U OF E Volleyball Ready For Trip Through Illinois

Evansville faces Loyola and Bradley this weekend

It is back to the road for the Purple Aces volleyball team as they travel through the state of Illinois.  The road stretch begins on Friday at Loyola before the University of Evansville heads to Peoria to take on Bradley.  Both matches will be televised live on The Valley on ESPN3.

Missouri Valley Conference play began on Friday as the Aces had three matches in four days.  Evansville started conference play off with a hard-fought match against Drake that went five sets before the Bulldogs held on for the late win.  UE also faced UNI and Wichita State.  Last Friday’s match against Drake was an exciting night as the teams battled to five sets.  Several Aces set career marks in various categories including Rocio Fortuny, Jelena Merseli and Olivia Goldstein.

Evansville’s top offensive weapon this season has been Mildrelis Rodriguez, who leads the team with 2.88 kills per set.  She set career marks with 20 kills and 61 attempts against Jacksonville State two weeks ago.  That weekend, she posted 3.53 kills/set while hitting .240.  In the match against Drake, Rodriguez notched 16 kills in 58 attempts.  She has also been the Aces’ top offensive player in league play with 2.36 kills per frame.

Just behind Rodriguez on the offensive side has been Rocio Fortuny.  In the conference opener against the Bulldogs, Fortuny recorded a career-best 17 kills in 51 tries.  She also set her mark with 13 digs.  She has notched 105 kills on the season, an average of 2.10 per set.  Fortuny has also chipped in 0.44 blocks per game.

Libero Olivia Goldstein continues to settle into the position, leading the way for the team with 189 digs, an average of 3.20 per set.  Goldstein posted a career-best 22 against Drake and has had at least 12 digs in seven of the last eight matches.

Loyola comes into the weekend with a 6-9 record and split their opening weekend of conference play.  After dropping a 3-1 decision at Illinois State, the Ramblers quickly regrouped for a 3-2 win the next night at Indiana State in Terre Haute.  The highlight of the season so far was a 3-0 showing in the Deacon Classic in the first weekend of September when Loyola topped the College of Charleston, Davidson and Wake Forest.  Senior Morgan Reardon ranks fifth in the league with 3.37 kills per set.

Bradley enters play with a mark of 5-8 after falling in their first two conference matches last weekend against the Sycamores and Redbirds.  The Braves feature a solid offensive tandem as Erica Haslage is second in the MVC with 3.96 kills while Kelsey Cave is the #3 hitter in the league, checking in at .378.

CBS and MVC Announce Men’s Basketball Package

Aces to be featured on CBS Sports Network

ST. LOUIS– For the second consecutive year, CBS Sports Network will televise a package of Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball games, including the State Farm MVC Tournament semifinals as well as eight regular-season contests, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.

CBS Sports will continue to televise the title game of Arch Madness for a 12th consecutive year on March 5, 2017.

“As the lead-in to the final week of college men’s basketball, our tourney begins the final march to Selection Sunday, and we are grateful to have the increased visibility for Arch Madness on CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network,” said Elgin, who is in his 29th year with the Conference.

The University of Evansville is set to host Wichita State on January 17, 2017 on the CBS Sports Network.  There is also a chance that the Feb. 25 home contest against Indiana State could be picked up by the network as part of the wildcard weekend.

“CBS Sports’ commitment to the MVC brand paid immediate dividends in 2016. Northern Iowa took full advantage of the national stage, upsetting MVC regular-season champion Wichita State in overtime in the semifinals before edging Evansville on a buzzer-beater on CBS Sports in the finale to win the title,” Elgin added.

The 2017 regular-season package of league games on CBS Sports Network reflects the 2016 postseason success by The Valley, which saw Wichita State (versus Vanderbilt and Arizona) and UNI (against Texas) win games in the NCAA Tournament.

Of the seven pre-determined league match-ups, Wichita State will appear in three games, while UNI, Missouri State and Southern Illinois are slated for two appearances each.

The CBS Sports Network package, which features contests on Saturdays and select mid-week nights, begins on Jan. 7, as Southern Illinois visits Missouri State for a 3 p.m. Central telecast.

The men’s basketball regular-season package in January also showcases Wichita State at Evansville (Jan. 17), Illinois State at Bradley (Jan. 18), Southern Illinois at WSU (Jan. 24) and UNI at Drake (Jan. 28).

In the month of February, telecasts include Indiana State at UNI (Feb. 4) and Missouri State at Wichita State (Feb. 9).

The February lineup concludes on Saturday, Feb. 25, when ESPN and CBS Sports Network will utilize the Wildcard Selection process to choose from five games — Illinois State at UNI, Indiana State at Evansville, Wichita State at Missouri State, Loyola at Southern Illinois and Bradley at Drake.

The wildcard games selected to air on ESPN and CBS Sports Network will be announced on Friday, Feb. 10.

CBS Sports’ coverage of the 2017 State Farm MVC Men’s Basketball Championship — the league’s 27th consecutive tournament in St. Louis — will include the semifinal games on March 4 on CBS Sports Network.  The title contest on March 5 will air at 1 p.m. Central on CBS Sports.

There will also be additional non-conference exposure through Loyola’s participation in the Paradise Jam and Drake’s participation in the Great Alaska Shootout in November.

Should Loyola win its first-round game against Saint Joseph’s on Nov. 18, the Ramblers will meet the winner of Oral Roberts-Ole Miss on CBS Sports Network at 5 p.m. Central on Nov. 20.  They could also gain an appearance at 5 or 7:30 p.m. Central on Nov. 21.

Drake plays Iona on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. Central on CBS Sports Network.  Both semifinals on Nov. 25 and the championship game on Nov. 26 are being carried by CBS Sports Network.

The final non-conference contest for the league on CBS Sports Network will occur on Saturday, December 3 at 4 p.m. Central, when Wichita State visits Colorado State in a Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge game — one of nine such match-ups contested on that date.

The two leagues are in the second year of a four-year Challenge series, their second such term following a previous series played from 2009 to 2012.

Evansville, Indiana State, Southern Illinois and Wichita State were victorious in the 2015 Challenge.

IS IT TRUE SEPTEMBER 29, 2016

33

IT IS TRUE that the City-County Observer strongly supports the men and women of the Evansville Police and Fire Departments.  IT IS ALSO TRUE that they are doing an outstanding job of protecting the citizens of this community and we feel the city should provide them with a quality but affordable Health Care package!

IS IT TRUE that City of Evansville Employee Health Care program is self-insured?  …Has the city hired a consultant to help administer this program?  …no one on City Council or in the Winnecke Administration knows who the consultant is but also how much he is being paid?

IS IT TRUE that a few City of Evansville officials were warned by former Councilman and Finance Chairman John Friend CPA to be prepared to see many more million of dollars of overage in the 2016 City Employees Hospitalization Fund budget? …that Mayor Winnecke, City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr., Missy Mosby, Jonathan Weaver, Dan McGinn, Dr. Dan Adams, and Connie Robinson were all warned by former Councilman John Friend CPA that this financial shortfall monster was at their doorstep?

IS IT TRUE if our elected officials make any more cuts to the Fire and Police Departments budgets we may have to depend on the “Penguin” to help protect us?

IS IT TRUE that we have a financial crisis in the City of Evansville?  …as of June 30, 2016, the Hospitalization Fund was NEGATIVE for $7.5 million dollars?  … employees will use the Health Care system more during the later part of the year because of their deductibles being met?

IS IT TRUE that one year ago City Councilman Dan McGinn stated that Council Finance Chairman John Friend, CPA  actions were just political when he recommend much-needed budget cuts?  …we wonder what Mr. Friend would say about Council Finance Chairman Dan McGinn’s attempt to cut the 2017 City budget?

IS IT TRUE that in December of 2015 (without the approval of City Council) Mayor Winnecke quietly transferred $12.5 million from the Riverboat Fund revenue into the City of Evansville General Fund?

IS IT TRUE
if $12.5 million of Riverboat funds had not been transferred into the City of Evansville General Fund, the General Fund balance as of June 30, 2016 would have been OVER DRAFTED by $8.6 million?

IS IT TRUE
if City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr didn’t transfer $5 million dollars from the General Fund into the Hospitalization Fund during the second quarter of 2016 the Hospitalization Fund would be an additional $5 million dollars in the red?

IS IT TRUE that former Councilman John Friend, CPA has publicly stated that the Winnecke Administration were over spending about $1 million dollars per month?  …we really hope that Mr. Friend is totally wrong about this issue?

IS IT TRUE Dan McGinn declared that “the city financial deficit is much bigger, and expenses are much higher than we thought”?  …we wonder why City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr wasn’t honest and forthcoming with the information that the City has major deficit issues for 2016?  …if a Controller of a major Corporation withheld this kind of information from his bosses he would have been fired?

IS IT TRUE that Finance Chairman Dan McGinn recently stated, “So no one should be surprised. No one can call me a liar or a cheat or that I’m not transparent concerning 2017 budget issues to be discussed during Council meeting?  …we take Mr. McGinn’s word on this?  …its obvious that officials in the Winnecke Administration and a couple of Council members haven’t been transparent with the public about having advance knowledge of budget shortfalls for 2016?

IS IT TRUE that District 1 County Commissioner candidate Sean Selby should be humbled that fellow conservative and former U.S. Congressman John Hostettler decided to come out into the political limelight to publicly endorse and work for his election to the Vanderburgh County Commission?

FOOTNOTE:  Todays READERS POLL question is: Should City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr tell the public who is the consultant and what he is being paid to administer the Employees Health Care program?

Policemen and Firemen Came Out To Peacefully Object Against Mayor Winnecke’s 2017 Budget Proposal

2

The Traveling City Hall meeting on Wednesday at Washington Square Mall appeared to be quite a flop for the powers that be. As approximately 30-40 Department Heads sat around at tables configured in a large rectangle to answer questions from the citizens of Evansville, on average at any given point in time there were only about 4 people asking the Department Heads anything regarding the operations of the city.

On the other hand, there were several news crews, cameramen, and reporters there to document the event. But it was not the Traveling City Hall and its Department Heads about which the news crews were interested. Instead, the news crews were all over the three or four dozen policemen and firemen who came out in peaceful protest against Mayor Lloyd Winnecke’s 2017 Budget Proposal and Executive Director of H.R. Administrative Services’ George Fithian’s newly proposed insurance plans for city employees.

At Monday night’s City Council Meeting, a packed house revealed that there were a great number of city employees who were not happy with the changes to their insurance plans, which increased their premiums and increased their monthly payments.  Meanwhile, the Winnecke Administration intends to fund Mesker Zoo with a new penguin exhibit using millions of taxpayer dollars as the previous healthcare bills of city employees remains unpaid. The new insurance plans proposed by  the City Personnel Director George Within and Mayor Winnecke have increased city employee family insurance payments drastically. Some officers and firemen even stated that their payments have quadrupled.

One fireman said that this protest is nothing personal against the Mayor but we just don’t believe that the city has done its due diligence in finding a better option. We think the city has better options, and we are the people who risk our lives, have multiple exposures to carcinogens and getting shot at. We think we deserve a plan that’s not going to bankrupt our families and cause us to lose our homes.

A police officer stated that the penguin exhibit is pointless, especially for us because if they raise our insurance costs this much, we won’t even be able to take our children to the zoo the see the penguin display. He went on to say that it amazes him that if the city has a pet project they find a way to fund it, but when it comes to public safety the funds are just not there.

George Fithian, who proposed this new Health Care plan, first to the city employees and then publicly at the city council meeting Monday night, said Monday that he has been in his position with the city for 16 years. When questioned about the city’s Health Care fund being self-insured he stated it was self insured.   When asked what he knew if Old National Bank’s is involved with the City Employee Health insurance Program he said, “I don’t know nothin’.”  He also said that he doesn’t know anything about a Health Care Insurance Consultant hired by the city except that he pays the  premium when he gets a bill.   He went on to say that he just receives a paper on his desk fresh off the printer and signs the one that is best for the city employees. When asked a third time, “So you have no idea who the City’s Health Insurance Consultant is?   ” His answer was a simple, “No”.

When he realized that the interview was being recorded, Fithian quickly became angry and almost threatening, as if he was about to punch the cameraman for filming. Apparently, he didn’t want the people to know that he has no clue about the details regarding the City’s Health Care program.

Courts Rules Bevin Overstepped Authority in Appointing U of L Trustees

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin overstepped his authority in reorganizing the board of trustees at the University of Louisville, that is the ruling from a Franklin Circuit Court judge.

That ruling came down Wednesday and says Bevin “served as judge, jury and executioner of the U of L Board of Trustees.”

The judge also said Bevin side-stepped state law that says trustees can only be removed with just cause and through a hearing.

In June, Bevin dismantled the board and replaced it with 10 people he appointed.

The current board will stay on, until or unless Bevin appeals and wins in the state appeals court or supreme court.

There is no word whether that will happen.
