Two Hoosiers were added to the U.S. Olympic Team, USA Swimming announced Sunday night during its final session.
- IU associate head swimming coach Cory Chitwood was named an assistant coach for the open water national team, his first appointment to an Olympic Team.
- Blake Pieroni was the final addition to the 26-man roster as the sixth-place finisher in the 200-meter freestyle. He will represent Team USA on the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
- Additionally, incoming transfer Matt King was named to the Olympic team as the sixth-place finisher in the 100-meter freestyle. King will begin training at IU in the fall following his Olympic debut.
Smith delivers complete game shutout to win series
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters blanked the Windy City ThunderBolts Sunday at Bosse Field, winning 9-0 for their first shutout of the year.
Right-hander Zach Smith (3-4) strung together a dazzling performance, going the distance and tossing the first nine-inning complete-game shutout of any Otter this season.
While backed with exemplary pitching, the Otters (16-23) tagged the ThunderBolts (16-24) early and never looked back.
In the first inning, Randy Bednar scored two with a double to right-center for the game’s first runs. He later came in to score on a Logan Brown fielder’s choice RBI.
Another trio of runs were put on the board in the third. Evansville strung together a two-out rally, ignited by Brown with a two-strike single to left field. The next batter was hit by a pitch. Four walks in a row followed, in addition to a wild pitch to score all runs.
Later in the fifth frame, Giovanni DiGiacomo doubled with one out. He came in to score on an error by the ThunderBolts shortstop, making it 7-0.
Mason White drove in the final runs in the seventh inning. Justin Felix and Delvin Zinn led off with a single and a walk, then scored on a ball hit to right-center field.
Despite the Otters even in hits at six with Windy City, 13 walks helped propel the Evansville bats. Pavin Parks drew four walks, with DiGiacomo garnering three.
Back to .500 on the home stand, the Otters will conclude the nine-game stint against the Joliet Slammers with a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

IS IT TRUE that we have been told by reliable sources that a well-organized group has been quietly looking at establishing a refugee agency for our community?
IS IT TRUE that Evansville is in serious financial trouble because over the years several of our elected officials have spent too much money on fun and games projects?
IS IT TRUE that we have been told that it would make reasonable budget sense if the new Evansville City Controller would do a causal review concerning the Evansville Fire Department and Water and Sewer Department equipment inventory procedures?
IS IT TRUE that an elected official in Evansville City Government uses their campaign email address for city business? …that past news reports are full of articles of politicians such as Hilary Clinton who have conducted government affairs via unsecured private email servers?… that a politician using a private email account could be construed as an attempt to protect official communications from the scrutiny of Freedom of Information Act requests from the media or members of the public?
IS IT TRUE that many members of the Vanderburgh County GOP are ready to hold hands and sing Kumbaya?…that Republican Steve Hammer, Johnny Kincaid, Marsha Abell-Barnhart, and others have offered to assist with bringing the party back together? …that we support efforts to resolve the riffs that currently exist in the Vanderburgh County GOP?
IS IT TRUE that Mayor Terry and the President of the Vanderburgh County Commission Justin Elpers both serve on the E-REP Executive Board of Directors and recently donated $300,000 each of our hard-earned tax dollars to E-REP? …that they also give E-REP this money without receiving any financial reports of what E-REP spent last year’s $300,000 donations on?
IS IT TRUE that we have been told that the Evansville City Council recently approved some interesting raises for several select city employees with little fanfare? …that you can see the article about the raises in today’s CCO?

IS IT TRUE that Kalah Hirsch and Kemberie Weightman of the Evansville Police Department are doing a credible job in providing us with the daily EPD Activity Report on time?
IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny and when the government fears the people we have Liberty?

Board of School Trustees of the EVSC Meeting
The Board of School Trustees of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation will meet for the regularly scheduled Board meeting Monday, June 24, 2024 at 5:30 PM in the Board Room of the EVSC Administration Building located at 951 Walnut Street, Evansville, IN. Board meetings can also be observed by tuning to EVSC’s radio station, 90.7 WPSR or live streamed online at https://www.wpsrhd.com/.
Prior to the regularly scheduled Board meeting, three members of the Board, along with district administrators, will hold a Town Hall beginning at 5:00 PM. This Town Hall is for Vanderburgh County residents to speak directly with Board members in attendance about issues involving EVSC schools. The Town Hall will be held in the Technology and Innovation Center located at 951 Walnut Street, Evansville, IN. Members of the public who would like to attend the Town Hall should register by completing the Town Hall Registration Form located on our website at district.evscschools.com.
