YESTERYEAR: Liederkranz Maennerchor Building

YESTERYEAR: Liederkranz Maennerchor Building

Since it was erected in 1912, the building at 302 Market Street, pictured here in 1950, has housed a variety of organizations. The original occupant was the Liederkranz Maennerchor, a German singing society, which moved there in search of more spacious quarters. Although the structure appeared to be three stories high, it actually contained only two stories because of the huge hall on the second floor that was used for dancing and other entertainment. When the group disbanded during World War I, the Knights of Columbus acquired the property, remaining there for several decades. The aging building eventually fell vacant, but after a recent extensive renovation, it was converted to an assisted living facility.
