the award since Jackie Henderson in 2011.

Just behind the top conference runner, senior Jessica Reeves (Midland, Michigan) earned a second-place finish with her time of 21:01 for her second-straight All-Conference honor.

Sophomore Hope Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) and junior Jessica Lincoln (Palatine, Illinois) also earned All-GLVC recognition with seventh and eighth-place finishes, respectively. Jones earned her first All-Conference nod with a time of 22:03, while Lincoln receives the award for the second time with a 22:08.

Rounding out the top seven runners for USI were senior Carly Whitesell (Zionsville) and junior Bryce Cutler (Benzonia, Michigan) who crossed the finish line in 17th and 24th, respectively.

As a team, the No. 8 Eagles finished with 28 points, 55 ahead of Bellarmine University, which was second with 83 points. With just one point separating the two, Lewis University and Wisconsin-Parkside finished with 87 and 88 points, respectively. Truman State University rounded out the top five with 158 points.

Staff with the Evansville Thunderbolts say picking up for a franchise that left overnight has been a unique challenge.

Strong efforts by both the men and the women’s squads earned swimming and diving a pair of wins tonight over Valparaiso.

Evansville’s men won by a final of 131-74 while the women’s team took the victory by a final of 152-33.

“I am very excited about the wins tonight, especially after the last few weeks of hard training,” head coach Rickey Perkins said.  “We had some great swims. It was great to compete against someone else besides ourselves.”

Senior Michaela Kent had a successful evening.  She took top honors in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.22 followed closely by teammates Emma Gowdy and Taylor Davidson for a sweep in the event.  Kent also teamed up with Alaina Sylvester, Kristen Myers, and Danielle Freeman for a victory in the 400 Medley Relay.

Senior Danielle Freeman also scored her share of points with victories in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle, with times of 24.12 and 53.78 respectively. Teammates Kent and freshman Emma Hennessy followed in second and third place for another event sweep in the 50. In the 100, freshman Kristy Kupfer edged out Crusader Paige Wright by .04 seconds to take second place with a time of 55.55

Freshman Aine Scholand picked up three wins of her own as well. Her time of 10:41.11 in the 1000 freestyle took first by a wide margin, with teammate Ashton Adams following in second with 11:00.76. Scholand went on to win the 500 freestyle as well with a 5:21.56, with Adams and sophomore Megan Schremp in second a third for yet another sweep. The 400 Freestyle Relay of Kupfer, Myers, Scholand, and Adams took the win as well in a final time of 3:43.38. In addition to both relays, Myers won her third event, the 400 IM, posting a 4:45.59.

Additional victories came for the women in the form of junior Kayla Aitken in the 100 Butterfly with a 1:01.90, and Alaina Sylvester in the 100 Breaststroke, touching in at a 1:10.96.

The men’s team matched the efforts of the women with a slew of victories of their own. Freshman Paul Cozzens picked up two individual wins in the 400 IM and the 100 Butterfly, clocking in at 4:16.55 and 53.02 respectively. He also combined his efforts with Dan O’Brien, Will Glasscock, and Matt Duke to win the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:35.46.

O’Brien, Glasscock, and Duke each took top honors as well. O’Brien edged out second place Crusader Max Penn in the 100 Backstroke with a final time of 54.12. Glasscock took a solid victory in the 100 breaststroke at a 1:01.58, and Duke took the 50 freestyle in a 22.18.

Freshman Brandt Hudson took all three of his races as well. The 1000 freestyle was won in a 10:10.12, and the 500 freestyle with 4:54.36. The Aces finished the meet with a final victory in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Hudson’s efforts, along with Everett Plocek, Jared Sutphin, and Blake Wheeler, clocked in at 3:14.80

The Aces are back in action at Boilermaker Aquatic Center tomorrow morning at noon EST.
