UE Announces Extension For Director Of Athletics Mark Spencer

0

Spencer joined UE in 2014

University of Evansville President Dr. Thomas A. Kazee has announced a contract extension for Purple Aces Director of Athletics Mark Spencer.

“The University of Evansville is excited that Mark Spencer will continue in his leadership role,” Kazee said.  “Since coming to Evansville in 2014, Mark has established a strong foundation, and we look forward to what the future holds.”

Spencer began his tenure as the fifth Division I Athletics Director at UE in September of 2014 after working for eight years at Oregon State University where he served as the Associate and Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business Operations.

“I would like to thank Dr. Kazee and the University of Evansville for their commitment to our department and the direction that we are leading it,” Spencer said.  “We are only beginning to scratch the surface of what Purple Aces athletics can become.  I am very excited about the future and look forward to working with Dr. Kazee, the University and the athletics department for years to come.”

In just over two years of work in Evansville, Spencer has directed the department to great success on and off the playing field.  One of his first priorities was to focus on a unified branding campaign within the athletic department.  The new branding became a reality when Spencer inked a deal with NIKE to be the exclusive apparel provider for each of the Aces sports programs.  This was the first such deal in program history.

He has also directed several impactful projects within the department.  Most recently, his efforts have resulted in a renovation of the Armory building on campus.  This project featured new netting, turf and signage for a facility that impacts over half of the Aces’ 14 sports programs.  Other projects he has directly worked with include: a new scoreboard for soccer and softball, windscreens at soccer, baseball and softball, an updated sound system and press box renovation at soccer and an updated ticketing plan for men’s basketball.

Other projects are on tap, including renovating Meeks Family Court in the Carson Center in preparation for hosting women’s basketball beginning next season.

On the playing field, Spencer’s first season featured the men’s basketball team winning the 2015 CIT Championship before winning 25 games last season.  The women’s soccer team defended its home field to win the 2015 MVC Tournament and advance to play Florida State in the NCAA Tournament.

His first coaching hire at UE – head men’s soccer coach Marshall Ray – led the Aces to the second-largest single-season turnaround in school history, pacing the squad to a 10-8-3 mark in 2016.  On the women’s basketball side, he recently announced the hiring of Matt Ruffing as the permanent head coach.  Ruffing has already doubled the UE win total from last season.

Another hire under his tenure – women’s tennis coach Jayson Wiseman – has already made a huge impact.  His 2016 recruiting class was in the top 35 in the nation.  Spencer extended the contracts for head baseball coach Wes Carroll and head softball coach Mat Mundell since his arrival.  Carroll led the Aces to 29 wins last year while Mundell and his staff were named the 2016 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year after engineering a 14-game turnaround.

As part of the Carson Center renovation, the UE volleyball team will play on a new floor beginning next season and will benefit from the major additions to their facility.  The swimming and diving and golf teams have each enjoyed unparalleled success during Spencer’s tenure while the future of the cross country program has never been brighter.  In 2016, Spencer and head coach Don Walters announced the addition of men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

“When I started here, it was my goal to make this a better place for all of our student-athletes,” Spencer continued.  “I feel we have moved towards that goal and am very excited about the direction of the department.”

PELATH ON STATE OF STATE: IS GOVERNOR ON BOARD FOR TAX INCREASES? HARD TO SAY

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath from Michigan City today issued the following statement after Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb gave his first State of the State address:

“While Republicans in the Legislature are calling for new taxes on Hoosier motorists, it seems our governor is not yet ready to embrace their plan.

“The success of any program as massive as this depends on the governor’s ability to sell it to Hoosiers. From what we have seen tonight, it does not appear he is ready to accept that role.

“This is the dilemma facing his party. Too many House and Senate Republicans have preached for years that taxes cannot be raised for any reason. Candidly, they have effectively convinced many voters of this as well.

“Republicans may be disagreeing with each other before they get around to disagreeing with Democrats.

“Truth be told, this is a time for questions. Indiana House Democrats remain wary of calls for sacrifices that are not shared, particularly at a time when these same leaders keep state budget surpluses at impossibly high levels AND cut taxes for corporations, special interests, and the very wealthy.

“There is a lot of pleading that must be done to make legislators on both sides of the aisle believe that we should be raising taxes. After tonight’s speech, it remains to be seen what role the governor will play in the debate.

“As for the governor’s other proposals, there is much to support in the call for improving the skills of our workforce, but we are simply too timid in our approach to pre-K. The need is obvious enough that we do not have to fiddle with gradual expansions of pilot projects that ignore most of the state.

“And when it comes to K-12, there simply isn’t enough of a recognition that we have been slowly starving our public schools of the funds they need to meet their constitutionally-required mandate to educate all children. At some point in time, we have to stop continually throwing money at a laboratory for vouchers and charters, and remind ourselves that we need to look out for all schoolchildren.

“Indiana House Democrats will be there to offer advice as Republicans work through their internal debates, particularly when it comes to tax hikes. There are alternatives that don’t ask more from the unconnected.”

YESTERYEAR: Shetler Moving & Storage Company

0

Established in 1899, B. J. Shetler began his young company with two teams of horses and wagons, which traveled as far as Princeton and Vincennes. The first truck was not acquired until 1916, which dates this image to probably the first decade of the twentieth century. A native of Illinois, Shetler arrived in Evansville by steamboat as a young man, working for a furniture manufacturer before opening his own business at First Avenue and Louisiana Street. When Shetler retired in 1945, he was replaced by his son, who affiliated Shetler Moving and Storage with Atlas Van Lines after he convinced the company to relocate to Evansville in the late 1950s.

Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on Private Manning

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement regarding the commutation of Private Manning’s sentence:

“While brave soldiers were fighting overseas to protect our country, Private Manning was undermining their work and putting their lives at risk by exposing our most sensitive information,”said Bucshon. “President Obama’s commutation of Private Manning’s sentence is outrageous and a slap in the face to our military and intelligence communities. It also emboldens similar dangerous actions by bad actors in the future.”

Indiana’s Hixon Named Big Ten Diver of the Week

0

CHICAGO – Indiana University’s Michael Hixon was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week on Wednesday, the league office announced.

The honor is the second this season for Hixon and the sixth of his career. The Amherst, Mass. product was also named the league’s diver of the week on Nov. 9, 2016.

Against No. 13 Michigan this past Friday, Hixon won both the 1-meter (430.43) and 3-meter dives (443.33) with NCAA qualifying times. The two wins against the Wolverines give Hixon six individual victories on the season.

This past summer, Hixon won a silver medal for Team USA in the 3-meter synchro at the Rio Olympic Games. The redshirt junior also placed 10th overall in the 3-meter at the Olympics.

The Indiana University swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when the Hoosiers head north to face Purdue in a Big Ten dual meet at 11:00 a.m. ET in West Lafayette, Ind.

COA rejects woman’s claim that accident occurred outside chemical test period

IL for www.theindianalawyer.com

A woman who drove drunk into a mobile home causing significant damage lost her appeal Wednesday after arguing the state’s blood draw occurred outside the three-hour window under statute and thus did not prove her blood alcohol level at the time of the accident.

Elberta N. Jackson was convicted of Class A misdemeanors operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least 0.15 and resisting law enforcement, as well as Class B misdemeanor disorderly conduct following a Jan. 19, 2016, car crash. Marion police officers were dispatched to a trailer court at 1:10 a.m. on the report of a car striking a residence. They found Jackson’s car crashed into an occupied residence, although no one inside was hurt. Jackson was screaming and swearing and acting belligerently toward the officers. One officer smelled alcohol on her breath and tried to get her to submit to a breath test. Jackson refused and after a struggle, the officer able to place her in handcuffs.

Jackson’s blood was drawn at 3:14 a.m. after officers obtained a warrant.

In her appeal, Jackson insisted that the state failed to prove her alcohol concentration equivalent was at least 0.15 at the time she operated her vehicle because the state offered no evidence that the blood draw was completed within the requisite three hours under statute. She maintained that the crash occurred about an hour before police arrived.

“It is undisputed that Jackson had been operating the vehicle at the time of the accident, and the police officers were dispatched at 1:10 a.m. It defies all notions of reasonableness to hypothesize — given the presence of the homeowners, the severity of the damage done to their trailer and Jackson’s vehicle, and the potentially serious injuries of Jackson’s passenger — that nearly an hour would have passed between the time of the accident and the summoning of the police (as the accident must have occurred no later than 12:14 a.m. in order for the statutory presumption to apply),” Judge Patricia Riley wrote.

Jackson also challenged the two-year suspension of her driver’s license, claiming her due process rights were violated because she didn’t receive notice from the state that her license could be revoked.

But under statute, a person who refuses to submit to a chemical test is informed by the officer that refusal will result in the suspension of the person’s driving privileges, Riley pointed out. Once the court determines probable cause the person violated the OWI statute, the clerk of the court forwards a copy of the probable cause affidavit to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Based on a prior conviction, the BMV was obligated to suspend Jackson’s driver’s license for two years, and Jackson did not ask for judicial review of the suspension.

The case is Elberta N. Jackson v. State of Indiana, 27A02-1607-CR-1717.
