USI hits the road for GLVC 1st round

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team enters the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since 2012 when it hits the road to play Truman State University Sunday in Kirksville, Missouri. Kickoff for the Screaming Eagles (9-8-1, 6-8-1 GLVC), the eighth-seed, and 18th-ranked Bulldogs (13-1-3, 12-1-2 GLVC), the top seed, is set for noon.

Following the first round matches at campus sites, the GLVC Tournament will move to Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana for the semifinal matches November 4 and the championship match November 6. The GLVC is featuring the semifinals and the championship match on a neutral field for the first time in the history of GLVC women’s soccer.

Week 10 Eagle Notes: 

Eagles earn a spot in post-season: USI earned a spot in the GLVC Tournament by battling Bellarmine University to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in the final match of the regular season. The Eagles knocked Lewis University out of the eighth and final spot on a tiebreaker after defeating the Flyers earlier this fall.

USI in the GLVC Tournament: The Eagles, who are in the tournament for the first time since 2012, are making their ninth appearance in the GLVC Tournament and are still searching for their first conference title in program history.

Leading scorers: The Eagles have scored 32 goals through 18 matches this fall, flying by the 19 scored during entirety of the 2015 campaign. Sophomore forward Ryley Hancock (Evansville, Indiana) and senior forward Gabriella Korte (St. Louis, Missouri) are tied for the team lead in points with 14 each. Hancock, who has a team-high three game-winning goals, has 14 points on a team-high six goals and two assists, while Korte has four goals and a team-high six assists.

Between the posts: Senior goalkeeper Courtney Lofland (Indianapolis, Indiana) has started the last two matches for the Eagles and enters the post-season with a 5-2-1 mark and a 0.80 goals against average. Lofland is 2-0-1 in her last three starts, posting three shutouts dating back to October 14.

USI vs. Truman State: The Eagles have lost the last three match-ups with the Bulldogs, including a 3-0 decision at Kirksville in September. The last time USI defeated Truman was 2013 when the Eagles defeated then nationally-ranked Bulldogs, 1-0, in the first-ever match-up in GLVC play between the two programs. Truman leads the all-time series, 6-1-1.

 

 

IU Swimming & Diving Ready for Tri-Meet with Kentucky and Tennessee

 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will head to Lexington, Ky. to face Kentucky and Tennessee in a tri-meet on Friday.

The one-day, short-course yards tri-meet will get underway at 11:00 a.m. ET at the Lancaster Aquatic Center. Live results for the meet can be found at IUHoosiers.com.

Scouting the Hoosiers

The Indiana Hoosiers enter Friday’s tri-meet coming off a successful opening weekend. The men’s team swept two-time defending NCAA Champion Texas and Florida, while the women’s team notched a pair of victories over the Gators.

In the first CSCAA/TYR Top 25 Poll released the week, the Indiana men’s team was ranked No. 1 in the nation after their impressive 4-0 start. The IU women were ranked No. 12 in the country.

Scouting Kentucky and Tennessee

The Kentucky Wildcats men’s team enters the meet on Friday ranked No. 18 in the nation, while the women’s team checks in at No. 21. The Tennessee men are ranked No. 13 in the country in the CSCAA/TYR Top 25, while the women’s squad is ranked No. 11.

Last year, UK’s men placed 40th at the NCAA Championships, while the women’s team came in 22nd. The Tennessee men placed seventh last year at the NCAA’s, while the women’s team finished 13th.

King, Pieroni Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

Both Lilly King and Blake Pieroni were named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 26. Pieorni had three wins to help lead the men to a sweep of both Texas and Florida, while King had a pair of victories to help IU notch two wins over Florida.

IU Men Ranked No. 1 in Nation in CSCAA/TYR Top 25

In the first CSCAA/TYR Top 25 poll released on Oct. 26, the Indiana men’s swimming and diving team was ranked No. 1 in the nation after sweeping both Texas and Florida to start the season. The women’s team was ranked No. 12 in the country.

IU Sends 11 to Rio Olympics, Winning Seven Medals

The Indiana Swimming and Diving program sent 13 swimmers, divers and coaches to the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics – James Connor, alumna Amy Cozad, Marwan Elkamash, Kennedy Goss, Michael Hixon, Ali Khalafalla, Lilly King, alum Cody Miller, Jessica Parratto, Blake Pieroni and Anze Tavcar. Drew Johansen served as the head coach of USA diving, while Ray Looze was an assistant coach for USA Swimming.

At the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, the IU swimmers and divers won a total of seven medals – four golds, one silver and two bronze. Lilly King headlined the group with two gold medals, while Cody Miller won gold and bronze. Blake Pieroni earned a gold medal as a member of Team USA’s 4×100 freestyle relay team, junior Kennedy Goss earned a bronze medal as a member of Team Canada’s 4×200 freestyle relay team and junior diver Michael Hixon won silver in the men’s 3m synchronized springboard.

King Wins Two NCAA Titles in 2015

Indiana’s Lilly King dominated the breaststroke at the 2016 NCAA Championships, winning both the 100 and 200 breast with the fastest short-course yard times in history. The freshman broke every record in the event with her historic swim – the American, NCAA, NCAA Meet, U.S. Open, Indiana school, Big Ten and Georgia Tech Pool records – and owns all of the aforementioned records in both the 100 and 200 breast. In total, King recorded an impressive four All-America honors at her first NCAA Championships.

A suspect is in custody for making the threats against Stringtown School on Wednesday. The suspect is a juvenile and was making the calls from a community in northern Indiana. Several agencies, including federal and northern Indiana officers, assisted us in this investigation.
We want to remind everyone that we take the safety of our children and their sense of safety extremely serious. Anyone who makes statements that are deemed threatening will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

 Area educators are calling community members to action.

Local school districts have been dealing with the controversial ISTEP test for years now.

Officials are asking parents, students, and community members to communicate with members of the Indiana assessment committee about finding a replacement test.

“There are huge problems. Not just problems that have been created but problems that have been ongoing now for the past six years that have really created an unstable environment for education in Indiana” Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Superintendent Dr. David Smith said.

A panel was created to find an alternative to ISTEP during the 2016 legislative session. After seven panel meetings Smith says Indiana is no closer to finding a replacement test.

“What we are trying to do here today is just to bring a voice to the students, our families, and our teachers who frankly have been left out of this process. Every time standards and assessments change it strips teachers of the necessary resources to do their job” Smith said.

Indiana gubernatorial candidate and Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb says delays in ISTEP results are inexcusable.

“ISTEP is going by the wayside and it can’t happen soon enough in my mind their needs to be a methodical approach to replacing it but we need a test here in Indiana that would receive results quicker that are fair, accurate, and timely” Holcomb said.

Now officials from close to 25 area school districts are calling community members to action.

“Indiana professional educators implore students parents and community partners to immediately communicate to the members of the Indiana assessment committee to recommend an assessment system that’s appropriate in use for both student progress tracking and accountability” Dr. Tracy Lorey with Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools said.

Officials say they want the committee to take politics and competition out of the process of finding a replacement exam.

Lieutenant Governor Holcomb, Auditor Crouch Are Campaigning In Evansville

 Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb and Auditor Suzanne Crouch are campaigning in Evansville.

The Republican candidate for Indiana Governor and his running mate started Wednesday morning at Youth First on Southeast Third Street. Then the pair also paid a visit to the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Holcomb says speaking with chamber officials gave him a unique perspective from this part of the state. He says, “Not just Evansville, but the southwestern quadrant of the state and I’ve been proud to have been associated with a lot of the reforms that have enable this part of the state to really forge forward and create their own destiny and contribute to the life of our state.”

At 1:30 p.m. Holcomb and his running mate will tour the Evansville Medical School and hotel project site with Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. And then at 4:30 p.m. Crouch will be a guest at the Vanderburgh County Federation of Republican Women Soup Dinner and Candidates Night.

Indiana Department of Insurance Corrects Misleading Media Report Regarding Obamacare Premiums in Indiana

Indianapolis – The Indiana Department of Insurance today issued the following statement in response to amisleading news story about rates on the Indiana Marketplace.

Specifically, the story states: “In Indiana, the benchmark plan will be 3% cheaper.”

“The health insurance rates in the Indiana Marketplace are going to increase. In fact, many Hoosiers will see a double digit increase in rates. The way the reporter characterized the rate change misleads Hoosiers,” said Stephen W. Robertson, Commissioner of Indiana Department of Insurance.

Following are facts:

  • Next year, based upon current enrollment, the average rate will increase by 18.7% over the 2016 rates for the Indiana Marketplace.
  • Overall, the premiums in the Indiana individual market have gone up by almost 70% since the Affordable Care Act was implemented. Members currently enrolled in the state’s largest plan may see up to an average 29% increase.
  • For 2017, four carriers will be selling on the Indiana Marketplace: Anthem, CareSource, Celtic (MHS) and MDwise Marketplace. This is four fewer carriers than in 2016.
  • The following plans have withdrawn from the Indiana Marketplace and will no longer offer health plans on the Marketplace: IU Health Plan, Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana (PHP), All Savers, and Southeastern Indiana Health Organization (SIHO).
  • More than 68,000 Hoosiers lost their health plans when these carriers left the Marketplace.

IU Men’s Swimming & Diving Ranked No. 1, Women 12th in CSCAA Poll

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men’s swimming and diving team is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)/TYR Top 25 Swimming & Diving Poll released on Wednesday. The Hoosier women’s team is ranked No. 12 in the country.

“It is an honor to be recognized as the No. 1 team in the nation,” IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. “I believe the last time we held this ranking was at the end of the 1973 season. We realize as a program the most important ranking is the last one and we will work hard to finish as highly as possible. All our swimmers and divers are excited to have the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis at the IU Natatorium this coming March.”

The Hoosier men got the 2016-17 season off to a tremendous start this past weekend, sweeping a two-day tri-meet with No. 2 Texas and No. 8 Florida in Bloomington. The Longhorns are the two-time defending NCAA Champions, while Florida placed third last year at the NCAA’s.

The IU women also started the year off well, sweeping No. 18 Florida in two meets, but falling to No. 7 Texas. Rankings are compiled by CSCAA-member coaches and released on a bi-weekly basis.  The next polls will be released November 9, 2016.

The Indiana men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool this Friday, Oct. 28 at 11:00 a.m. ET when the Hoosiers face Kentucky and Tennessee in a tri-meet of nationally-ranked squads in Lexington.

Sullivan Examines Research On Education Funding

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 26, 2016) — State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) this week joined leaders from around the country to learn more about research conducted on outcomes-based funding policies for higher education.

Sullivan said these policies are currently used in determining the amount of state funds given to public colleges and universities in Indiana. They measure things like student enrollment compared to degree completion rates.

“Outcomes-based funding is especially meant to help at-risk students who often leave post-secondary education in debt without degrees and good job prospects,” Sullivan said.

The two-day workshop, Financing Student Outcomes and Equity in Postsecondary Education: Lessons from Leading States, was hosted by the Lumina Foundation. The workshop featured data collected by Research for Action (RFA), an education research organization. The group took an in-depth look at Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee’s funding of higher education and delivered the information to stakeholders.

“I attended these meetings to be the first to hear about new research completed by RFA on Indiana’s policies,” Sullivan said. “I believe it’s imperative we continue to put student successes first and use data-driven formulas in how we fund our schools.”

As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Sullivan works to help build Indiana’s biennial budget, which determines how state revenues are distributed to education, infrastructure, salaries, public pensions, public assistance, corrections, Medicaid and transportation.

She said an immense amount of data was shared at the workshop about policies that have been successful, and others that have been not so successful, in Indiana and surrounding states.

“Indiana’s data looks much better than most and I’m encouraged by the work that’s been accomplished thus far,” Sullivan said. “Using the data during this budget session ensures we will continue to measure our state’s successes. The data shows that our higher education is a source is a source of pride for Indiana and continues to head in the right direction.”
