UE Softball enters final week of preseason
Aces ready to open the year at Auburn next week
Just seven days remain until the University of Evansville softball team will open the 2017 season at the Plainsman Invite in Auburn, Okla.
Evansville made one of the top ten turnarounds in the NCAA last season, improving their season win tally by 14. This year, a team that features nine seniors is ready to make its move. Head coach Mat Mundell scheduled a competitive non-conference slate that will see the Purple Aces take on three of the top six teams in the preseason rankings.
In the opening week, UE is set to face second-ranked Auburn. The third weekend of the season will see the Aces face the preseason #1 team – Oklahoma. Evansville faces the Sooners on March 3 and has the opportunity to face them again depending on how the bracket works out. In the final non-conference tournament in Lexington, Ky., UE will face preseason #6 Michigan on the second day of the event.
With a week left until it all begins, Coach Mundell is excited about where his team stands.
“Our girls have been working very hard. There is some great competition in practice with everyone fighting for playing time,†Mundell said. “As a coach, it is very exciting to have the depth that we do. We have a few different lineups that we are looking at; it is a good position to be in where you have several options.â€
The opening tournament at Auburn begins next Friday with a 9:45 a.m. game versus Mercer and a 4:45 p.m. contest against SIU Edwardsville. The Aces also face Creighton twice and face the second-ranked Tigers on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
“Next week will see us put the finishing touches on a few things, crossing our T’s and dotting the I’s,†Mundell added. “We will work a lot of simulating some situations and other things like that to be prepared for the weekend.â€

BREAKING NEWS: Rally In Evansville One Of Over 200 Nationwide Calling For The Defunding Of Abortion Planned Parenthood
Rally in Evansville calling for the Defunding Of Abortion Planned Parenthood
On February 11, a rally will be held on the public sidewalk at the Planned Parenthood facility at 125 Weinbach Avenue in Evansville, starting at 9 a.m. This event is one of over 200 being coordinated nationwide by the #ProtestPP Coalition, calling for Planned Parenthood to be stripped of all federal funding, and for all such funding to be redirected to Federally Qualified Health Centers that do not perform abortions. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain, receives over $420 million from the federal government every year.
Congressional leaders are working to cut funding for the controversial organization as part of the budget reconciliation process, while preserving the assistance this funding is meant to provide for poor women. Rallies will be held nationwide on February 11 in over 200 cities from coast to coast, supporting the defunding effort and educating the public about Planned Parenthood’s central role in the abortion industry and their long record of unethical activity.
“Planned Parenthood claims that American women rely on them for healthcare, but in fact four out of five women will never set foot in a Planned Parenthood facility,†said Mary Ellen Van Dyke, Executive Director of Right to Life of Southwest Indiana. “Planned Parenthood provides less than 1% of annual pap tests and zero mammograms, but performs 34% of annual abortions in the U.S. They’ve been caught shielding child predators, defrauding Medicaid, and harvesting fetal tissue for profit. This controversial organization does not deserve our tax dollars.â€
Van Dyke emphasizes that no funding would be taken away from programs that help poor women and families. Every dollar taken from Planned Parenthood would be redirected to Federally Qualified Health Centers that provide a wider range of services and higher standard of care than Planned Parenthood, without doing abortions. “The effort to defund Planned Parenthood has nothing to with taking healthcare away from women. It’s about taking tax dollars away from the nation’s largest abortion chain,†she explained.
#ProtestPP is a coalition of state and national pro-life groups, headed by three national pro-life activist organizations: Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, Created Equal, and the Pro-Life Action League. For the February 11 rally, 40 Days for Life is also serving as a major partner.
