Men’s basketball ready for midweek tilt against Bradley

Aces and Braves to face off on Wednesday evening

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Next up for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team will be a home contest against Bradley on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. inside the Ford Center.

West Side Night proved to be a lucky one once again for the Purple Aces as they earned a 70-58 win over UNI on Sunday.  Jaylon Brown and Christian Benzon scored 17 points apiece while Ryan Taylor finished with 13 and Jaiveon Eaves had 13.  Limited to just seven players, the Aces played one of their top games of the season, holding UNI to just 20 points in the first half.  As a team, the Aces shot 48.1% from the field and were 6-of-11 from outside; the defense held UNI to 38.6% shooting, including 5/23 (21.7%) from long range.

Giving up just 62.3 points per game, the Aces have the top defense in the Missouri Valley Conference.  The last time UE allowed such a low point total came in 1981-82 when the opposition scored just 60.1 points per game; that mark is the lowest on record since 1959-60.  For the season, the Aces are allowing the opposition to shoot just 39.1% overall (3rd in the Valley) and 29.8% from outside, tops in the MVC.  Evansville has not held an opponent to under 40% shooting in a season since 1994-95 when the defense allowed 39.5% of opposing shots to fall.

It was another stellar effort for Christian Benzon, who notched 17 points in the win over UNI, knocking down 6 out of 10 shots.  He continues to be the top rebounder for the Aces, checking in with 4.9 per game; over the last five games, Benzon has notched 6.4 caroms per contest.  Prior to his senior year, Benzon took just three 3-pointers, missing each one; this year, he has 3 out of 5 from outside.  He reset his career mark with 18 points at Austin Peay as he continued an impressive season hitting an efficient 8-of-10 shots on his way to double figures.

Jaylon Brown made it 2-for-2 as he has notched 17 points in the first two conference games of the season.  Brown began league play by hitting 11 out of 13/ free throws at Illinois State before hitting 7 shots and three more from the charity stripe to hit 17.

Sunday’s game against UNI saw the Aces limited to just seven players on the floor.  Freshman Jaiveon Eaves took full advantage of the opportunity, setting career marks with 13 points and 23 minutes.  In the victory over Boise State, Eaves played just four minutes, but made it count as his triple in the first half got the Aces within two in the victory.  He added five points while hitting a triple in the MVC opener at Illinois State and has notched 13 boards in the last two games.

In non-conference play, Solomon Hainna battled through injury while seeing his game evolve.  That hard work has paid off in two conference games; Hainna averaged 10.3 minutes and 2.2 rebounds per game in his 10 non-conference appearances, but with his health on the upswing, has upped that to 28 minutes and 8.5 rebounds in the opening two league game.  After finishing with 9 rebounds in 28 minutes at Illinois State, he made the first start of his career against UNI and finished the day with 8 boards in another 28 minutes of work.

Bradley enters Wednesday’s game with a 6-9 record and are 1-1 through the first week of league action.  The Braves opened up their MVC schedule with a 60-51 home win over Southern Illinois before falling at Wichita State on Sunday.  Darrell Brown is the top scorer for BU and stands with 11.8 points per game and is accurate from outside, hitting 45.6% of his 3-point attempts.  Koch Bar paces the Braves defense with 6.1 rebounds per game and a total of 24 blocks on the season.

 

Taylor earns third GLVC Player of the Week honor

For the third time in 2016-17, University of Southern Indiana senior guard Jeril Taylor (Louisville, Kentucky) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week. Taylor earned the honor for the second-straight week by posting a triple-double (15 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) in the win over Bluefield State College Monday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

The three GLVC Player of the Week honors are the most by a Screaming Eagle in a single season since former USI All-American and GLVC Player of the Year Chris Thompson won the award four times in 2005-06 and the first USI player to earn the award in back-to-back weeks since former USI All-American and GLVC Player of the Year Jamar Smith in 2008-09.

Taylor’s triple-double to win the conference accolade was just the fourth in history of the program. The last Eagle to produce a triple-double was Wayne Houston in 1997-98 when he had 28 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 blocks in 44 minutes of USI’s 134-125 triple-overtime victory over Northern State University in the 1997 Disney Tip-Off Classic.

The first two triple-doubles by a USI player came during the 1980-81 season when John Holliden had 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 blocks in a win over Central State University and 14 points, 13 rebounds, and a USI record 17 blocks in a win over Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Taylor and the Eagles resume the 2016-17 slate and GLVC action Thursday night at the Physical Activities Center when they host William Jewell College for a 7:30 p.m. contest. USI concludes its short three-game homestand Saturday when Rockhurst University visits for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off.

Express Enrollment Center Extends Hours on Saturday at Ivy Tech Community College

Extended hours are planned at Ivy Tech Community College Southwest’s Express Enrollment Center on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Center is located at the main campus at 3501 N. First Avenue, Evansville.

This day provides an opportunity for students interested in attending or continuing their studies at Ivy Tech during the Spring Semester, to come in to potentially complete all the steps necessary to be registered for the start of classes Jan. 17.

 

Prospective and continuing students can:

New students to the college should bring their SAT/ACT/PSAT scores, high school transcript, or college transcript with them; or plan to take the ACCUPLACER if needed.

Indiana State Police K-9, Andy, Dies Overnight after 8 Years of Dedicated Service

Indiana State Police at Evansville lost one of their K-9’s last night. Master Trooper Kevin Waters reported his K-9 partner, Andy, died last night after becoming ill. Andy was rushed to his veterinary where he died during emergency surgery. Andy was nine-years and 11 months old.

Master Trooper Waters and Andy started working together in June 2008 and they worked side by side until his death. Andy even went through training just yesterday scoring a perfect 100% on searching for narcotics. Andy is credited with hundreds of narcotic seizures and multiple criminal apprehensions. During his eight years of dedicated service Andy was always keeping a watchful eye over his partner and other law enforcement officers during intense situations.  “Andy was a great partner and I will never stop missing him,” said Trooper Waters.

Diamond Avenue Crash Kills One, Seriously Injures Another

On Tuesday, January 03, 2017 at approximately 1:41pm the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Diamond Avenue and St. Joseph Avenue upon report of a crash involving two motor vehicles

On scene investigation and witness statements indicated that a black GMC pick-up truck had been traveling west on Diamond Avenue before crossing into the eastbound lane of travel. The pick-up truck then collided with a black Chevrolet SUV that was traveling east on Diamond Avenue.

The driver of the SUV died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the pick-up truck was severely injured and transported to an emergency room for immediate medical care after Evansville Fire Department firefighters extricated him from his vehicle. The name of the deceased will be released by the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office.

Pursuant to state law regarding crashes involving serious bodily injury or death, the driver of the pick-up consented to a post-accident blood draw. The Coroner’s Office will perform toxicology testing on the deceased. The investigation will remain open pending a full crash reconstruction and toxicology results.

IS IT TRUE we hearing around 15 to 17 members of the EPD are seriously thinking about taking early retirement because of the obvious mistreatment toward them by the city is shameful? ,,,if this inforntion is correct we feel that this is shameful?

IS IT TRUE that the Ford Motor Company announced yesterday that the $16 Billion plant that was planned over the last couple of years for construction in Mexico has been cancelled?…instead Ford will spend $700 Million to expand a plant in Michigan and will hire 700 American workers to meet their needs?…Ford will reportedly be hiring United Auto Workers to fill these jobs prompting UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles to state that “It’s evident today that Ford is rewarding us for our hard work.”?…there is no evidence to suggest that President Elect Donald Trump was involved in Ford’s decision to scuttle the Mexico plant and invest in the United States of America, but one would be naive to conclude that the looming tariffs spoken of by Mr Trump and the general disapproval of offshoring of American jobs did not have some influence in this decision?…this makes the second time that the fear of Mr. Trump’s reaction to an offshoring action has resulted in keeping a block of good paying jobs right here at home?

IS IT TRUE that a 15 year old boy was found dead on the campus of Evansville’s Central High School yesterday?…this young man was a former student who had voluntarily withdrawn from Central High only a short time ago?…the details surrounding this unfortunate situation are scarce at this time but the CCO understands that the other students at Central will be in need of mentoring, counseling, and goodwill for a long time to come to deal with the loss of their classmate?…it makes one wonder just how the heck a 15 year old can just quit school when most laws do not allow such a decision to be acted upon until after one has passed their 16th birthday?…our thoughts and prayers go out to the memory of this young man, his family, and the entire Central High School family?

IS IT TRUE the anticipation for the opening of the downtown Doubletree Hotel is peaking?…from the outside it looks nearly complete?…it has been a full 100 months (over 3,000 days) since the former Mayor of Evansville proclaimed that a Marriott would be built with NO PUBLIC INCENTIVE if and only if a new state of the art arena were built in downtown Evansville?…that was one delusional expectation but lots of people got on board in believing in the delusion?…it is truly going to be a day to celebrate when the first tourists check into the new Doubletree Hotel that cost way more than anticipated and took more TAXPAYER INCENTIVES that anyone every dreamed back in 2008 when the dreams were being hatched?

IS IT TRUE that the staff of the City County Observer is puzzled about how much of a difference there is in the quality of the roads in rural Illinois when contrasted with Kentucky but especially with the roads in Vanderburgh County and the City of Evansville?…there are potholes that need to be filled and we encourage our city and county officials to get behind making that happen this spring when the weather is more cooperative?
